Resolution accountability post.

We're now ten days in to 2017!  How are your New Year's resolutions going, financial or otherwise?

Re: Resolution accountability post.

  • We are going strong! Our main focus is to cut back on take-out and make sure we grocery shop and then actually eat what we buy before it goes bad. I haven't bought breakfast or lunch at work once yet. The other night DH wanted Chinese food and was about to cave and order takeout so I had my first attempt at making orange chicken and it was decent - needs work but a solid first try! I'm not going to pretend we have to eat 100% healthy at every meal because we'll fail fast - but if we're going to eat junk at least it will be homemade junk  ;)
  • Great post idea! Over a fish fry, H and I discussed and decided what our goals (financial and personal) and plans for the year are (shout out to whoever posted that layout! I love it) and I wrote them down on a whiteboard that we'll hang in our kitchen to keep us accountable.

Our financial resolutions are a a work in progress, but I'm happy with the progress. We 1. decided what the goals are 2. determined a somewhat aggressive car loan payoff schedule and made the first large payment of the schedule 3. decided what to do with my bonus (part to my Roth IRA, part to the car loan) 4. Set Google calendar reminders on the 15th of each month to review spending/budget goals, and on the 28th of each month to set the next month's budget.

As far as personal, we've both been drinking less alcohol, which is a start to eating healthy...:)

Most of mine were for year-end goals, but I have gotten the car situation squared away, moved most of my photos off of snapfish, and H did a 2-weekend spruce up of our basement bathroom that turned out remarkably well given the time and money spent (under $500).  We have been plugging along.

  • My only minor resolution was to not eat out for lunch during the week for the month of January, for both financial reasons, and "I can't keep eating like this without getting more fat" reasons LOL.  So far so good.  Today would have been a day that I would have just bought lunch, because we ended up not having leftovers from dinner.  Instead, I spent a bit of extra time this morning to make a sandwich to bring.

I DID finally set up my HSA auto deposit yesterday.  I set up the HSA when I started this job but kept delaying the start because I wanted more money for my actual savings account.   The next step of this is to transfer over my HSA from my old job into this one.  Or, I could just leave it where it is since it's easy to use it when I need it.

My company is also starting up a new 401k program, the informational meeting for that is on the 27th.  They don't match, but I'll be starting a contribution once I'm allowed to.

Pretty good so far. Our bathroom is (finally!) complete and our home inspection for the HELOC is on Monday. We have postponed our usual Roth IRA contribution in December until the HELOC is approved- once that goes through, we'll move the 2016 balance over and then work on monthly withdrawals going forward.
We're doing good on expenses as well- for some reason, our Target bill has been averaging $189/month in 2016 but so far, it's only $75 and it will close in about a week... trying to get that down to $100/month.
Even with the upcoming HELOC, mortgage balance, and car loans, we should have everything paid off by Spring 2022... I'll continue to tweak the numbers to hopefully get it all paid off by EOY 2021.
Personal goals are still on track- no eating after 7pm has been keeping my weight stable (even through the holidays).. need to get up early in the morning and start working out to drop a few more (5 would be great, 8 would be amazing!)... so hard when it's cold and dark outside!

  • It's going ok. We'll have a high grocery bill for January, but that's because I'm mass-producing 40 freezer meals between this weekend and last weekend so over time we'll end up saving both in groceries and eating out. Otherwise not a ton to report yet.
  • We don't really do resolutions.  Its always the same for me - save money and improve on yoga.  I just got back into the yoga routine Sunday.  Going to the studio today and tomorrow.
  • My big resolution (marathon training) can't start for a few months, but our goal of continuing to live CC free has hit a couple of bumps. H likes to keep an emergency card on him, and has told me twice now that he used it for groceries a few days before payday to "keep a good buffer." We talked about other options (transfer money from savings, keep a larger buffer in checking, etc.) and why I wasn't comfortable with that (since it has been a slippery slope for us in the past) so I think we'll get through it.
  • On track to pay off my SL in March so that is good. Just throwing money at that. Until that's paid off I can't work many of my other goals.

