@labro - investments

The votes are still rolling in, but it looks like we bet wrong (gee thanks every. Single. Poll. Out. There.)

The markets are already open in Asia, and it's crazy.

I can't watch.  Oh well, at least we are young....

  • I was just coming over to post the same. Buckle up. It's going to be a very bumpy ride.
  • So tomorrow is going to be a good day to throw some money at your ROTH accounts...

  • I came over here for this :)  It will be down but not for long.  Thinking of going to Fidelity soon and talking to an advisor on what to buy.  I haven't bought stocks in awhile.
  • I had a strong feeling this would happen, so we have stocked away about $10,000 in cash in our various retirement accounts.  Anyone have suggestions on how we should invest it?  Typically we buy dividend earning stocks for industry leaders (ex. Johnson & Johnson, 3M, Disney, Amazon, etc.)

But yes, very sad day.  I've lost a little respect for and faith in humanity.  I shake my head about a vast majority voting against what are truly their personal interests.

If you consider four years "not long."

  • I didn't tinker too much or sell stuff but did hold off on investing part of my Roth contribution. Maybe I knew in my heart this would happen, too.

So scared for what this will mean for my friends who are Muslim or gay, and my friends with chronic health problems who will be screwed once the ACA is gone. Not to mention our nation's involvement in important agreements like the Paris Accord and NATO.  I don't even know what to do with myself today. I'm not naive enough to claim moving to Canada, very few people are going to do that, but do I belong here if this is what the nation wants?

I feel the same way.  I am telling myself that my state, and those aroudn me, didn't vote that way. I am hoping that even if federal laws change (not that I would be happy abaout it) at least the environment around me will still be the same.  I might be a little naive about that though...
  • You're not @kmurphy2131. Our two states are a comfy little bubble, which may be why I feel so blindsided. We will still have good healthcare options, and marriage equality will remain supported and strong. Racism will continue to be a problem everywhere. That's something I'd love to find a way to help. Supporting immigrant communities is really important to me. It's a tough time to take on new things, but maybe somehow there's a good way.
  • It's really shocking.  I do think that a lot of his votes were driven by people who wanted to say FU to the entire federal establishment.  I also think a lot of it is a back lash against Obamacare.  Unfortunately for the democrats, the whole country's premiums just went up a lot within the last couple of weeks.  If you are a family of 4 making a middle class income, and suddenly your insurance premiums go up 40% right before a huge election, that's an issue that can immediately direct your vote (even if you dislike both candidates).

The democrats (and the media) need to look at the map showing the house races.  It's huge swaths of red, with pockets of blue along the coast and in a few discrete areas.

People who say they are moving to Canada or wherever are being ridiculous.  They have no idea how that actually happens.

Sorry @labro I was thinking of you when I started tuning into coverage late last night.
Time to settle in for a bumpy ride  :/

I had a bad feeling all year about a potential market downturn.  One of the reasons why our money went to SL payoff this year instead of the market.
  • My husband lived in Canada for 5 years and always talks about moving back, but not this time around. He knows it's too important for us to stay and do whatever we can going forward to put out the trash fire that our country has become.

Also I may just be a hormonal pregnant lady, but I legit sobbed all morning and apologized to a picture of my embryo that I was bringing it into the world in a country full of hate and ignorance.
  • We've been holding off on putting the remaining funds into our mutual fund because of the election.  I'm so glad we waited longer.  I shot off an e-mail to our advisor this morning and we'll dump it in tomorrow.

  • Hah. Well, at least I bought at the end of the slide last week and had two big gains to set myself up for the shit show that the next few months will surely be.

I have some faith that in time the markets will settle...and like you said, we're young, and we have time on our side.

I'm so incredibly disappointed in the outcome of all of this though.

Yeah we'll see what the aftermath is like, but it opened higher than I was expecting this morning.  The fed is probably not going to raise rates with all of the uncertainty, so hopefully that will keep things a little higher.

That's true.  For us the ACA has been good but each year there are less providers and less plans and premiums go up hence my post from yesterday.  I'm hoping that it just gets tweeked and they also open up state lines to bring in competition.  Also the economy hasn't been the greatest for us either - less than 1% every year.  IDK what's going to happen but for me it's best if I remain positive and the markets can't be down for that long.  How long were they down for those in the Brexit?
