Most husbands would be pestering their wives for a ginormous flatscreen, but not in my household. I tell my H that I would be so much more into sports games if I could actually see the ball. And whenever we're at a friends' house (who ALL have flatscreens) I say, "Look how vivid and big that picture is! Isn't that nice, honey??!"
He still maintains there's nothing wrong with our 27" tube set. And really, there isn't. But we could move the 27" into the bedroom where we now have an itty bitty 13". But it would also mean buying a new TV stand to replace our armoire and before you know it, a grand is out the window.
Sometimes I dislike having such a "frugal" hubs.
Any other tactic I could try? Who else is living in the Stone Age like I am?
Re: How to convince DH we need a flatscreen?
I'm with you...luckily I had already acquired my 60" flat screen before I started dating H. Prior to that, I had a 27" tube, and it was awful...as soon as I moved into my house, I knew a 27" wasn't going to work for my living room and I bought my 60 incher from Best Buy with 36 months interest free. Sooooo worth it! H had a 32" tube before we met...needless to say, he was happy I already had a nice TV.
TV prices have come down significantly since I plopped down my big chunk o' change for my TV. I'd say keep an eye on Best Buy flyers and when they are offering a big interest-free deal, try to bait him with that. Three years is a ridiculously long period of time to pay for a TV. Also check out Costco and Sams Club...they always have great deals too.
What guy doesn't want a bigger/better TV?
Explain the high quality picture of porn....
We actually just got a 32" flat screen for our bedroom and love it. It's from Best Buy and the brand is Insignia. M works for Best Buy and he said that Insignia is rated pretty good for a cheaper tv. He also mentioned something about LG making them.
Wow.
My hubs loves all things electronics. If he could have planned our wedding, it would have been at best buy.
We (he) recently purchased a new 60' Plasma; and his way of thinking, well now that we have this nice plasma, we need a new tv stand (there was nothing wrong with the one we had), oh, well now we have room for the surround sound speakers. (so, it's TV, Cable Box, Receiver Box, PS3, Wii, and 5 speakers...looks horrible/crowded). And of course he wants me to buy the 12inch subwoofer (not the 10 inch, thats just lame), must be the 12 inch, that we have no place to put it.
You guys need to upgrade!
We have a 56" flatscreen in the living room which Paul bought right when we moved into our apt. without consulting me first. I was so pissed that he bought it until baseball started and then I agreed it was worth every penny.
We have a 48" plasma in our bedroom which is also pretty sweet. That is a new addition to our place.

I can't relate either. DH and I used to live 3 hours apart when we were dating and when we moved into our apartment I seriously think he was more excited to get the big flat screen he always wanted than he was to be living with me.
We have a 46" that he bought with a store credit card for the 3 years no interest and pays off about $100 a month, even though the min. payment is only about $35. He loves it, and so does every one else that watches it. I've heard that Walmart has pretty good prices on flat screen tv's but that they don't have as big of a selection as a place like Best Buy does.
definitely can't relate. FIRST thing Kev did when we got back from the honeymoon was start TV shopping. We ended up getting a 40" Samsung HD Flat Screen from Best Buy,
and it really does work! i can actually watching sports with K now!!
Tell Mr. W that his nephew doesn't like smaller, bulkier tv's and won't come visit until the situation is remedied.
(BTW, I know that sentence includes a UA, but "tvs" just bothers me!)
Just what I thought. We're freaks!! It's not even about "keeping up with the Joneses" at this point. I just really want one. I'm a TV freak, and though ours does the job, it's not a big pretty flatscreen! I'm apparently the dude in the relationship. H isn't into electronics and toys.
Shag, I wish that idea would work!

C, so true. I could tell him that Chaz will shun anyone with a tube tv. (You're forgiven for the UA -- it's because the abbreviation is lowercase.)

