Pet (cat) people - I have a ?
So we adopted a kitten 2 weeks ago and DH noticed the other day a patch of fur was missing on the kitty's ear. I looked inside the ear and it's really dirty and there's a couple red spots. Well today I noticed there a few spots of fur missing on the kitty's legs as well. One one leg, it looks like there's a big scab and the skin is white and flaky and lifting away (with the fur) from the leg. What the hell is going on? Anyone have a clue? We have a vet appointment tomorrow, but when I called and made the appointment yesterday I only told them about the spot on the ear because that's all I saw. Now it seems to be spreading and I'm wondering if I need to call and see if we can get squeezed in today.
Re: Pet (cat) people - I have a ?
With our kitten she had a case of ear mites and it looked like dirt and just kept getting worse. It was a pretty easy fix but I had to clean all of them out = YUCK!
I hope that you get an easy answer to your concerns.
Sounds like the missing hair could indicate ringworm. Dirty ears usually spells earmites in a kitten.
The ear mites are a quick fix, but if you have any other pets in the house, they may have gotten infected with them already too.
Ringworm on the other hand is a bot trickier. Def avoid touching those areas, and make sure your kids & other pets keep away until you have some medication to treat it. Kids are very prone to picking it up.
The vet may use a Woods Lamp to check the areas, and if they glow green, its positive for ringworm. However, even if its not green, it can still be ringworm, so they may want to do a culture - which takes about 10 days. I hope its just a skin infection, or flea allergy; and something that can be treated quickly and affordable!
