Lost my job yesterday

So, I have to get this out, but I may ramble a bit!!!

I have been in HR for the past 17 years (man, that makes me sound old) and have been doing consulting work for the same law firm for 7 years.  A year and a half ago they cut back on the time I was there and I gave up some of my responsibilities and took a 30% cut in pay.  I was finally at the point where I'd recovered from that cut and was keeping my head above water.  Yesterday they told me that March would be my last month consulting for them and they want me to teach the marketing director how to do payroll and benefits administration.

In the interest of keeping this somewhat short, there is just no way to teach someone the laws surrounding what I do in a month, when they also have a full-time job themselves.  I also know that #1 - she has no interest in doing this, and #2 - she is married to one of the Partners of the Firm so I was easier to dispose of.  I am livid.  And scared.

Yes, I am also a hair stylist, but I'm still working on building my clientele and do not make very much money at it after I pay my rent on my station and for my marketing efforts.  Seriously....not not even enough to cover my car payment.  So this HR job was my "big girl" job that paid the bills.  Add to that that I am self-employed, therefore ineligible for unemployment.  I am beside myself upset right now.

Today I have a better attitude (kind of) and am making a plan for moving forward.  On the positive side, this job was a 98 mile commute each way and even though I only did it once a week, I was so ready to be done with it.  Be careful what you wish for!  I will be professional through this transition but not go out of my way.  The director of the Firm says he has not even begun to fight this decision so we'll see if I remain in some consulting capacity, but that still means another pay cut.

Thanks for listening....send any good career vibes my way if you can.  Here's to moving onward and upward in the career that I really want to flourish - apparently now's the time!!!

  • I am so sorry to hear about your job, but I truly believe it all happens for a reason.  You always hear about someone losing their job only to find a much better job down the road.  There is always a silver lining.

Many, many career vibes to you!!!

  • So sorry to hear this Amy!  Mucho job vibes to you.
I'm glad you have hair dressing to keep you going and that you no longer have to commute so far.

Like Vanilla said there is always a "silver lining" so I hope you find it soon!

  • Oh hon, I'm SO sorry! I know you must be feeling pretty stressed about this right now...I hope that you can find that silver lining that pp's mentioned! (((hugs)))
  • My first response was "WHAT!!"  This really upsets me Amy :(  I'm so sorry to hear about this news, ugh....!!  I remember hearing about when they cut back your hours and how upsetting that was and now this... sigh.  As I was reading through I thought about how long the drive is for you and how it wasn't pleasant in the traffic... long commutes are never fun!  I know there will be something better suited for you out there, I know it.  Keep your chin up and like you said, be the professional that you are.  Good things will come your way, I'm definitely rooting for you 110%.  Much love!

  • I am so so so sorry Amy :(  I can't imagine how stressed you are right now.  I think of something like that happening to me everyday right now.  Keep your chin up and know something better will come along later.  Things always happen for a reason, although that may not be comforting right now :(  Sending you huge hugs and positive "big girl" job vibes!

  • I am so sorry and it's such a bummers to have to pass the storch to someone who isn't as capabale or motivated such as yourself.  I'm a nail tech on the side, I call it my hobby, because I don't make near enough of what I would need to in order to survive and pay the bills.  but it is my dream to do it on my own full time 100% out of my home.  I only work in a salon on the weekends and my "big girl" job Mon-Fri.  I work under MH and it is starting to get to the point where I will need to move on as to not to cause conflict for MH.  I am not looking forward to that.  but as PP mentioned things do happen for a reason and something bigger and better will come along :)  take care and career vibes floating your way
  • Oh, I'm so sorry!  As pp said, let's hope this happened for a reason, and the silver lining will show itself soon.  Good luck....we're all pulling for you!

  • Oh, Amy, I'm so sorry to hear this!  It sucks losing a job, and it especially sucks when they basically tell you they think someone else can do it (when you know they can't).  Booooooooo.

But I agree with PP, these things do tend to work out for the best (in my experience, at least).  I'm sure you will find a better job, closer to home, that will be just as good or better.

