hey, who's eaten at roy's?

i'm looking at their website and they have a pretty good looking prix fixe menu for $35.  we've never been there, though, and i'm reading yelp reviews, which are mixed.

been there, done that?  what did you think?

eta:  i know this place is a chain, which a lot of folks don't dig.  but it's closer to home than something on the west side or down in the OC.  plus, the menu looks good and since i'm broke as all hell, this is about as close as i can get to hawaii for the hub's birthday.  unless you count l&l hawaiian bbq, which i don't.

and now i want spam musubi.

Re: hey, who's eaten at roy's?

  • Decent chain food but don't expect fabulous and innovative.  They've fallen on hard times so this is a way of luring eaters in without having to drop their menu prices.  Personally, I think $35 is still over priced for the bland options but on the right night, it beats cooking and doing dishes.
  • I've been three times, at three different locations. The only time I didn't enjoy it was when we did a prix fixe menu on NYE. It's a decent restaurant, but if you go I recommend ordering off the regular menu instead.

  • I love Roy's!  If you go, you must have the kobe beef sushi roll.
  • I have many times...on someone else's dime.

It's fine but not my favorite.

Go to Animal, damn it!  It's so much better!  You can eat there for $35/head.  Go crazy on apps and skip the main dishes -- even the restaurant servers recommend this!

$11 Melted petit basque, chorizo, garlic bread
$15 Poutine, oxtail gravy, Vermont cheddar
$12 Pork belly, kimchi, peanuts, chili soy, scallion
$11 King crab newburg, sherry, buttered toast
$15 Two desserts of your choice

    $64 Total

You will be happy, full, and very satisfied.

  • I LOVE Roy's.  But then again I'm a cheap bastard and I don't have the most sophisticated palate.

  • I just got back from Roy's right now. ?I love their edamame and veggie sushi. ?MIL loves their butterfish.

  • i've been twice.

first time in downtown LA - the miso butterfish was insanely good! as was the shortribs. mmmm!

second time in pasadena the 2nd week they were open - majorly underwhelmed. :( the butterfish was like a completely different preparation and not a good one either. our calamari app was okay, but overall it was a pretty icky dinner. my CW has been to that one since and she said it's just okay. nothing like the one in downtown.

  • Oh, and get the chocolate souffle. ?TDF.

  • what's stopping me from animal is the distance from home. ?i really want to try and stay local - pasadena-ish. ?remember, i live in BFE.

i'm also eyeing smitty's grill - owned by the same folks as arroyo chop house and parkway grill.?

  • I like Roy's -- it's a nice, dependable, upscale chain.  And I've always experienced wonderful service there (I've been on Oahu, Newport Beach, and Baltimore, and the quality has been pretty consistent).  My husband likes it more than I do, though -- he is a big fan of the shortribs.
  • if I remember correctly, it's very similar to duke's (even owned by the same group?).

  • Not a fan of Roys. I do love the Animal, though we spent more than $35pp there

    Me, too Embarrassed

  • Hubs is Hawaiian and he loves it.

    I also enjoyed it!

Ok, ok, but, really, you can do better than Roy's.  I don't know anything about Smitty's, but I'm sure it's better and less chain-y than Roy's.

How about Green Street Tavern?  Have you guys been there before?

    Bistro 45?
    Madeleine's?
    Maison Akira?
    Vertical Wine Bistro?

Or why not Arroyo Chop House or Parkway Grill like you mentioned?

  • we've done green street, bistro 45, and maison akira.

to put it bluntly, i'm eyeing roy's because it's the most reasonably priced. ?and i like the hawaiian vibe - anything hawaiian always takes us back to fun memories.

    smitty's is still a consideration, though. ?

thanks for your feedback and ideas - i now have a great running list of places to hit up for future special occasions!?

  • Good luck.

If you're deciding between Roy's and Fleming's, go with Roy's.

  • Sorry.  I can't help myself.

    Two more suggestions:
    Babita (Birthday #1, Birthday #2)
    Dal Rae

  • i feel like such a butthole, but we've done dal rae and i want to save babita for when his folks come with us (they LOVE mexican food).

but i have time! ?if you think of more, keep 'em coming!?

  • But I am on the right track, right?
At least I am in the correct vicinity now....
  • And how was Dal Rae?

I'm hoping to take a long lunch there one of these days....

    I would agree with this.

Now I want to go to Roy's again.

dal rae was really, really good. ?it's been a while, but i remember enjoying every bite from appetizer to dessert. ?it's got a cool, old-school kinda vibe. ?highly recommended!

  • Excellent.

I can't remember if your husband likes sushi or not, but there's Hayakawa.  It's not the prettiest restaurant or location, but the food is damn good.

  • he LOVES sushi. ?funny, he digs all the real sushi, unlike me, who sticks to cooked rolls. ?heh.?

  • Apparently, lurkers are very interested in Roy's.

No, it's just me.  I'm sitting here refreshing and refreshing the nest until a new message comes up and I go read it.  I didn't have anything to add to the convo but I wanted to read anyway.

    :-/

  • wait, is THAT how the "views" are counted? ?

  • What do you mean?
If someone views a thread, that is a view.
How else would it be counted?

Refreshing The Nest doesn't contribute to a view count.
Viewing the thread adds to the view count.
    It's called "views."
