Car Insurance

edited October 2016 in Money Matters

Our auto policy renews in December so I think I may start looking for quotes again...I called our current company (Amica) to see what we can do to lower our premiums. We could end up paying $1287 per year for 2 cars (1 purchase/1 lease) if we do the following and this is including the 20% dividend check back at the end of the year.

-Change our deductible to $1,000 (this would save us $179 per year!) There has only been 1 accident between the both of us in the 10 years that we've been together. We have an e-fund so I don't see why we can't make it $1K. I hate to loose that $179 our of our pockets for basically nothing.

-We would save $50 per year if we have our montly amount set up to auto pay to a credit card or checking accountt which is fine with us

- And instead of getting the deductible back at the end of the year as a check, we could apply the check to our next year premium so the monthly payments are lower.

Does $1287 sounds like a lot for 2 car insurance policies? I may still call another place or two but we also get a discount for having a home policy with them too

Thanks!

Re: Car Insurance

  • We spend $1300/year for 2 newer vehicles (2015 & 2016- both have loans on them). Our deductible is $1000 and we had to up some of our other amounts to get the umbrella policy a few weeks ago. We have home owners with them as well. The biggest discount we could get is if we take a defensive driving course- 10% off for 3 years. DH and I haven't done it recently because the girls were small, but now that they're bigger, it's easier to spend a Saturday doing that (class is usually 9am-3pm and is $20/person). The next time one comes up, we'll sign up for it.

  • I'm probably terrible for this, but you couldn't pay me to leave my current insurer (USAA). I don't normally price check to see if they have the lowest rate, but we get discounts for combining our home, auto, and valuable property insurance with them and our rates go down every six months, not up, and for what we pay for insuring three cars, it seems pretty reasonable. I've always had excellent service from them and wouldn't ever consider leaving. So to me, customer service and my relationship with the insurer tend to trump the price. But I also understand that USAA is a little bit more of a unique situation among insurance agencies.
  • Depending on where you live it doesn't sound too high, but you might want to at least check around.  We pay about 1,200 a year for two vehicles (one a 2011 and one a 2013) with a $500 deductible.  We get a discount for bundling with our home insurance and for paying in full.

  • To me $1287 doesn't sound like a lot for 2 newer cars.  I don't know exactly what we pay because it's one lump sum and also includes our camper, but I know it's more than that, and we just did a price check last year and switched companies.  We were with Progressive for a long time but they kept raising the rates for no reason, so now we're with Liberty Mutual.  I do have one speeding ticket on there though, but that will drop off in a year, and H has a truck that is expensive to insure because it's on the "most stolen" list (never mind he barely drives it and it is parked inside our garage).

Instead of paying monthly, will they give you an even bigger discount if you pay a lump sum every 6 months or yearly?

Ok, thanks guys...it doesn't sound too far off and we are in HCOL. I will probably check another company or two just to compare. I also asked my parents what they pay and they will get back to me
  • Oye I just looked at our premium... my 2016 Explorer (which is cheaper to insure than my 2013 Edge was), his 2015 F350, our camper, and a utility trailer clocks in at $2,512 a year.  So yeah, your $1,287 sounds great LOL!

Insurance rates are a bit brutal here in CO because of all the hail storms.

I'd check with others in your state. Next door in RI we have a much lower COL, but our car insurance rates are a lot higher. When I lived in MA, however, I could get my rate quite a bit lower than than I can now despite the higher COL. It must have something to do with the laws in each state, or perhaps the fact that RI drivers are the worst. Overall, $1200 really doesn't sound too bad. It's a lot less than I'm paying right now!
  • I can't really comment if those are good rates or not, because the biggest indicator of cost is something you can't do much about...the zip code you live in.  It's always a good idea to shop around, unless you are particularly tied to your current company.  There can be large differences in insurance costs.

Like for me, I just need to stop looking at posts about insurance, lol.  It's depressing.  I'm over 40, have a perfect driving record, and pay more than you all for ONE car for a SIX-month policy.  Because NOLA sucks and has a freakishly high % of uninsured motorists, so our rates are outrageous.

