Re: Tai quote clicky poll
CHER Tai, how old are you?
TAI I'll be sixteen in May.
My birthday is in April, and as someone older, can I please give you some advice? (Tai nods) It is one thing to spark up a doobie and get laced at parties, but it is quite another to be fried all day.
DIONNE Do you see the distinction?
TAI Yeah.
CHER Loadies generally hang on the grassy knoll over there. "unknown song and artist" guitarish They come to class and say bonehead things, and we all laugh, of course. But no respectable girl actually dates them.
DIONNE Hmm-mm.
CHER You don't want to start off on the wrong foot, do you????????????? I've got an idea. Let's do a make-over! (Dionne lights up)
TAI No, no.
DIONNE Oh, c'mon! Let us! Cher's main thrill in life is a make- over. OK, it gives her a sense of control on a world full of chaos.
CHER Pleeeaaase.
TAI Sure. Why not? Shiit! You guys! I have never had straight friends before.

This was also immediately following the "No way, you guys got coke here?" (referring, as stated previously, to Tai thinking Cocaine and Cher thinking CocaCola). I think it's "non-drug-using friends."

This is such a lawyer way to debate your side.
And might I add, it does not say RSVP on the Statue of Liberty!

touche. Please use that in court one day.
That would truly be my crowning achievement as a lawyer, I kid you not.

My 2 cents-
Cher smokes @ a party, not 100% straight edge.
Tai, says the quote, only after the two girls suggest a makeover.
Not drug related.
Explain Cher's guilty look!!!!
Also, if you use that line in a courtroom someday I will divorce my H and marry you.

I'm pretty sure Cher doesn't look guilty, she just looks confused/weirded out by Tai's admission...unless the guilt is coming from what Philly points out, which is that she smokes at the party so she knows she's not "straight" even though at that moment in the film, Tai thinks she is.
Maybe Tai really is a closet lesbian. We're all wrong.
Exactly, philly!

The hug plus the overalls could have led Cher to think that's what Tai meant and cause the confused look. Just saying.

This debate has me even more convinced it's straight=real/legit friends.
She says it excitedly/happily. Why would she be thrilled that her new friends aren't druggies?Maybe intrigued... not happy.
She says it immediately following the makeover suggestion.
Cher's guilty look that she and Dionne are not being "real" about their intentions for hanging out with Tai.
Lucy Elizabeth 10.27.12
But you have to take the entire context into question, not just the last statement. And I think she's excited about clean friends because they like to do things (like makeovers) unlike her stoner friends who probably did nothing.
And I still maintain Cher does not look guilty.

Switzerland says it's all 3.
I believe, in explicit context, and in reference to prior quotes, that Tai is not only excited about having "true friends" (she did seem like a big fat loser pants before Cher and friends), she is also is dire need of a makeover (I mean, did you see those big flannel shirts? Obvi her only friends prior to Cher and the like were manly women who probably liked other manly women. With mustaches.) Also, given her pure excitement at being at the posh Beverly Hills High School, I believe that her experience at prior secondary schools, she was most likely thrust into the drug scene, thus Cher and friends were the first ones who were "straight-edged".
I'll disregard the fact that Cher smoked at that party, bc it's detrimental to my case.

Switzerland appreciates the new option, and has now voted appropriately.

I couldn't find an official web site or anything, either.
But if anyone can find contact info, Mames, it's you! (I never thought I'd find someone better at Internet searches than me!)
ETA: There is an Amy Heckerling on FB according to google but I doubt it's her. I can't scope it out, though, while I'm at work.

I just want to thank you all for this thread. What you are debating is essentially the topic of my th*sis (but I'm using much more straightforward stimuli). You have made me feel that my life's work has some relevance to the world. And this thread might be quoted in my discussion.
And it's totally straight = non-druggies. Straight as in real friends is not and was not such common slang that it would be used in the movie (IMHO). Sraight as in not gay had nothing to do with anything about would have been too bizarre for the script. Straight as in not into drugs was the whole point of the conversation. (I do agree that they should have moved the sentence to earlier in the conversation though. Maybe she said it then because she liked that non-druggies spend their time giving makeovers instead of getting high.)

Can it be a mix of non-druggie/real friends? I could get down with that.
Also, I just messaged Amy Heckerling. If she writes back with an answer, I'm going to poop myself.

Here's a brief synopsis so I don't bore you too much:
In my th*sis, I'm looking at the brainwaves related to when you see something that doesn't match what you hear. Right now, I'm looking at phrases like mathematical equations: (1 + 2) x 3 is not the same as 1 + (2 x 3). Ultimately and ideally, the point is to be able to see what the brain does (and in what part of the brain it happens) when you see something (e.g., Cher's expression) and hear something that doesn't quite match (e.g., Tai's comment). I doubt being able to do that will actually happen in my lifetime - but that's the goal anyway.
In other research I'm doing, we're looking at what happens when you hear something that could mean different things (e.g., 'straight') and how the context you hear it in influences how you understand it.
[I wonder if I can copy and paste this into my introduction section? hmmm....]
