Anyone from Abilene?

My DH is in the AF and we just found out we're moving to Abilene, from Germany.  I'm from Texas, but not that area, so I know VERY little about it.  Can anyone help me out with the best areas to live, schools, etc?  Thanks a ton!!

Re: Anyone from Abilene?

  • My husband was born and raised.  :-)  We're actually going to Abilene for Thanksgiving.  There's another girl on here (Happy.As.Just.Kim) whose husband was stationed in Abilene in the AF.  What age are your kids?  A lot of the military children all go to the same schools.  The better schools (like a lot of bigger cities) are in the outlying areas.  But then the commute for your husband would be a lot further too.

  • Thanks!  My son is 2.5 now, but will be in Kindergarten while we're there.

  • Hey there-We just moved from Abilene in March, to Japan. My hubby is AF as well. What does your DH do? Are you guys at Ramstein now? We are in Yokota. Anyway, my DH and I are both from TX, although not Abilene. He was stationed there before we got married, and owned a house in the Wylie area. Abilene has Abilene ISD, and a very small district on the south side of town (I think it is the south), called Wylie. It has a much better reputation than Abilene ISD does, although I subbed in Abilene and found it to be just fine I thought. Our old house was just down the street from Wylie HS. From the short time I was there, I thought the south side of town seemed to be a bit more on the up and up side, and the north side of town was a bit sketchy, but of course there are good and bad parts to each. Do you guys have a realtor? I have the name of a good one who helped us sell our house if you need it.  Hope that info helped a little bit. You can email me if you have more questions and I'll try and help you out. kimcochran08 at yahoo.com

  • Oh, I meant to add that if you live on base the kids go to Dyess Elem (Abilene ISD). We lived off base, like I said, but base was only about 10-15 min away (close enough that the windows in the house shook a bit when the B-1's did engine tests :)