So I have a couple of ideas for you....first is that Thanksgiving is 3 weeks from Thursday which means that the BIGGEST shopping day of the year is 3 weeks from Friday. Yes...it's a pita to hit the crowds but the deals are usually insane for big electronics...especially if you go early.
Also - look into the VIZIO brand (which is sold pretty much everywhere now). This is the kind we have - very inexpensive but a great TV...you're not paying for the "name" brand. I think they're made by either LG or Panasonic.
Or...what about a Christmas gift?
Or tell him if you get one you'll do all sorts of extra things for him (naughty or nice)!
GL Mames, I'm pulling for you!
Oh man. We used to have a 20" tube TV in our living room. It was awful. My husband had to sit right in front of the TV on the floor to watch sports, it was kind of sad. We had the same situation in our bedroom, so that wasn't any better.
My husband's friends felt bad for us I guess, and he had mentioned wanting a TV, so one of his college friends got all of his college and med school friends together, and they bought us a 47" HD flat screen Insignia TV. It's seriously a whole new world of TV watching. We can actually see what's going on, not just in sporting events, but in other TV shows! It's incredible. One of his friends delivered it and set it up while we were on our honeymoon, and here's a picture of its discovery (I think I've posted this before) - you can see how happy it made him:
We had to get a new TV stand to accommodate it, but clearly it was worth it. We found a nice and cheap one at Target (which Mames, I'm sure you'd appreciate!).
I am typing this before reading everyone elses, but. . . how about peer pressure.
"Everyone else is doing it!"

Ooh, CT even brings a pic to the thread!! (and I love that my Target obsession is so wideknown on J9!) I was thinking of 42" -- Do you think that will be big enough? I'm already looking at Black Friday ads, though I'd rather shop from the comfort of my house.
kaley, I don't think peer pressure will do it. He's more envious of our friends' doggies than their TVs.
He will admit flatscreens are nice, and I did suggest it as a joint Christmas gift, but he's not budging yet.

Aww, thanks. But don't go out of your way! So you don't find yourself thinking after a few months, "Ugh, wish it was bigger!"?
Lucy Elizabeth 10.27.12
not about the tv, no.
?
LOL! That was a total joke btw! Couldn't resist.
No, we've had our measly 42-inch since 2006 and it's always been a good size for us. I think we may upgrade this year though but that's because some weirdness is happening with the speakers, not because we just have to have a bigger screen.
Hahahaha...and I absolutely love Target, I had no idea how incredible it was until I started living on my own and actually had to pay for my own stuff, and I realized that it is pretty much the best store for EVERYTHING.
I definitely think 42" would be big enough! In my opinion, that's a huge TV. That's a great idea to look into Black Friday deals - from what I've heard, the prices of nice TVs are slashed ridiculous amounts.
I hope you are still looking at this post; I want to throw in that energy efficiency is a big deal in TVs these days. In California in the next year or two they are going to set new, strict standards on the amount of energy a TV can take up, especially when it is plugged in but not on--it is still draining a ton. Vizio is one of the only brands out there right now that already meets the proposed stricter energy standards. Thereby, by buying a new TV (if it's Vizio) you are doing something better for the environment.
We were thinking of getting one on Black Friday.

Oh angel, you're naughty!!
Lark - I was looking at a 42" Vizio at Walmart.com that's $650 and it got decent reviews. I may try to negotiate with DH somehow! Cross your fingers!

We have this TV!
We actually bought a 42" Polaroid last year on Black Friday and it was a POS. We didn't hook it up right away because we were moving, but we stored it according to the instructions. When we hooked it up 3 or 4 weeks later, it wouldn't work! So we had to return it. We ended up paying about $100 more, but we got the Vizio and we love it! It is the perfect size, IMO.
The Vizio is great quality, and from what I have heard is a great brand for flat screens.

I really, really can't relate...because we have a 60" flatscreen in the living room, and a 32" flatscreen in the bedroom.
Does he play videogames? Watch movies? Because those def. are much higher quality/easier to watch/play on a big screen.
Tell him a bunch of girls are making fun of him for his teeny tiny tv. If peer pressure doesn't work, demasulating him might
(Just kidding, you know I love W).
