VENT: bad parents

I had a big long interview with the Children's Aid Society yesterday as well as the police re: one of my students who told me that "her parents used to beat her with anything they had on hand". She told the entire class this in the context of sharing a poem called The Whipping.

SWEET JESUS. How do parents get to this point? Seriously!

Re: VENT: bad parents

  • Yikes.  What going to happen next?  What a sad, scary thing for this student and for you to go through...  DH is a teacher and so far, he hasn't had any suspicions of his students being abused, and none have said anything but who knows what's going on at home.
  • OMG. This is so awful! It's a terrible situation, but I'm glad that at least you're there to help.
  • OMG.  It's sad.  I had students reveal all sorts of things to me like that.  I was teaching them one-on-one (private voice lessons) so I am sure they felt it was safe.  But it was always a dilemma for me how to handle it.

I saw "The Blind Side" last night and it just made me so sad for the milllions of kids out there born to parents who never wanted them in the first place.  How does this happen?  I swear!  You need more training to drive a car than to have a kid.   It's just wrong.

  • Part of our code of ethics is that we have a duty to report. I mean, you HAVE to really. You're not their friend; you're responsible for their well being.

  • I volunteer for CASA (not sure if you have CASA where you live), but I tell you what.....my dislike for society greatly increased once I had to be up close and personal with abused children.  I will tell you though, that great teachers like you so often are the ones that save the day.  One of my cases right now was inniated by a teacher and I am so thankful for her!  She is an angel, and so are you.....
