Green bean casserole question

I want to make a green bean casserole for thanksgiving, but the only chance I have to prepare it is tonight. Do you think if I made the mixture and left it in my fridge that it would be okay to bake on Thursday?

The mixture is, cream of mushroom soup, milk, greenbeans, and french's onions.

Re: Green bean casserole question

  • I wouldn't put the french's onions in it yet, but the other stuff should be fine.

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

    My thoughts exactly.

  • Honestly, I wouldn't do anything until Thursday. Aside from the sogginess of the onions, your green beans might get waterlogged too if you prepare it too early. Green bean casserole takes literally 5 minutes to throw together. Even if you have to get out of bed 5 minutes earlier, I think it's worth it to wait.

    Chrissy out.

  • What Chrissy says is true as well (I don't  know about the water-logged beans, I think that might depend on what kind you use-frozen, fresh, canned). It really does only take minutes. Last week, I mixed it up at work when I got in for our potluck. No tiime at all.  (BTW, you can totally make it in a crock pot!)

  • I would wait and do it Thursday as well... If you are using fresh beans, you can prep and blanch them tonight but I wouldnt put everything together until Thursday morning.
  • GROSSS. I ABHOR green bean casserole. Speaking of which, I figured out why my office smelled like it. I had lentil soup last week, and forgot to clean out the bowl and bring it home. There were a few lentils stuck to the bottom of the bowl. Moldy lentil = green bean casserole.
  • Everyone else gave such good advice, there's really nothing I can say.

And Dandy, I challenge you to hate my green bean casserole.  It's fresh green beans, fresh mushrooms (button, crimini and shiitake) and white cheddar.  It is seriously good.

  • omg D, I can't believe you were the GBC culprit. (I've coined that acronym for green bean casserole. YW.)

Consider yourself my enemy for reasons you probably already know. :)
