Curiosity Poll

So this was asked on the married "DW" board a few weeks ago. I was really surprised by the answers and so I'm curious...

  1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day?
  2. If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it?
  3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost?
  4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured?
  5. Did you have your rings soldered together?

Re: Curiosity Poll

  • # Do you wear your engagement ring every day?

Yep, unless I'm bumming around at home and cleaning

    # Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost?

    Yep.

    # Is your e-ring/wedding band insured?

     Nope.

    # Did you have your rings soldered together?

Nope. I like the freedom of wearing either if I want, plus my rings look better when they separate from themselves a little.

    1. Yes.
    2. n/a
    3. Yes, I was there when both were purchased.
    4. Yes, on our renter's insurance.
    5. No. The wedding band was custom molded to fit against my e-ring and I don't have any trouble with them moving since they fit so well together.

    1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day?  Yes, I do.
    2. If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it?  N/a
    3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? I know for sure how much the band was because I picked it out. I know how much my e-ring was appraised for because DH left the docs out and I couldn't resist looking.
    4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured?  Yes, DH insured the e-ring before he proposed (good boy!)
    5. Did you have your rings soldered together? No, my e-ring has a cathedral setting, which makes it sit high and I don't sleep with it on because DH fears I will gouge his eye out in my sleep, plus I don't like to wear it when holding babies.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

    1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day? yes
    2. If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it? all occassions.. and I make sure to clean my rings whenever I go to weddings or see my SIL or other special occassions so I have the prettiest ring around Angel... but nobody knows I do that
    3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? yes, but DH doesn't know I know. I didn't want to know at first because I thought it was more romantic that way, but I take care of the insurance so I have to know
    4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured?  yes, it gives me a piece of mind
    5. Did you have your rings soldered together? No, they don't move around that much, and sometimes when I have a fat finger day they're hard to get off together so I don't see the need.
    1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day? yes and my wedding band.
    2. If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it? n/a. Only time i didn't wear it is scuba diving/going in the ocean. I also took it off once when I went into a bad area and just wore my band
    3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? yes, it was insured through my insurance so i had to know to call and insure it.
    4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured? Engagement ring is, wedding bands aren't yet (i need to do this!)
    5. Did you have your rings soldered together? no, i like the freedom to just wear it in different ways (i have a bridal set so i prefer to be able to wear any combo of the three as i want)
  • Do you wear your engagement ring every day?  Yep - without fail.  I only take it off to shower, so it doesn't get all gunky with soap.

If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it? N/A - always wear it

Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? Yep, he told me after the fact when we were having a conversation about when he got it and how he surprised me

Is your e-ring/wedding band insured?  Yes

Did you have your rings soldered together? Nope, I like the option of wearing them separately (even if I never do)...never have worn them separately yet!  Also, my e-ring and wedding band were purchased at two different locations, so I think their damage policies may null and void each other if I had them soldered together

  • 1. No.  See answer to #2.

    2. I don't wear my rings when I'm doing something that could gunk them up or damage them.  This means half the time that I'm at work they aren't on, and often when I'm at home I'm sans ring.  I also take it off if I'm showering or sleeping.  FWIW, DH can't wear his at work either...safety hazzard.

    3. Yes

    4. You betcha.  I'm brutal on jewelry and have lost jewelry before, so insurance was a must.

    5. No.

    1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day? yes e-ring and wedding band at all times
    2. If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it? n/a
    3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? yeah, I was there when he bought the wedding band, I found out about the e-ring during the insurance process since we put it on our homeowners policy.
    4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured? yep both of them were insured from pretty much the day we bought them.  My grandma actually had her rings stolen and weren't insured so I learned that lesson.  Another reason not to take them off too.
    5. Did you have your rings soldered together? no, I thought about it but haven't done it.  Although they spin differently sometimes, it doesnt really bug me, and I like the flexibility of being able to wear them separately even though I dont.  I also dont want to do anything to them before I have kids as my hands may change when I'm pregnant.
  • I should probably answer my own questions.

    1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day?  No. And now I officially feel weird about this.

    2. If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it?  I only wear it on special occasions - weddings, benefits, fancy dinners etc.

    3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost?  I know the appraised values because I had to sign the insurance paperwork. But I have no idea what he actually paid for either ring.

    4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured?  Yes and I didn't wear my e-ring out until it was. Most of our friends didn't see it for a few weeks because I was so paranoid haha.

    5. Did ou have your rings soldered together?  No. I was never able to find a band that fit with my e-ring that I didn't hate, so I ended up just choosing a band that I loved and stopped stressing about it. When I wear my e-ring, I wear it on my right hand, old school style.

    1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day? Yes, although I took it off last week for the whole week because the area around my finger was getting really dry. I moisturized like hell for a week and now it's fine again.
    2. If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it?
    3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? Yes, but only because I saw the receipt / appraisal
    4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured? Yes (it actually amazes me how few people on here have their ring insured.)
    5. Did you have your rings soldered together? Nope. I have 2 bands and an e-ring. If they were soldered together I wouldn't be able to get them on my finger.
  • Is your e-ring/wedding band insured? Yes (it actually amazes me how few people on here have their ring insured.)

This is one of the reasons I asked. I was shocked by how many girls said 'no' when I answered this question on the other board a few weeks ago. Now I'm a bit less surprised that so many people know the cost. I guess it is just becoming common knowledge.