I usually pay each 6-month policy in full, because that does save me almost 10%.  I'm with Progressive and have been for many years.  I admit I don't look that much for other rates.  I have been extremely pleased with them and it would take a substantial discount to get me to switch.  But they tend to be one of the lower cost players in my market anyway.

Even within a state, it's not super accurate.  I feel like the only way to really know is to call multiple companies unfortuntely.  My car insurance went up $400 a year for my one car when I moved from one town, to another and the addresses were 10min apart.  We moved 20min away to a different town a few years later and our insurance for two cars went down $400.  That was to a town with a big shopping mall, highway access all over the place, and lots of commerical businesses.  We moved into our house (which is actually in the first town I started in with my insurance) and our insurance went back up $400/year for the two cars.  And this is a town with no highway that runs through it, no major roads, no businesses, basically no crime, and we park in a garage.  I have literally been in a 20min radius and thats how much ours has changed.

Definitely!  10 years ago, I moved less than one mile away from where I'd previously been.  Same city, different zip code.  My car insurance was cut in half. HALF.  I mean, it was a good thing, but completely nuts.  And obviously I would have been 100 degrees past boiling if it had been the other way around.

It is soooo depressing and it's giving me anxiety just having to look into this stuff all the time! It's expensive and I just hate that we have to pay for some types of insurance "just in case", it's a crappy gamble

I used to be with Progressive and they had good rates for me at the time and good service when I got into an accident.  It might be worth me getting a quote from them again.

They pay high, retail blue book if your car gets totaled and have always been easy to work with.  My car was totaled about 3 years ago (other driver's fault).  I had bought it used 4.5 years before the accident.  Progressive actually paid me about $400 more than what I had paid for it originally.

They have also given me the added free perk of accident forgiveness because I have been with them for over 10 years.

  • I'd recommend looking up and independent agent in your area and having a couple of them run some quotes for you.  Have them run both your home and auto insurance since it's cheaper and they may have a better option if they're combined.   If you need help narrowing it down, look has a "Trusted Choice" association. Independent agents have more options to quote you with than a captive agent like State Farm or Country Companies.

We're with Safeco Insurance and we pay $1800/year for 5 vehicles.  4 of them with full coverage (250/500 deductibles and 250,000/500,000 liability), 1 with liability plus comprehensive.

I'd actually look into Progressive as well, but have found it's actually cheaper to go through an agent (most times) than buy it yourself online.  So that's worth looking into.  Our agency actually writes with them and they a the best at handling claims even though they're geared toward more high risk drivers.

  • How often do you guys call around for quotes?
We got quotes just over 2 years ago, when we combined policies after we got married.  I was using an agent at the time and convinced that my rate would blow the rate that H would find out of the water.  Nope, the rate the agent gave was hundreds of dollars more than what he found for amica.  When we bought our house this year and switched from cheap rental insurance to homeowners insurance I thought about getting quotes but it seemed overwhelming to have another task at that time. So I stuck with amica.  I will shop around this spring, and probably again in 3-5 years. To me, it's not worth shopping around yearly.

We have had a really good epxeirence with Amica.  When my husband was involved in a hit and run (obviously he was the hit not the run..) they paid us out for the work without a deductible before they even tracked down the other insraunce.  I think it was about 3 weeks later they told us they got paid by the other insurance (he had got her license plate down)

Ugh, no clue. My RI license plate is a badge of shame. A couple of years ago (could still be true, but not sure) we had the highest rate of fatal accidents per capita of any state. MA drivers are aggressive, but predictable. RI drivers make absolutely no sense.

As a heads up for next time you call around, Liberty Mutual offers some sort of special deal for Subaru owners. It will probably still be high with where you live but we got our best rate with them by far.

Never heard/seen the Rhode Island slide, but my husband and I refer to the "New Hampshire right turn" where people come to a complete stop for several seconds before taking a right hand turn. It drives me nuts and is not the MA way

RI slide is basically sticking your nose into traffic really far to make a left hand turn. Usually without a blinker on. And people tolerate it and make you feel like the jerk if you go around them anyway. Obnoxious!