Sending TONS of good-job vibes your way!

  • :( that's bs! a case of not what you know but who you know...

LOTS OF AWESOME CAREER VIBES COMING YOUR WAY! there is def something better than this job waiting for you :)

  • wow, sorry to hear that.  I hope you find something that is less stressful and closer or that your hairdressing business takes off soon!
  • I am so sorry Amy...my mom has been in HR for over 30 years and is an executive these days (well WAS...) and was also laid off during downsizing...she's since built up her massage clientele...but it's tough...no benefits, etc.

    That said...you can do this!

  • Oh no, I am so sorry that you are going through this right now. I will definitely be thinking of you and hope that you find a better opportunity soon. Try not to stress (even though this is way easier said then done!).

  • Ohhh Amy I am so sorry that you are going through this. They have certainly lost a great employee!

Just remember, as one door closes, another opens :) Stay strong! You are in my thoughts.

Sending loads of good vibes your way

    {hugs}

  • Lots of good career vibes your way, Amy!

I can't believe they want you to teach someone else something YOU were being paid to do.  That's another job in itself and they should pay you separately for that.  But then again, what do I know?

I hope the director is able to fight this or you find something better.

    Good luck to you!

  • Oh no! I'm so sorry. Sending you good job vibes.

  • Thanks ladies!  You guys are awesome.....I have to believe that my hair styling will take off like a rocket now that I don't have to focus on another job.  Fingers crossed!  I so appreciate all the good vibes and words of encouragement!
  • amy, i'm so sorry to hear about this :( i hope that things pick up for you soon w/the hair styling. hang in there, and good for you for trying to be responsible w/the remaining time you have working w/them

oh and as an aside... i need to get w/you soon about the pampered chef stuff...maybe this weekend? i am busy working all week this week so i haven't had a chance to look at stuff yet.

  • I'm so sorry to hear this. I hate it when things like that happen--when the other person is related to the partner of the firm because they can't let her go so the more experienced and qualified person has to go instead. But I'm glad you get to focus more on your hair styling business. Sounds like a fun job =) Lots of career vibes your way!!

  • So sorry about your job. It sounds like you are already picking yourself up and ready to move on, where ever that may be. I hope this lets you find something that makes you truely happy.
  • ugh.  that's terrible!  I am so sorry to hear that.  I will send you lots of good career vibes!
  • Amy,

So sorry to hear about the loss of your job! I can't imagine how you must feel. I surely wouldn't train someone to do my job if they were getting rid of me, that's just me though and I think I'd be a little bitter about it! Why train someone else? How does that benefit you? I'm mean, huh?!

Dh and I are struggling with one income BUT we're making it work, so that's good news.  It can be done you just have to make changes and adjustments until you find something that works... random thing we did, purged our closets and house to sell some stuff that we don't use on CL. Really if we don't use it, why let it sit around? So we're attempting to get rid of it and make a little money in the process. So that's just a random idea and something we've done.

GL! Sending tons of career vibes your way!

  • I was wondering what was going on, so sorry.  Sending ((Hugs)) and positive vibes to you.  Hang in there.
  • Sorry you have to deal w/ this Amy :(  The really strange thing about this is that (hopefully) it will be a blessing in disguise opening you up so you have more time to do what you love vs. what pays the bills.  From getting a decrease in hours then pay PLUS a 90+ mile commute, it doesn't sound like it a HUGE loss, I know the insecurity of the loss in pay will be hard, but you may just come out of this in a much better place.

  • I'm really sorry, Amy. Your job sounds completely unreasonable with what they are expecting from you right now.

Hopefully you will be able to grow your stylist clientele easier now that you have more time to focus on that, and you will have more time to spend with your friends and family w/out that awful commute!

  • Transitions are never easy. I think you'll find yourself in a much better place a year from now. Since this was not something you had planned, it may be a scramble to move from this to your ideal career. Try to stay positive through the transition, knowing that something better is brewing.

Sending you good career vibes and extra energy for creative thinking.
