35mm photography anyone?

I inherited my Grandpa's ollld Canon camera when Grams passed away. I don't know ANYTHING about the different types of 35mm film... I know it's got different speeds, but I don't know how to decide which one to get. I know I can probably google it, but I thought I would see if any of you can offer me some advice who have experience with it. It's embarrassing that I don't know anything about the thing, my dad's going to have to teach me how to load the film into it! The first camera I owned was the advantix (I think that's what it was called) kind where you just dropped the film in the camera and it loaded and unloaded itself. Surprise
