UPDATE! : Job Interview w/ Dave Ramsey's team!

5000 Comments Fifth Anniversary 500 Love Its First Answer
edited November 2016 in Money Matters
So yeah, I applied for a position with Dave Ramsey's team on Friday for a sales position that I'm highly qualified for.  Received an e-mail this morning that I'm a perfect candidate with my sales and passion for Dave's principals.  So we're setting up a phone interview.

Holy moly! I seriously shot over my app and resume Friday knowing it was a position I wanted and would love, but really didn't expect to hear anything.
Now I'm beyond nervous.  I know their interviews are intense and not the ordinary questions. So I'm not really sure how to prepare myself for it.

It's funny because part of the application process they ask some different questions.  I answered them 100% me and not in the most professional manner, but knew if I received an interview I didn't want to come across as something I'm not.

Receiving this position would mean uprooting and moving to Nashville.  And I'm 10 weeks pregnant with our 2nd, so timing may not be right but I had to apply when I saw it come up.  We've talked about one of us taking a position there and moving if it came up, but I didn't think I would actually be qualified enough to receive an interview.

So good vibes or something, I'm not sure.  Just had to share it somewhere.

Interview #1 in the books.
I was instantly moved on to interview #2.  Wow!  The interviewer said he knew 5 minutes in that he was moving me forward.  So yeah, holy crap this is a possibility.
Their interview process is definitely thorough and they want to talk about values and beliefs as well as the position itself. But it went so well.  It didn't feel like a real interview, just like a conversation with a friend who is also passionate in their Christian faith and beliefs in Dave's principals.

Next interview will be next week.  I have to fill out a questionnaire and then they'll e-mail to set up a time with 2 of the sales managers.

Re: UPDATE! : Job Interview w/ Dave Ramsey's team!

  • wow - that's amazing and quite the decision to make while being pregnant.  Would your DH be able to find a job over there.  What about your SAHM plans after #2 is born?
  • @vlagrl35 We'll cross that bridge if we get there about H's job.  We discussed that we may have him and DD stay back here for a bit to get the house sold and so he can wrap up his job.
If he couldn't find anything right away, we talked about possibly having him stay home with the kids until he does.  This would definitely mean me not staying home after #2 is born.  I feel like it's what I want to do right now because it's an opportunity to get out of my unfulfilling/unchallenging job.

  • That's awesome!  Uprooting would be a big deal, so I would research COL there before you go, especially since you're in such a low COL area right now.  But what a great opportunity for you!
  • That's awesome! I think you would be the perfect candidate for that position considering all your successes and that you followed the plan yourself!
  • @julieanne912 We've done some research and the position is in one of the suburbs.  So we would live either out in the burbs or even further out in the countryside, which of course is cheaper.
We'll most definitely rent for the first year though and that will be the tightest time for us financially.  Since we would use cash to pay for a house.  With the cash we do have we'll be able to get a decent 3 bedroom house, with a little bit of land, about 20 minutes from the office.

  • Congratulations on making it this far!
H and I like it where we are and we don't want much change in our life but the little footnote on that is if the right incredible opportunity came along we would have to consider it even if it meant uprooting/change/relocation.  Sounds like you have the same footnote :)
  • Congratulations and best of luck!!
  • sounds like a plan @brij2006 - either way you will get out of that unfulfilling job either with this new one or SAH.
  • Congrats! This sounds like a perfect opportunity for you and I hope it works out!

That is exactly what this is.  We've talked about what jobs or reasons we would uproot our family and move.  #1 is if one of us gets a position at Ramsey Solutions.  #2 is if H gets a position at the manufacturing company he's sought after for years in St Louis.  Those are pretty much the only 2 ways.  We wouldn't move just to move.

  • Congrats!  I hope you get the job.

He's in Franklin, right?  If so, do know that traffic is still bad out there.  It's a pretty affluent area, so most people who live there work in the city.  I would look for a place that's either slightly north of Franklin so you can drive against traffic or even better, a place that doesn't require you to use the interstate at all to get to work.  I-65 changes from 2 lane to like 5 lane right in the middle of Franklin, and it just bottlenecks traffic.

Nashville has gotten pretty $$$ recently - the hotel and restaurant prices now average more than NYC!

When thinking about your budget, there are a few things you might want to account for with a move to Nashville....  Tennessee has no state income tax, so if you itemize you can actually deduct the sales tax you pay as long as you track it (sweet).  Also, a LOT of people use private school there.  I'm not sure about Franklin residents, but it's something to look into.

Some perks...  You have a major research university there, so there are a TON of concerts, sporting events, lectures by famous people, etc. that the public can attend for pretty cheap.  Vanderbilt is part of the SEC, but we suck, so you can get tickets for SEC games for a lot less than you would pay at any other stadium.  The public golf courses in Nashville are fantastic and really cheap.  There is a zoo, huge botanical gardens, several big parks, lakes, etc.  Franklin is actually pretty close to the Nashville airport, which is getting more and more flights because of how popular Nashville has become.  And one of my bff's calls Tennessee "God's country" because the entire state is so beautiful.  It's much prettier than GA, AL, or MS.

