GTKY: What do you collect?

Me: Antique green glass. I began as a child, when my grandma gave me several old dark green vases. Now my collection is displayed all over our home, and it is probably about 30 pieces.

Re: GTKY: What do you collect?

  • I collect rubber duckies.  I don't go crazy with it, though.  I probably have about 20.  My keychain is a rubber duck.  Our wedding cake topper were bride/groom rubber ducks.  We also had bride/groom rubber duck Mardi Gras style beads that we wore for our rehearsal dinner and flying out for our honeymoon.  Now those beads are hanging from an armoire and the wedding cake topper ducks have a place of honor on our bookshelf.
  • I'm not big on collections since I kind of lean minimalist but when I was a kid I had a sticker collection.  Remember those old scratch and sniff stickers?  They were so 80's!

    My current collections are:
-a shoebox with old concert tickets, play tickets and celebrity autographs
-a couple of books with all of the postcards I have received over the years
-6 or 7 stuffed Kermit the frogs in various sizes including one giant one that I won at Dave and Busters many years ago

The Kermits are funny because after I got a few of them I started noticing them in various places when I travel...such as a shop window in Japan and a bar in Connecticut. Random Kermits in random places are apparently not that uncommon.

@short+sassy H and I did a series of shops at a local restaurant chain.  A requirement was to order a blue drink with a little duck floating in it.  I think I collected 7 of those ducks while doing those shops.  I have a few in my cubicle and a few in my house.  They are very cheerful to look at.

I also lean minimalist, and the thing I collect most is memories and passport stamps.  But, if I had to choose a thing, I'd say stemware.  I pretty much have any kind of glass you could need, white wine glasses (with stems and without), red wine glasses, flutes, martini glasses, a few copper for mules, highballs, etc.  Some are cut crystal and others are just glass.  Funny thing is, we don't even keep liquor in the house unless we're hosting...

  • Do collections count as collections if they are for functional items you use all the time? I tend toward minimalist, but I have a lot of dishes/glassware for entertaining. I also have an addiction to notebooks....I buy them faster than I can write and fill them up (which is kind of saying something considering how much I write...), but they do eventually get used!
  • I don't collect anything anymore. I really just hate having stuff in my house.

I used to collect Dalmatian stuff though. :) I've always LOVED Dalmatians. I have a few things still, but not many.

  • I collected Madame Alexander dolls as a kid.  I still have them in a box somewhere, and they will go either to our kid, our niece, or ebay someday if nobody in our family wants them.

I have a pretty big collection of china, stemware, silver, etc.  It's from our wedding though.

These days we collect art from our trips.  We usually pick out one thing to bring home.  We have a couple paintings from France and Chinatown in San Fran.  We have a nice glass bowl that was blown in Murano, Italy and our obligatory Catholic household cross is from the Vatican.  I bought a tile from the 1600's in Amsterdam.  Our nativity set is hand carved from the Christmas markets in Germany.  We don't like a ton of clutter, but we enjoy bringing 1-2 small things into our home from our travels.

We also collect art books and photographs.  I make a photo book for each trip we take, and we buy art books for buildings that really interest us or prohibit photographs.

I think the only thing I actually collect is my Waterford stemware...but it's more about building up a full set over time because the stuff is so stupid expensive even for just a water goblet.

It's probably true that I collect books. I read them all again and again and have a tough time emotionally detatching myself from most of them. Last year when I was trying to purge I ended up filling up four boxes of books and moving them to a closet to make my bookshelves appear more open...and I still have 8 shelves full.

I like to collect small things from our trips as well. Mostly I buy colored pencil drawings of the places we visit. I have a couple framed but most of them are on a shelf together.
  • I have a large collection of depression glass, but I don't add to it as it just sits in boxes til I have a place to display it.  I also love love vintage kitchenware... dishes, cookware, utensils, etc.  The dishes I don't use much, but I actually use everything else.
  • Whenever we travel we get some sort of décor item.  Our study is travel themed. So I have a painting from London, little statue from Paris, a globe from Dominican Republic, a tiki from Hawaii, and painting from Mexico.
You could probably say those are a collection.

I also have about 20 Willow Tree angels that each have meaning and purpose.

I don't really collect anything- I have a good fabric stash but that's for quilts/sewing projects. It's all organized in a small dresser and cabinet. I'm also on a strict "sew my stash" this year so I'm not adding to the collection (only allowed backing for finished quilt tops since I don't really keep that on hand). I'll work through it all eventually  :)

  • I collect Christmas ornaments from our travels and life events.  Slowly my generic ornaments are being donated as I have enough decorations for 2 trees.

I also "collect" craft supplies.  I have a Cricut and a sewing machine and I have supplies for a ton of projects.  The good news is that I usually get around to finishing most of them and I almost always have things on hand to make gifts for special occasions.

I just finished a baby blanket/quilt using fabric I bought for our daughter.  Since I didn't have time to do the blanket before we lost her I finished it up this week to give to a couple in our church small group who is expecting a little girl in a few weeks.  It turned out beautiful!  I also made the card and a banner for the mantle of the baby shower.

I'm working on making custom pillows for my sister's house warming gift now.  I'm making the pillow slip cover and doing a custom painted design on both.

<3 You are so sweet.  They are going to love this and the sweet sentiment that you thought of them when finishing the blanket.

That is certainly the hope!  I go back and forth between telling them the story behind it or just giving the blanket to them.  I'm leaning more toward telling them, but at the same time I don't want to make it all about us.

I may write the story in the card and they can share with the rest of the group if they want.  Our small group is hosting a small shower/sprinkle for them (a total surprise) even though this is their third child.  They also had a miscarriage right before we got pregnant with Ava, so I had the idea to do a little something for them.

  • um does yoga clothing count lol :)  I"m not much of a collector.

@AprilZ81- that is so sweet of you and very thoughtful.  I hope your doing well.  I think of you and your little girl sometimes.
  • I've never considered myself to be a collector of anything, but I suppose I do collect Christmas ornaments. I buy an ornament on each vacation we go on, and we have ornaments for all our milestones (graduations, engagement, wedding, first home, etc). Unwrapping the ornaments is one of my favorite tasks at Christmastime because it's a walk through our lives and memories.

I have a couple pieces of beautiful Boleslawiec pottery and would love to expand that collection, but they are expensive.

als1982 I am with you on trying to become minimalist and collect memories or experiences. I used to collect soda bottles, key chains and beanie babies (as a teenager). Now, I just want to declutter as much as possible.

@labro I just saw in my ebates email that BBB is having a Waterford sale right now.  I don't know how good the prices are since I am not a Waterford shopper but thought I would mention it in case it is a good deal.

@csuave Thanks! I actually did some digging and the same sale is happening on the official Waterford site as well, which has 4% ebates compared to BBB!

ETA And apparently Macy's has 6% cash back. It's a manufacturer's sale so anyone who carries Waterford seems to have the markdown.

Cool find! I had an incomplete Waterford China set. I wanted 12 settings and only had five or six. I ventured to eBay and found several place settings from an individual (as opposed to a store) and she was just so happy to get rid of them for any price that I got a steal! If it's a private seller many times they will take any fair amount, not even ask price, just be be rid of it.
