NMMR birthday party opinions wanted

I turn 39 next year and am thinking of having a 39th birthday party.  Opinions wanted on if that is silly and if I should just wait until I turn 40 in 2018.

For context, H and I have small get togethers at our house a few times a year (10-15 people usually watching football or hockey) because we like to entertain.  We have gotten into a kind of pattern of having a bigger, blow out party (30+ people) every other year.  I guess that is just about when we feel energy and budget ready to do it.  First we had a summer party in 2011 when we were dating.  Then in 2013 H turned 40 and we had a party at our house that we had just moved into about a month prior.  We also got married and had a reception in 2013.  In 2015 we had a Christmas party at our house.

Doing it at 40 kind of makes more sense but on the other hand is there really that much of a difference between 39 and 40?  2018 will be a big year for us with our 5th anniversary anyway (and probably a big vacation to celebrate).

Also, neither of us is really into birthday parties on a regular basis.  The last time I had one was at age 25 and when we decided to do H's 40th he said he hadn't had a birthday party in his modern history.  If we have a birthday party for my birthday it may be a very long time before we have another one for either of us.

Re: NMMR birthday party opinions wanted

  • I would just wait one more year! It will be nice to celebrate 2 larger occasions
  • Honestly....  If you want to have a party, then just have a party.  I'm not a fan adult birthday parties, especially ones hosted by the honoree or their spouse.  It's AWish IMO, not to mention awkward for guests.  Should they bring a gift, or not?  Have a kickass party, just don't tie it to a celebration for yourself.

  • I'd wait until 40 otherwise just call it a party without attaching it to a birthday. I told my husband he only gets a birthday party out of me every decade. We had a party near the time of his last birthday, but no one cares about 32. We just invited people over for a board game day and BBQ and a few people also said "oh hey man, Happy Birthday too", but it wasn't a "birthday party" on the invite.
  • If I were invited to a 39th bday party, I would a little bit think it was odd.  But nothing I would side-eye or think much about either way.  In my book, a fun party is a fun party.
  • In my circle it wouldn't be odd. Lots of our friends do birthday parties as adults, and it's sort of assumed that nobody does gifts, singing, etc. It's more just a fun excuse for a party, and the hosts always make it a good time. Sounds like it must be different with different groups though based on others' reactions here.
  • I would wait until you are 40.  I thru a surprise party for DH last year on his 40th.  FWIW I invite all my friends out to celebrate my birthday every year.  I'm an only child so friends are important.
  • I would probably wait until the 40th. I don't think adult parties are weird either. We did a bbq/gathering for DH's 30th party where we smoked meats, played horse shoes and hung out with friends. It was low key and fun. Some people brought him gifts and some didn't. We didn't ask them to bring anything though and provided all the food.

  • I'm more of the mind to wait til 40 just because it makes more sense....but I can also see the perspective of having a blow-out party to celebrate your last year in your 30s too. Most adult birthday parties I see around here are for big milestone parties anyway and it's more about going and having a good time and giving the birthday boy/girl a ribbing about their age. We had a 60th birthday for my dad and the neighbors all brought joke gifts for him, but the point of the party was just to invite everyone over, eat good food, and drink.
  • I'm also of the opinion that if you want to have a party, have a party.  But, I love to throw parties and we do about 2 big ones per year (this year it was Super Bowl and Labor Day, both with 30+ people, year before was just a housewarming because we were getting married that year, about 40 came to that).  You don't have to necessarily tie it to your birthday, even if it falls around that time.
