Re: Welcome to Monday.....brrrr

  • We were like that all weekend. We're  at 21 now and it's supposed to be in the 40's tomorrow.
  • My dog was extra cuddly this weekend.  We had a good time lounging and keeping each other warm :)

In the teens here this AM but climbing up to the 30's by the end of the day.

The remote car starter I got for Christmas 2 years ago is the gift that keeps on giving!

    We've just hit 9.....:(

I actually bumped up the downstairs unit earlier than normal this morning since it's a gas furnace just so the upstairs would get to temperature.  It's so cold that the upstairs heat pump went to aux heat.....:(

We're supposed to see a high of 31.  Here's to hoping.

I love my remote start!  The one on my wife's car, not so much.  She's got a Honda with push button start, so if you auto-start it and then open a door, it shuts the car off and you have to restart it. :(

  • Just looked at the forecast, and tomorrow's high is expected to be 42, with the next week forecast to be in the mid-20s to mid-30s. Sounds warm to this upper Midwesterner :) But, snow and ice pellets will likely accompany these temps, unfortunately.
  • It was 20 when we woke up this morning...but supposed to be something like 68-70 by the end of the week. I've resolved to put down some weedkiller before then, just need to wait one or two more days for the rest of the ice from Friday to melt away. I just can't believe how warm it's going to get...and then stay that way. Not that it ever gets THAT cold here...but consistent 60s in January is pretty abnormal.
  • When I was driving into work this morning it was 2 degrees and it's only going to be 23 today. So glad I got a car starter in my new car, best thing ever!!! We got 6" of snow this weekend but will be in the 50's on Friday!
  • At the end of last week (which is now the weather you all have), it was -12 by me, but about 45 minutes north, it was in the -30s.

And today?  In the 50s, but with 75mph chinook wind gusts... weeeeee!

It's about 18 here- typical for this time of the year. Waiting at DD#1's bus stop hasn't been too bad- makes me glad we don't have a dog though!

  • We're in the mid 20s today, which feels downright balmy!  It's pretty windy today, but I'd rather have that than the rain we're supposed to get tomorrow. I love rainy days in the spring and summer, but in the winter they're pretty awful.
  • It was in the 30s most of the weekend.  Even dropped below freezing at night.  Probably the 40s today.  But will be in the 70s tomorrow.  Crazy how drastically it can change.

I agree with @labro, it's been really cold on days here and there but, overall, this winter has been pretty mild.

Trying to get this pic in:

Ugh, I give up.  There was a really fun graph on TK last month about how different snow levels affect different parts of the country.  With the South being the worst effect, the East Coast being the middle and the Midwest being the best.  Here are a few of the snippets:

Flurries:  South-mild panic and general sense of doom, Midwest-start to THINK about wearing long pants.

1-4", schools closed in the South.  Travel advisories for the East Coast.  Midwest brushes the snow off the grill for the Packers game.

24-36" South - Complete societal breakdown, East Coast-Total travel ban, Midwest-Yoga classes cancelled

36+ South-Nothing left alive except small burrowing mammals, Midwest-Snow day!  (except for you)

Really? I think in all of the above instances East coast and Midwest should be reversed.

-SIB-  I think the East Coast used to be a lot more "get out there it's just some snow" but people have wised up and realized (a) 99% of jobs are worth risking a major car accident and (b) most people can work from home if something is THAT urgent.

We are in the north east and had the thruway down into PA shut down this weekend.. too many people have been stranded in the past. Earlier last week, people that live 20 minutes south of me had school kids stuck on buses for 7+ hours, some were stuck at school until midnight - 4am the next day.
Our village seems to be in a bubble- right now we have a dusting. If the roads are bad, I wfh and can walk to pick up DD#1 from school, DD#2 I could still walk to pick up, but it would be about 2x the distance. DH (teacher) has to go to work if it's open but his district is good about taking precautions.

Lol to the bolded - it's so true. No snow for the Packer game yesterday, but it was downright cold. The game sold out.
  • The worst snowdall we had was 30" and we were stranded for 3 days...it feels like every storm well under this number won't ever compare in my mind, but we get through every storm just fine....I get annoyed with the bread and milk rush over a flake of snow, but the 30" is cause to stock up!

I'm in one of those areas where the media goes into a frenzy everytime it snows.  Here it'll be gone in a day or two, roads have already been plowed and are passable.  Yet never fails, there's always the mass panic at the grocery stores and gas stations. :(

This makes me laugh so hard.
I'm in the Midwest.  All of this is pretty accurate.  Although the northeastern part of the states does seem to get hammered worse than we do and they keep on going.
Ours is the wind that kills us.  It can snow 5 inches but if the wind picks up, it's white out conditions.  Here we get bitter cold too.  It's not uncommon to have a couple weeks where the temp doesn't get above zero.  That part sucks.

  • I was born in Ohio.  Lived in Maine.  It just blows my mind how much Virginia freaks out over minor storms.

  • It's snowed 3x in the 15 years I've lived in NOLA.  It's super rare.  People, myself included, become giddy like little kids.

You'll see offices emptied out in the middle of the workday as everyone runs out to throw snowballs at each other.  People stare out the windows in utter awe.  And anyone who is originally from the Midwest or East Coast looks at us like we're nuts.

The last time it happened, it started at about 8:00AM and continued through noon.  But then the snow totally stopped and quickly started melting.  When I drove home at 5:00PM through a residential area, there were a bunch of houses with grass lawns, colorful flower borders...and one 2-3' snowman in the middle of the green yard.  The packed snow took longer to melt and those snowmen were the only evidence left, lol.

You just don't want to be out on the roads.  Cars sliding everywhere.  Accidents all over the place.

My freshman year of college (in Boston where I'm from) my Texan roommate saw her first snowfall. She thought it was "SO MUCH" even though it was about half an inch lol. Her awe was adorable. And then I took her shopping for winter gear and taught the poor girl how to properly layer lol.
  • It's going to be 60 today and this weekend there is a good chance we will get freezing rain - crazy!
  • Supposed to have a high of 54.  It's currently 45.  Had some rain overnight, so the snow is starting to melt.

  • I'll be honest, though I am proud not to be one of them, the Northeast has a lot of snow whiners. It drives me crazy because it happens EVERY YEAR. Whining about it gains you nothing. I feel like a good chunk of our population just wants to complain as much as possible until they retire and move to Florida. The midwesterners I know are much less complainy so I'd say that infographic is accurate.
  • I'm a midwesterner and I LOVE winter weather.  I'm hoping we do get some ice this weekend because I love being stuck inside with my family.

I'm totally guilty of being a whiner about winter weather and I'm very excited to move to Florida eventually. My H and I talk about it all the time. I was born and raised in MD and all my family lives here so I know it will be hard for me to actually leave, but man I HATE cold weather.