But I'm still the weirdo about wearing the e-ring. Oh well.

  • I know a lot of peeps that don't wear theirs all the time. I guess part of me thinks, "hey, it's insured, if I mess it up or lose it, I get a brand new ring." So I don't really care if I have it on when it could potentially be damaged or not.
  • imageChooGirl:

So this was asked on the married "DW" board a few weeks ago. I was really surprised by the answers and so I'm curious...

    1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day? Yup unless I forget. I don't work out in it and I don't wear it when we travel out of the country.
    2. If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it?
    3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? Only b/c of insurance purposes
    4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured?  Yup we did it right away...I was afraid something would happen.
    5. Did you have your rings soldered together? No- I wanted a plain white gold band so I could go sans e-ring whenever I wanted.

Yeah, thats probably a much healthier way to think about it. I've just had a run of bad luck with mine (lets just say it got stuck on my little sisters finger when she was playing with it and it had to be cut off by the fire department - oy), which is probably part of the reason why I hesistate to wear it. That, and living in NYC = public transportation. So I feel justified, but people question me all.the.time. I never thought it was weird, but apparently some people think its weird.

    1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day? Mostly.
    2. If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it? I really don't ever wear it when I am home due to cleaning or whatever. I never wear it to the gym. It has a knife edge, so if I was lifting weights (metal to metal) it would wear down much faster than normal rings. It already has worn down some. Since I am home most of the time (student-don't work), I will go days without wearing it. DH is lazy about wearing his too.
    3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? Only how much it was appraised for.
    4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured? Of course.
    5. Did you have your rings soldered together? I picked my ring because I liked that it didn't need a band with it. I don't like the look of asymmetry and 2 bands would have been too gaudy (my ring has a lot of detail on it). One ring=no soldering.
  • 1. Yes

    2.  I only take my rings off when I shower and when I cook messy things such as meatballs!

    3. Yes

    4. Yes

    5. Not yet...still haven't decided on this one.  I should as they'd look better if they stayed lined up and I know it's better for them, but still not sure.

    1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day? No.  I stopped wearing it after I got the "real" ring.
    2. If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it? I never wear it.  It's in a drawer.
    3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? E-ring about $150, I think.  Wedding band probably about the same.
    4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured?  No.
    5. Did you have your rings soldered together? No.

I feel that this requires some explaining.  I don't really like diamonds.  I think they are cliche and showy and demanded in large sizes by the sort of princessy beebee bride I never ever want to be.  No offense to you who have them, or flame me if you'd like, but I think spending that much money on a ring which can easily be lost or broken is ridiculous and demanding a certain size is just trying to show off to others how much you can get your man to pay for you.  Materialistic.  I also have issues with how they are mined.

So my engagement ring, bought off e-bay, was a cloudy, dark blue sapphire.  Not worth a lot monetarily, but pretty and my birthstone.  I went into the deal knowing I would not want to wear it any more once I got my wedding band, which is a simple gold band (though it is milgrain, so not just totally plain).

    1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day? Yes
    2. If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it? I only take my rings off to clean them and when I'm using lotion
    3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? My e-ring is a secret. I know how much it's insured for, but my H got the center stone from my grandmother's engagement ring. I don't want to know how much it cost him to get the ring re-set and to put a diamond on either side of it. I know how much my wedding band cost since we bought our rings together.
    4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured? Just my e-ring
    5. Did you have your rings soldered together? Nope, I kinda like the clicky sound they make when they bump together :)

No flaming here!!  I think your story is pretty awesome actually and I agree with a lot of what you are saying!  Hence why I told my guy that I didn't need a ring, and if he wanted to get me one it better not be big!  He did a great job and I am in love with my set, but was completely surprised.  (His friends are all jealous that I told him to get me something small!)  Had I known about how diamonds were mined before we got engaged, I would have completely refused a diamond or said that it had to be conflict free.

Smile  DH's best friend M got marred a couple of years before we did.  M bought his fiance a small-medium sized ring, but of the clearest, purest diamond you can imagine so it was ridiculously expensive.  Now is the time to explain that M worked full time at Border's, and M's fiance was a full time student.  No way could they afford that payment, but that was the ring she wanted so that is what he got her.  DH used to say that he wasn't ready to propose to me because he couldn't afford a ring.  I reminded him that he couldn't afford her ring.  He could afford mine just fine.

      1. I never fully buy when people say they don't like diamonds and blah blah blah.  The people I know personally that say this is b/c they know they can't afford a diamond (there is nothingn wrong with that at all) so they just say they don't like them when if fact they do.

        1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day? Only when I leave the house.
        2. If you don't wear it every day,?on what occasions?do you/don't you wear it? I don't wear it at home, or any jewelry for that matter. I also rarely wear a bra and am usually in sweats (at home). I am all about comfort!
        3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? Yes
        4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured? Yes
        5. Did you have your rings soldered together? No. mine is stacked--two bands on either side of the e-ring. I like the versatility of that.

I totally get it. I actually wish mine was simpler and less diamond-y! (Please don't tell my H!) My tastes have just changed with age. I don't need all the bling that I thought I did when I was in my 20s.

My mom's e-ring is a ruby, she is anti-diamond too, so this is not a foreign concept to me. I high five you Lark!?