Ha!  I guess we aren't the only area with a special left turn.  The "Pittsburgh left" is when a red light turns green and the first car turning left in opposing traffic goes first.  Sometimes they are given the right of way by a car that waits and waves them on, other times they creep at the end of the red light and then dart when it turns green.
  • @xstatic3333 I always referred to the RI slide as the move when someone is going 80 in the far left lane and then whizzes across 3 lanes of traffic to take an exit on the highway without warning. I've tried Liberty Mutual because I also get a BU alum discount and no matter which way they run it Arbella always wins out.

@csuave  We do the "Pittsburgh Left" in Massachusetts too! I was visiting a friend in Texas once and they do NOT do that move which I found out by getting honked at a lot lol. Oops.

A few months ago someone pulled the "Pittsburgh left" here in our nice midwest state and I was appalled lol. It's fun to put a name to it now!

2nd bolded:  Get out!  That is just crazy!  I've lived in CA, NOLA, and briefly in Miami.  That maneuver in any of those places would cause an accident 90% of the time.

Having grown up in CA, I think its fun that everyone seems to call the "slowing way down for a stop sign, but not actually stopping", the California Roll.

1st bolded:  Of the three places I've lived, Miami was hands down the worst for drivers.  Super bad, super rude.

NOLA vs. CA is just like your comparison of RI vs. MA.  CA drivers are aggressive and have their rude moments, but they're good drivers overall and aren't going to almost kill you with their aggressiveness.  And they MOVE their a**.  They barely slow it down to make a right turn (awesome), much less need to come to a complete stop for one.  NOLA does the stopped/super slow turns also.  They make turns, change lanes, and pull away from curbs, often without looking.  In those instances, they're not even being rude, they're just being super dumb and totally unobservant.  Turn signals usually aren't used.  And, if they are, they are being used incorrectly half the time.

Not predictable at all either.  They'll drive WAY under the speed limit.  But then run a light as its turning red.  That's when I wish for telepathic abilities to say, "You know, if you'd just been driving the 35 MPH speed limit instead of 20 MPH...for NO REASON...you would have easily made that light and not have had to run it.  Just saying."

It's hilarious but, when I go home to CA and drive there, it's relaxing and pleasurable.  Nobody would call driving in CA gridlock relaxing and pleasurable.  But it is to me because I am finally with "my people", who drive like I do, lol.  I'm thinking, "Wow, that was a nice job cutting me off.  I didn't have to slam on my brakes and swerve to avoid hitting you.  You know how to change a lane, girl!"  For you Bostonians out there, I was feeling a similar driving bond on my recent trip.

  • That sounds like a great rate however I'm in a no-fault state and our rates are based on numerous things.

  • Gotcha @LillibetteV! That definitely happens all the time here too. Sigh. I apologize for my new state.

I'm another one who thought the "Pittsburgh Left" was just normal procedure. Good thing I don't drive in other parts of the country too much!
  • I think ours is about $1100 for 2 cars.  I'll be checking rates soon because I feel our homeowners is getting too high
  • I need to bring this post back as I plan on calling our insurance company Friday to make some changes....do you guys know if I can negotiate to keep my $500 deductible? they told me if I wanted to change it to $1,000 we would save about $175 /year but I would like to try to score those savings to keep the $500 deductible and I'm not sure I can even ask that....
  • I have tried to negotiate car insurance and found it to be a big failure. I'm not sure they're allowed to deviate from the rates the computers spit out, though the insurance industry ladies around here can probably tell you definitively.
  • I've never tried negotiating car insurance, however just recently I asked our agent to look into why our new car cost less to insure than our 5-year-old car. Regardless of the answer, our agent dug further and found that we could save $500+ a year by switching us to the company's new rating system. Moral of the story, if you have a question ask it, and also ask about any other deals or rating systems that may be available.
