Curiosity Poll

Re: Curiosity Poll

    1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day? Nope. My husband proposed with a white gold band in Europe and my "engagement ring" was my great-grandmother's wedding ring. I got over my love of the engagement ring and ended up wearing the gold band mostly.
    2. If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it? I gave the engagement ring back to my Mom to put in the safe, so never. The gold band is worn to the gym and on vacation, so I don't lose/scratch the wedding ring.
    3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? Yes. I saw the receipt for the gold band and we bought the wedding rings together.
    4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured? Neither of them are insured because it's not worth enough money to worry about. Seriously.
    5. Did you have your rings soldered together? No.

I never fully buy when people say they don't like diamonds and blah blah blah.  The people I know personally that say this is b/c they know they can't afford a diamond (there is nothingn wrong with that at all) so they just say they don't like them when if fact they do.

Oh I do love diamonds, I just don't feel it necessary for a big one as 1. I'm not materialistic 2. I'm small and 3. I work in the medical field and am very active outdoors so it would just be a pain in the a**.  But I also don't like how they are mined and feel that a lot of unnecessary crap goes on in the diamond industry.  I completely get what you're saying though Mofe as I've heard this from a lot of people but you can usually tell when it is genuine and when it is just said to gain attention!!

  • Do you wear your engagement ring every day? Yes, mostly.  If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it? Sometimes, when we go somewhere I'm not sure of, I leave it at home. It's somewhat conspicous. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? Yes Is your e-ring/wedding band insured?  OH Yeah. My E-ring has it's own policy, lol. Did you have your rings soldered together? Nope, they're not a set, plus I like that I can wear my wedding band by itself.

  • I wear my e-ring almost all the time.

I take it off when scuba diving and swimming (usually).

I know how much everything cost. I think it's weird not to know when it's the first major purchase of our life together.

Ring was insured before I got it. C knows me too well not to have insured it first.

    No soldering.

Lark - I agree with you on most counts. I do love jewelery and I do love diamonds, but I also think that the cost gets insane and that the mining process is awful and that people lose all perspective on it. C also put off proposing so he could afford a ring. I finally asked him how much he thought it would cost and was horrified by what he thought was normal. I told him that I would never wear something that cost so much and gave him a limit to how much he could spend and asked for a conflict free diamond. (I don't think the conflict free diamonds really solve the problem, but it's a step closer.)

On the other hand, I have a friend whose now fiance didn't want to get her an expensive ring so he looked on Amazon for amethyst rings because, to quote him directly, "it's purple and it's cheap". If he had said, "I know you love purple and it's a bit more budget-friendly" it would have made a world of difference to me.

    1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day?  I dont ever take it off, unless it's being cleaned
    2. If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it? n/a
    3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? Yes, I knew the price range when went went and looked at rings about 6 months before we got engaged, then he told me how much it was after we got engaged, and we bought the wedding band together
    4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured?  the engagement ring is, we still havent turned in the papers for the wedding band... were a little behind...maybe next week!
    5. Did you have your rings soldered together? nope, there might be times in my profession that i dont need to have my engagement ring on, but i would still like to be able to wear my wedding band so i didnt have it done.

Yeah, I wasn't going to drag it out but I do believe that even conflict-free diamond perpetuate the desirability of diamonds, and the vast majority of people out there do not care about ethical and environmentally-sound mining practices.  By choosing a sapphire (still mined, but non-traditional) I hope that it encourages others to seek other alternatives.  Though that is sort of moot because I no longer wear it.  By wearing just a plain gold band, I hope it tells others that I am not a fussy or materialistic person and I won't put up with others' self-aggrandizing b.s.  I could have a giganto rock, but I choose to demonstrate my values and not my salary.

    1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day? Yes.
    2. If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it? I only take it off to play softball (wear the band only as my ring gets caught in my glove) and to clean it. Oh and DH prefers me to take it off to go in the ocean so we leave it in a room safe or something when doing that.
    3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? E-ring- NO. Wedding band- YES.
    4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured? Yes, with a rider on our renter's insurance
    5. Did you have your rings soldered together? No.

I also do not have a diamond engagement ring, but it is not because we are poor or cheap or anything like that. I do love diamonds, and have diamond stud earrings (and want an upgrade on them!), but I wanted something more unique for my engagement ring and DH totally agreed. My ring was custom designed and has diamonds in the band, but the center stone is a 2.5 ct. blue topaz.

    1. Do you wear your engagement ring every day? Yes. If my wedding band is on my finger, my engagement ring is too. I take them off to shower and to clean so that they don't get gunky, and also when I go to the gym so that I don't destroy them, but otherwise I wear my rings all the time.
    2. If you don't wear it every day, on what occasions do you/don't you wear it? N/A
    3. Do you know how much your e-ring/wedding band cost? Yes. I picked out both rings so I know the exact price. Also, since our money has always been household money, we discussed what we could afford to spend before we went shopping ...and then I went slightly over. Wink
    4. Is your e-ring/wedding band insured? Yes, absolutely. They were too big of an investment to risk damaging/losing and be out all that money.
    5. Did you have your rings soldered together? Yes. My rings are very thin (2.5mm wide) and have diamonds all the way around (AW: 352 diamonds total!) aside for a small section underneath that allows them to be sized. I tried them on together a few times for a couple of hours each pre-wedding to see how they'd do. The band would separate from the e-ring and would also turn over exposing the plain section underneath. It just didn't look right, so I soldered them before the wedding. Now they're perfect!