  • Oh and how could I forget - Nashville has 2 costcos, one of which is in Franklin/Brentwood!  Seriously, Costco will change your life :)

  • Haha @hoffse Great insight!
It's actually located in Brentwood near the mall.  We'd probably try to find an apartment within about a 20-30 minute commute that is cheaper, if possible.  Just not sure exactly where we'd look.  I found one in Spring Hill that looked decent for a reasonable price, but it does mean taking the interstate in and about a 25 minute commute.

He also has a 2nd office location that some employees work out of, but I'm not sure where that one is located.

  • Wow!  That's amazing news.  Knowing what big Ramsey fans you and your H are, they couldn't pick a better candidate for enthusiasm!  Wishing you lots of luck.  For the interview, you know the DR philosophies inside and out.  And you and your H are like poster children for his program.  I think those would be good opportunities to "speak from the heart" and really let your personality shine through, amidst the typical professional responses.

Have you ever checked out the website Glass Door?  It's technically a "job searching" website, but has a lot of inside info for specific companies written by users who are past/present employees.  Including interview questions asked.

General interview advice.  I make a checklist of previous accomplishments/skills/experiences.  Including real life examples.  I'll highlight the ones that are especially relevant for whatever job I am interviewing for.  I have that list in front of me for phone interviews and read it over right before I go into in-person interviews.

Ok seriously, I just checked on Google maps and you could walk to Costco from work.  It' 0.5 miles away.

I know I'm crazy, but that would pretty much do it for me :)

Bahahaha! I haven't been in a Costco since I was a nanny I Chicago.  Only reason I went was for the samples, sanity, and that the carts held 2 kids. I only shopped for things for the family, not myself since I lived alone.  I'd probably end up with a membership at some point. ;-)

Truth.  Although the executive membership is $110/year, but it gives you 2% back on everything you buy (except alcohol, tobacco, and gas).  H and I buy so much stuff there that the membership basically pays for itself.

Oh the samples.  I scored some seriously good Costco samples this weekend.  Ours was giving out huge samples of pumpkin pie!

  • so we are getting a Costco literally 10 minutes away from our house!  Now I don't have to go downtown to shop costco.  happy dance!
  • I have one right outside my neighborhood and a sams club.  We have both.  Work pays for one.
    Daisypath Anniversary tickers
  • Winner winner chicken dinner, I have a Costco 5 min from my office, AND one right by my house (on the way home from work) haha!

The best was at my old job though, Costco was across the parking lot.  I'd walk over there all the time to buy my little salads for lunch, and munch on the samples.  One day, on a random weekday, they were giving out pretty generous samples of New York Strip steak, and were featuring their cheese section so they had like 5 different cheese samples out.  Didn't even hardly need lunch that day.
  • Good luck with the interview!  They must be pretty excited about your application if they contacted you that fast!

  • That's amazing news @brij2006! That sounds like an absolutely perfect position for you. All fingers and toes are crossed that it works out.
  • @als1982 It's a sales position for business to church sales.  Making contacts with churches across the country about offering their programs.  I thrive in a sales position as long as I'm selling something I'm passionate about. So this fits me.
It's base salary plus unlimited commission potential.  Which is awesome because in my current position I'm tapped out every year with my commission opportunity and I usually hit it by the middle or 3/4 of the way through the year.  Which honestly really sucks and I hate.
Just have no clue what to tell them for a base salary, if they ask.  Since I know he has almost all of his employees set up this way.  Work harder, get paid more.  But I don't know how much of it is commission driven.  Is that half of someone's' income in their company, or is it 1/4?  Is the base salary usually a livable wage and the commission is just gravy?

The phone interview is tomorrow at 12:30 and I'm insanely nervous.  Looked up my prior sales numbers since I started my current position and figured up what my annual growth of the business was and retention is.  So I have those hard facts put together to give them from my experience.  Then I know the rest is likely mostly going to be them getting to know me, my knowledge about the company and Dave's principals, if my beliefs and drive align with the mission of the company.  I know that they're very thorough with their interviewing and don't ask the usual questions, so I'm not exactly sure what to prepare for.  Guess just be myself and hope for the best.  That's kind of what I did in the application process.  Even truthfully answered the question of "what's your greatest downfall in your professional life?" I really thought my answer would knock me out of the chances, but my biggest downfall is that if I'm not busy and challenged, I can get off track and lose my focus quickly (biggest hate of my current job, it's never consistently busy or challenging so I get sidetracked).  Oh well, if I don't match up, then it's not meant to be.
