How old were you when you started shaving your legs?

Re: Think Back PLEASE!!!

  • at the latest, def freshman year of HS, especially for swimming in the fall.
  • 11. And I felt like I was one of the last ones.
  • about 12 I think? And like Jenni, I felt like I was behind others.
  • I was also 11 I believe.

  • I'm pretty sure I was about 11/12.
  • I'm not sure but I would say around the 11 year age.
  • The first time I did it I was in 3rd grade, but cut myself pretty bad and my mom found out and told me I wasn't old enough.  I think 5th grade was when I re-started with my mom's permission.
  • 5th grade, last in my class, also without my mom's permission

Can I guess where this question came from? Poor Meg! They grow up sooo fast.

  • Renee - You guessed it.  She is turning 10 in April  and going into the 5th grade. She hasn't asked, but I also want her to fit in.  I also did it without my mother's permission in 5th grade in order to fit in because everyone else didn't have hair on their legs.

It seems like the age is getting younger and younger.  There were girls on the cheerleading squad that I coached that had their legs shaved at 7.

  • I think I started in 5th grade, without my mothers permission.  Everyone else was already shaving and picked on me because I wasn't.
  • I started removing the hair from my legs summer before 5th grade.  I was only allowed to use the cream "Neat."  It stunk, but it did the job - I have hairy italian legs Tongue Tied

I didn't actually start shaving until well into Jr. High School only because Neat was so convenient and I only had to do it like once every two weeks.

And Meg, lemme just say one thing...  IF Mya has any hair under her arms, even little stragglers, please teach her how to shave that too (or use Neat)...  I didn't have to until I was in high school, BUT I remember girls in 5th grade getting made fun of if they wore a sleeveless shirt or a t-shirt with too-open arm sleeves because of the little hairies they had in there.   I was embarrassed for them!

I know your pain!  We are Portuguese.  Does that cream work?

  • 11ish I think.  I started competing gymnastics in 5th grade and didn't want the judges to see my hairy Italian legs :)
  • Gosh, maybe 12 or 13.....I was a gymnast & cheerleader, if that's any help for the young age.
  • I was 11 and in 5th grade.  I was also the last one in my class.  I told my mom I was the last one and she taught me how to do it.  Deoderant and shaving my armpits were pretty important also.  There was a kid in our class that was nicknamed Stinky because he also smelled like BO.  I felt so bad for that kid.
  • 12 ish. I had very light hair on my arms and legs when I was younger and my BFF (Italian and shaving for awhile) taught me how and we showed my mom after the fact. My mom didn't mind and was like whatevs.
  • I was 11. Letting me shave my legs was one of my 6th grade graduation presents from my mom.

  • I think I was also around the 11-12 and 5th grade age. I wasn't the last one in my class but I wasn't anywhere near the first few girls who did it. I just did it one day after arguing with my mom because she didn't want me to, she was not happy.  Good luck with Mya!

  • The cream works wonders Meg!  It smells awful, but you get used to it.  For us hairier peeps, ya just gotta leave it on a little longer.  It might burn a little at first, but it's not bad at all, promise.  And no risky razors Smile

  • I was in 5th grade.  I did it myself and then told my mom about it afterwards, and she bought me a razor and taught me how to not cut myself.

My little sister is in 3rd grade and she has shaved her legs (again, without permission) but it's not something that she does regularly.

  • I was 10 and one of the first in my grade.
  • I was 11 and figure skating - so legs were showing year round.

Asked mom, and she gladly helped me Smile

    ?
  • just let her do it, Meg.... Britt's been shaving her legs for dance for the past 3  or so years... Big Smile

I'm mostly Irish but also a good amount of Italian.  I always said the only Italian part that showed up was my hairiness.  That cream never worked for me though...but maybe I tried nair...I can't remember.  Maybe I'll try that neat instead. :)

  • I think I was in 4th grade.
  • I was in 4th or 5th grade.  Without my mom's permission but I don't think she cared either.

This past weekend I saw a woman with her daughter in Target shopping for what she needed.  It was really neat to see her do that.  The girl also looked like she was about 10 or 11.

Is this the same as Nair? I remember using it when I was in Junior high. It worked great for my sister, not as great for me. Maybe I should have left it on longer.

I think I was 11, but I probably should have started sooner. I know at age 9 I already had hairy armpits and I remember getting picked on because I was on a swimming team. My mom refused to teach me how to shave though or acknowledge that I needed to and finally when I was in 6th grade my grandma got fed up with my mother and took me shopping and showed me how to shave. Thank goodness for grandma!

Meg, I applaud you for wanting to prepare Mya. I really wish my mother would have prepared me. Instead she ignored and avoided anything to do with puberty, like if she ignored it, it wouldn't happen. As a result I went through some very awkward years.

  • 6th grade. my older sister showed me how. my mom didn't care. I'm not really hairy at all, but it was still a wanting to fit-in thing.

On that note, though, my mom didn't buy me a bra until 7th grade. Granted, there was NOTHING and I mean NOTHING to put in said bra (hell, there's still barely anything to put in a bra), but I got made fun of all.the.time in 6th grade for not wearing one, it was horrifying...
