Name brand or generic BCP

Ladies, I went to pick up my birth control pills last night, and they gave me the generic version.  I have never taken generic BCP, are they really the same?  Not sure why I am ok with the generic version of other medicines, but not that one... what do you think?

Sorry if TMI... :)

Re: Name brand or generic BCP

  • IMO, if it is cheaper, and doesn't cause a reaction, I'm all for it.

  • If it's cheaper and you've never been on that brand before, you should be fine.  Just keep an eye on any symptoms you may develop and if it doesn't clear up then you can give the brand name a try.  From what I understand, it's easier to switch up from the generic to the brand rather than doing it the other way around.  I am actually doing that right now.

I switched BCPs in June.  I'm giving my body some time to adjust and if that doesn't happen I'm going to try the brand and see how it goes.  If that doesn't work I will be trying another pill.

  • thank you ladies, I know...it's only $10 and the name brand is $35 - $25 savings every month adds  up! :)

According to the pharmacist, it's the same thing... so I am giving it a try.

  • It depends on your body. I was switched to a generic and I was fine, but then walgreens switched the generic brand and it was awful. I am now getting the original generic at costco. The way generics work is they have the same active ingredients but different inactives.
  • I'd go for it. If you have a strange reaction, you can always go back to the name brand or try a different generic. The generic shouldn't be any less effective than the brand name, if that's a concern.
