So I want to know what "names" you call these people

1.  DH's siblings

2. DH's siblings spouses

3. DH's siblings kids

4. Your siblings spouses

And a bonus question

how do you refer to any special family members to people who don't know them....

Re: IL terminology poll

  • To me everyone is a SIL or BIL that's why I ask. I do not differentiate.

    1. SIL, BIL

    2. SIL, BIL

    3. neice and nephew

    4. n/a yet but I will call them my SIL

    bonus

Whackadoo 1 and 2, Best, okay and worst (SILs). I often refer to my SIL who is also married in as my good SIL.

  • nobody else in our families are shacked up, so I can only address #1.

You mean, beyond their names, but how you introduce them or distinguish them? ?BIL is always BIL, SIL is SIL to others, but to her I sometimes use 'little sister'. ?

Some people at work and I have discussed this recently and if anyone should know it's you all

So I want to know what "names" you call these people

    1.  DH's siblings - DH's brother

    2. DH's siblings spouses - DH's brother's wife

    3. DH's siblings kids - DH's nieces (although I'm trying to get used to saying "MY nieces" but I haven't mastered that yet.)

    4. Your siblings spouses (n/a really. I only have step siblings and I don't really call them anything)

    And a bonus question

how do you refer to any special family members to people who don't know them....

I call all of DH's family something in relation to him to distinguish which family I'm talking about. I don't use 'in-law' really. I don't even call my ILs that I call them Dh's mom and dad. I think because 'in-law' often is associated with a negative and I love DH's family.

  • My DH is an only child (not by choice, OMG, MIL why don't you tell me all about your horrific birth experience again) so most of the list doesn't apply to me.

One of my brothers is married...I go back and forth between brother's wife and SIL.

I call my MIL my 'bonus mom'.  In convo, I usally just refer to them by their names.

  • 1.  DH's siblings- siblings-in-law

    2. DH's siblings spouses- siblings-in-law

    3. DH's siblings kids- my husband's niece/nephew

    4. Your siblings spouses- n/a

ETA: like MissNot2Long, we also call my husband's dad's new wife "so-and-so's wife". In my case, it's "My father-in-law's wife" or "My husband's dad's wife). They married after we did, and we've only met her maybe five times (the first time was at our wedding, the second time was at theirs) so my husband doesn't feel comfortable calling her step-mom since she has never been a mom to him (and that's not anything personal against her, it's just a fact, due to the situation).

  • 1.  DH's siblings: Sister-in-law

    2. DH's siblings spouses: Sister-in-law's husband

    3. DH's siblings kids: Nieces

    4. Your siblings spouses: N/A but would be sister-in-law.

how do you refer to any special family members to people who don't know them....  DH's Dad re-married after DH's Mother's death but nobody refers to her as step-mother. She is "DH's Dad's Wife".

DH's grandpa re-married after DH's Grandma's death, but everybody refers to her as Grandma because most grand-kids are young enough to not have met or do not remember the first grandma (they married over 25 yrs ago)
