Calculators and shopping

Does anybody remember the calculators on the carts at Walmart??  I remember when our walmart became a super walmart that they had calculators on carts and I thought it was so cool....they didn't last long though.  That was probably 15 years ago.  I think they are a great idea.  I am always writing the prices down next to the item on my list and then adding them up.

Re: Calculators and shopping

  • I don't think our Walmarts ever had those.

Like I said, when I was a teenager/living at home, I'd offer to grocery shop for my mom.  My mom is ALL CASH woman... to this day, she won't touch a debit card and HATES the checkbook (which most places don't take checks around here anymore anyway.)  So when I went, I added things up as I went to make sure I had enough cash with me.

Now MH and I have started doing this again.  We go into the grocery store thinking "We have our list, we have $120 budgeted, and we can't spend over $120."  If we are planning on eating out, we subtract that from the $120 (for example) and think "Okay, we have $80 that we can spend.. no more."

He writes down prices, I keep tally on the calculator.

  • I remember them!  I loved those calculators.  I was actually talking about them the other day to my mom - telling her they should do that again because I am seeing more and more people carrying calculators to the store (of course, then calculator sales would drop off)...
  • I don't remember that...sorry. Sounds like a great idea though!
  • It really is a good idea! If MH went with me to the store I'd probably bring my calculator. But by myself it would take me all day to shop! When I have my list I mentally add up what I think each item costs and what the total will be.

  • I write down the price next to each item on my list and then add them up in my head.  I like to keep track of prices too so I can see where the best deals are.

  • I don't remember Walmart having the calculators.  That is a good idea.  Our Stop and Shop now has this system where you can get one of the scan guns when you enter the store.  You can set up your cloth bags in the cart or put the paper or plastic bags in your cart.  As you go through the store, you scan what you are putting in your cart and then you bag it in one of the bags.  The scanner keeps a running total of what you are spending.  Blair and I can't figure out how they can keep people from stealing.
