Monday Accountability

edited January 2017 in Money Matters

1. How MM was your weekend?

2. Any progress towards goals?

3. Seen any good movies lately?

Re: Monday Accountability

  • 1. $80 Groceries, $40 Gas for H and I, $20 Sushi, $25 Pet store

    2. We will be banking about $600 towards vacation

    3. I saw Sing- it was a cute movie, Passengers-  I liked it, and Deepwater Horizon- pretty good as well

  • We spent a lot on eating out but otherwise didn't spend any money this weekend.

Goals are progressing and on autopilot.  I got a 2.5% raise (about $1,000 a year) and we are trying to decide what to do with it.  We may wait until DH's raise is announced and then look at the total increase before we make decisions.

We haven't been to the movies lately, but I am looking forward to the live action Beauty and the Beast!

  • 1. How MM was your weekend? Not too bad. Friday - Got a couples massage spent $30 on tip for both of us (gift card/membership) and went car shopping. Mainly doing research in prep for my car being totaled. No word yet on that which is frustrating.  Saturday - $22 at target, +$37 from a return at Maurices. Sunday $35 on breakfast, $28 at dinner (had a gift card for the rest).

    2. Any progress towards goals? Worked on our tax return. I will probably file today. Not very MM but we're getting a decent amount back which will help with paying off my SL so that will be nice. 16 March can't come soon enough.

    3. Seen any good movies lately? I saw Office Christmas Party a few months ago and that was funny. Rouge One was good too. I was supposed to go see A Dog's Purpose next week, but I don't think I'll go now with the recently surfaced video.

  • 1. How MM was your weekend? Not too shabby. We spent about $75 on dinner/drinks/parking to celebrate a good friend's birthday on Saturday night. A total $80 to replace our leaky kitchen faucet (the faucet itself was actually purchase last week to take advantage of an Amazon warehouse deal, and then the rest of the spending this weekend was on some items to deal with a rusted nut that refused to let the old faucet free and some new connector thingys). Because the sink turned out to be more of a project than we anticipated and my mom ended up helping us I sprang for $25 on her favorite takeout place near my house as a thank you and a "we can't actually cook what we have in the house without a working sink" haha.

    2. Any progress towards goals? Same old same old. DH will get paid this week and there should be some significant overtime on this check which will go towards our pre-baby house projects.

    3. Seen any good movies lately? Not really. Besides Rogue One I'm not sure what movies we've even watched lately (and I was underwhelmed by Rogue One...)

  • 1. How MM was your weekend?

Spent $81 at Sam's and $140 at Walmart.  $26.50 of that was a prescription.  Usually it's $26.  The price didn't go up, the state has apparently started taxing prescription medication.  My parish (county) already does.

Obviously, I don't care about the 50 cents.  But the principle of it is infuriating and I do have higher dollar prescriptions where it does make more difference.

    2. Any progress towards goals?

Paid my HELOC down $2K.  Paid my CC debt down $700.

    3. Seen any good movies lately?

My H and I rarely go to the movies.  Nothing is coming to mind for good movies that came on tv recently.

  • 1. Our weekend started on Thursday due to traveling for a funeral. Since it was a family funeral, we spent a lot of time at 'the house' with the rest of the family, and our aunts & uncles paid for the food. So our expenses weren't too high - $15 for lunch on Thursday, $180 for hotel, $29 for dinner on Saturday, and whatever we paid for gas. We were back for church on Sunday, which we give $20 for.

    2. We met with a potential financial advisor last week, and liked him, so we're meeting with him this week to review what his thoughts are on our situation/goals/plans. As far as our January budget, the costs for traveling to the funeral were unexpected, so we'll have less extra to put toward the car loan principal. On the other hand, our raises went into effect this past week so we're able to adjust the budget a bit. I haven't had a chance to look at how this all affects budgeting yet.

    3. We don't watch movies very often, but we saw Sully a couple weeks ago and enjoyed it. H has been into WWII documentaries on Netflix lately.
  • 1. How MM was your weekend? $60 on groceries on Sunday for a bunch of last minute stuff my mom had forgotten for dinner. The cost really went up because she primarily needed wine and hard lemonade.

    2. Any progress towards goals? DH got paid on Friday but that went straight into the To Be Budgeted category.

    3. Seen any good movies lately? The last movie we saw in theaters was Rogue One. We got two free movie passes for Christmas but haven't used them yet.

    @AprilZ81 Congrats on the raise!!

  • @short+sassy prescriptions are taxed?! That's ridiculous! It always cracks me up that we're called "Taxachusetts" and yet we don't pay tax on any necessities including prescriptions, food, and clothing.
  • 1. How MM was your weekend?

Pretty good.  H worked Saturday so there's some extra income.
I have also stuck to my cash grocery budget for this month and am going to end it pretty spot on.  Pretty proud since it was a smaller budget than usual.

    2. Any progress towards goals?
Just cash flowing a ton of repairs to H's car.  It's all stuff we've been avoiding doing.
Also cash flowing getting the Expedition fixed up and ready to sell.  Operation, brij is coming home and we need to lower expenses, has commenced.

    3. Seen any good movies lately?

We rented Sully and Deepwater Horizon.  Both were pretty good.  I also tried to watch The Impossible, but there was a scene where the main character had a major gash in her leg and I about threw up so I stopped.  Still want to finish watching it, but my pregnancy nausea isn't allowing that.  I don't have a weak stomach either so it was weird to be grossed out enough to have to shut the movie off.