Weight loss is slow, but that's my fault because I haven't been hitting the gym like I need to. I'm about 2 pounds from being in the "normal" weight/BMI category for my height and would like to hit that by the end of this month. Ultimate goal is to reach the middle of the range which would put me around 115 for my impressive (joking) height of 5' 1". ;)

I feel your pain!  I'm only 5'0" myself.  Pfft.  5-10 pounds can be the difference of a whole size when there isn't much height to spread that weight over.

At least its the same way and encouraging when losing.

I was just saying the other day that my height is both good and bad when it comes to weight because you can see when I put any on (bad) but you can also easily tell when I take any off (good).
  • Well it was going good so far, but we are plagued with vet bills, and possibly more to come. I will never own a dog again.....

Nooooooo poor pup! And poor momma's wallet! Vet bills suck but I hopefully it's worth it in the end.

It used to be worth it...but in the last fews years there have just been so many problems...I feel like we are just keeping him alive at this point...it's been too hard to deal with and I love dogs, but don't think I could do it again...this one has scarred me for life. He'll be 11 in March.

That sucks. It's hard to figure out when it's time to say enough and just make them comfortable. My husband and I those people who are totally crazy about their pets and I've never understood why my mom won't get a dog - she had them growing up and she loves her "grandpup". And then about 6 weeks ago our 7.5 year old beloved bearded dragon died and DH and I were sobbing messes all day - my mom came over to give me a hug and even said "this part is why I can't have pets. I'll get one when I'm old enough to know I'll outlive it".

We were dealing with this for the past couple years with our almost 12 year old.  He had a surgery in Dec of 2014 for a ruptured spleen.  We opted to do that one because it was a fixable thing.  Then in Jan of 2016 his back legs stopped working, due to some back issues.  The surgery to fix it was like $7-8000.  We opted to just rest him and do medication, instead of the surgery, and if that didn't work, put him down.  Thankfully he mostly recovered (still takes medication but that's not very expensive), but we agreed the next time something big happens (like over $500), then that'll be it.  It's just so hard though, they're family :(

Ugh that is soo sad, the poor thing. Our dog has back issues too...but this time he is not eating much and has high liver enzymes so they may want to do an ultrasound...we've done one in the past, but I just financially don't want to move forward, but we will for now...it's just becoming too much
  • I'm absolutely crazy about my dog. Last week I had a very minor scare with her as she's been having some stomach issues, but I called my mom and H sobbing thinking something was seriously wrong with her. (There was blood involved so I don't feel I was over reacting too much) She's fine now after going on a bland diet for a few days, but H told me I need to start preparing now for the distant future when something happens (she's only 4 so we're hoping it's the distant future). She's my baby and aside for any other pets we get in the future, will likely be the only baby I ever know.

If it came down to it, I would spend anything on her to make her better if I knew it would fix the issue and give her better quality of life. It's ridiculous I know, but she's my child.

  • @abrewer5 I think you're in good crazy dog lady company here!
  • What I like about dogs is they are sweet, adorable, perpetual toddlers...but you don't get arrested if you leave them home alone, lol.  (Sorry for the tangent)

  • Oh I'm a crazy dog lady too (after all we have 3, and would be OK with more most of the time LOL).  It just gets to a point when they get old when you're just needlessly prolonging their life though.  That's what makes it so hard... they're your babies, but yet you are also the one who has to decide when they die sometimes :(
  • BTW this is a bit off topic, but The Pioneer Woman's dog Charlie died this week and I was reading about it and sobbing, cause our old guy is a basset hound too.

    LOL YES. I love this.

I totally agree. That is the heartbreaking part about pets. I would do anything or pay anything to give my dog the quality of life she deserves but if it gets beyond that point to where she will not have the same quality of life I would have to make the hard decisions. Selfishly I would want to keep her going forever, but I know that's not possible. Although I regularly joke I will turn her into a franken-dog like in the movie Frankenweenie.
  • I have kept up with my healthier diet now for 14 days. It's been little to no refined sugars, more veggies, pomegranate juice (TTC related) and I have done at least 3-4 days of exercise each week.

Finance-wise, I have not established new goals for this year yet...so not doing so hot in that regard. We need to re-evaluate our budget, increase retirement savings and find some new focus areas.

@vlagrl35: Some research and studies indicate it can help build the uterine lining up. I have a thin one after coming off Mirena (likely cause of my CP/MC) and am trying to find ways to increase its thickness.