Yes, it is outrageous.  It's a 6.5% tax on prescriptions...less than the "usual" 10% sales tax.  Which is outrageously high.  I think we're tied with a few other cities for highest sales tax.  However, we do have reasonable property taxes, including the first $75K in value waived for a personal home (Homestead Exemption).

My parish taxes everything, food and clothing included.  The state taxes clothing and some, but not all, food items.

    1. How MM was your weekend?

--Not great. We ate out twice. At least with one we purchased gift cards at Costco (that saved $10) and then had a $20 reward discount for the restaurant. So our $70 meal ended up costing about $40 with tip. Then we met my brother in his city for dinner and paid.

--Officially purchased my leased vehicle. Surprisingly, it worked out in my favor. The total cost I will be paying for my car is about $1,800 less than if I had purchased it at the beginning because I was able to finance at 0.9% for 3 years. Now my loan is at 3.25% for $16,000, but I am paying it off in 1 year, so not worried about interest.

    2. Any progress towards goals?

--Continue to pay off car loans early

    --Increased HSA contribution this month

--Still need to create new goals

    3. Seen any good movies lately?

--We saw Sing back in December, it was pretty good.

  • 1. We didn't do much so it was good.  About $60 on groceries which included food for having 2 friends over yesterday for football.  $12.50 unplanned on dinner out Saturday night.  But when the weather is nice enough to walk to the taco stand without coats it is a good unplanned expense.

We were supposed to Mystery Shop a movie Saturday night but we found out the theater had closed during the summer....wtf?  How did the company schedule a shop for January for a theater that closed in August?  Not happy about that one but glad we found out during our pre-visit call.

    2. Not going to start tracking goals until the end of the month.

    3. Manchester by the Sea was good but it is not a movie everyone is going to like.  Acting is great and the the story is "real" --ie, kind of slow, messy and boring at times.  Not a feel good movie.

We saw Arrival the other month and I really liked it.  Sci-Fi can be hit or miss with me but I thought this one was really good and Amy Adams is a strong female lead.

Office Christmas party was decent, typical for that type of comedy.  It has some good laughs.
  • 1) Had an OK weekend - spent about $100 on groceries, but that included a $30 splurge meal.  H wanted to try making moules frites, so we did that yesterday.  He hit it out of the ballpark, and we'll be doing that again.  Anyway it was some extra ingredients we don't normally buy, and we had to go to whole foods to find the mussels.  We struck out at our regular grocery stores.  I don't know why because they are in season right now.

Other than that, about $30 on gas and I think that's really it.

    2) I finished preparing our tax return, and our basement is nearly done.

    3) We watched Bourne recently, and it was OK.  Not great.  Not a movie, but The Crown is amazing, and we started the next season of Man in the High Castle last night.

  • 1. Spendy, but planned. $150 on a couples massage and $55 on dinner for our anniversary. $99 on groceries and $30 on a tank of gas.

    2. $150 to the house account and $100 to savings.

    3. We haven't seen a movie in a long time, all we've been watching is Shameless on Netflix. We're boring.
  • 1. Eh, not the greatest but it was all necessities (mostly :)) Friday night I trekked to Trader Joe's to stock up on some favorites, that was $60.  Saturday was around $100 for grocery store, but that included a few clearance clothing items, and some meat stock up, $14 on a Papa Murphy's pizza, and $29 on gas.  Nothing on Sunday, except for a toll charge to take H to the airport, but that's pre-paid through my toll account.

    2.  Moved $100 to savings.  My paycheck was a bit shorter than I expected, because of the way the days fell, I got paid on 80 hours instead of 88 like normal.

    3.  We watched "The Infiltrator" on Amazon Prime, it was really really good.  We had watched all of the Narcos series, so it was cool to link those two stories together, especially since it all (mostly) happened for real.

@hoffse I binged on The Crown a couple weekends ago, it was so good!  I'm now watching Victoria on PBS on Sunday nights and have a big list of stuff on Netflix and our DVR to watch now that H is travelling during the week.
  • @mustard76 I LOVE Shameless. I'm all caught up for now, but I sure do miss it! Can't wait for the new season.
  • 1 - not bad - we ate out twice and got a few items at the store yesterday so I could try a new oven baked taco recipe - it was yum!

2 - finished all the research for auto/home carriers and will make the switch next month.  working on long/short term ins currently and marketing the music room for rental so we can have extra cash flow.

3 - if you want a heavy romance movie check out "you before me"

We're on season 4, so we'll probably be right on time when the new season comes out.

Ugh!  You would be shocked at how incompetent MS companies and/or their clients can sometimes be.

There are two fast food locations I had shopped for years.  First with one MS company, then with a second one when the contract changed.  Normally with those shops, both the drive thru and the dine-in had to be shopped.  Except those two particular locations did not have drive thrus.  I had to explain that over a dozen times to both companies.  Not to mention whatever other shoppers who shopped that location.

With the second company, they even had the gall to tell me that "according to their records" one of those locations had a drive thru.  I sent back a snarky note that I couldn't help their records were wrong.  But I was very familiar with the location and it doesn't have a drive thru.  I welcomed them to Google the location and tell me if they saw a drive thru.  Never received a response back, but they finalized my shop one day later.  HA!

  • 1. $12 H beer, $8 snacks at birthing class break

    2. No progress. Our car tax and registration payments were both due this month, plus a medical bill. We're still getting in the rhythm of all the extra payments RI has relative to MA.

    3. We really liked Rogue One!

Thankfully this was our first snafu, so hopefully we don't have more big issues.
