Poll: perfume

Tell me about what perfume you wear. . . I am looking for something new but don't even know where to begin.

I keep buying scents that I like (& trying them on in the store), but when I actually use it, it doesn't smell "right" to me. (The last couple perfumes I bought smelled a little old-lady ish)

Re: Poll: perfume

  • I've found that I wear light white florals and some herbs and citrus the best - I don't do well with musks, Orientals, etc. - basically, no heavy scents. I also can't wear rose or other old fashioned types of flowers very well, because it dries down into a dusty "old lady" scent on me (it sounds like you may have the same problem).

Let's see, currently sitting next to my jewelry box are...

Vera Wang by Vera Wang (I don't like her other scents, which I find too cloyingly sweet, but this one is nice on me)

Manifesto by Isabella Rossellini (I freaking LOVE this, it's like a green garden - it's just so fresh and gorgeous)

Escape by Calvin Klein (used to wear this a lot, haven't for a few years now...I prefer "cleaner" scents these days)

Michael Kors by Michael Kors (mmmm...this one reminds me of Hawaii...it's like a tropical garden)

Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel (I find a lot of Chanel's perfumes are too sweet or heavy, but this one is just right - yum)

  • This is my absolute favorite, it's called Hawaii by Michael Kors.  Which doesn't help you much because you live there :) ... but I just love it, too bad it's discontinued.

  • I mostly use Kenzo's Amour... I love Michael Kors' Island too.
  • I wear Daisy by Marc Jacobs.  I also wear Very Irresistable by Givenchy and have for years - I switched to Daisy at Christmas time.
  • I can't really wear perfume due to my sensitive skin but I love RALPH by Ralph Lauren.

  • I can't go anywhere without someone commenting on my MICHAEL KORS perfume.  Its his first one ever and its my signature perfume.  I found this when it first came out and I made all my friends and sister fans as well.  Its a gardenia smell.  The nice thing is, I don't smell it on others so I don't feel like its trendy (which I hate doing).  :)

  • I LOVE Issey Miyake, Juicy Couture perfume, and DKNY Delicious (the green apple one). They are all very "young" smells IMO.

Oooooh have you smelled the man's Issey Miyake scent? It's very hubbahubba!

  • I have Daisy and Michael Kors, too. I also love Kai. And don't laugh but I love Britney Spears' Curious.

And don't laugh but I love Britney Spears' Curious.

Is Curious the one of hers that has "cupcake" as one of the scent notes? Or is that a different one? They're all too sweet smelling for me, but honestly they're not as terrible as I expected. Stick out tongue

I don't think so. It's sweet but kinda floral-y. The descriptions say magnolia with vanillla and musk, but I hate vanilla. I don't smell that in it at all.

  • I have four scents that I love.  Which one I wear on a given day depends on my mood.  In order of favoritism:

Chanel No. 5 - Love this for Fall, Winter, date nights, and nostalgia (have been wearing it since 1998).

Gucci Envy - I get the most compliments when I wear this.  It's a great sweet/crisp scent, noticeable but not overpowering.  I wear it mostly in Summer and it's always my pick for girls' night out.

Ralph Lauren Blue - I wear this almost every day in Spring.  It's a light floral and smells like heaven and gardens and clean sheets.

SJP Lovely - I got this for Christmas and really like it.  It's more floral than I usually go for, but it smells good on.  Perfect for winter-spring transition.

  • My all-time favorite is Burberry Weekend.  I get tons of compliments when I wear it.

I also like Marc Jacobs, and Daisy by Marc Jacobs.

  • I've been wanting to get something new for years now. I find myself running into the same problem about it not smelling right. And I get major headaches if any scent is too strong, even candles or potpourri. Now I was in cosmetics for years so I think I've smelled every fragrance ever made before 2007. And I still only have like 5 that I can actually wear. Pleasures(Estee Lauder), Parfum d'ete(Kenzo), 212(Carolina Herrera), CurveEmbarrassed(Claiborne) and a calgon body spray Hawaiian Ginger(actually my fave).

Tanya- I'm totally interested in attempting to go 'crunchy'. lol. How are you mixing? And are you talking about just regular old coconut oil from the tub that's like vaseline? Is there a specific type of essential oil I'm looking for when it comes to mixing for a perfume? The only ones I know are the ones for like incense.

  • I don't wear perfume too much, but I still have a few bottles.  I wore Chanel Madamoiselle for years & loved it.  I switched a few years back to Gold by Guess & loved it too.  My aunt wanted to buy me a special bottle for me to wear on my wedding day (which repeat it & I'll deny it) but I couldn't wear b/c the bridal lei I had was wwwaaaayyyy to overpowering to be mixed with anything else! But I do love the scent of the perfume & I wear it often now, Flowerbomb by Viktor & Rolf.  Here you can only buy it at Dillards/Nordstroms, but from this link it appears you can get it on amazon too.  http://www.amazon.com/Flowerbomb-Viktor-Rolf-Women-Set/dp/B001FWXIHE

Do you have a sephora near you?  They will give you samples of a fragrance so you can try them out & I am sure most dept store counters will too b/c you really never know about a fragrance until you wear it.

This is what I was going to suggest. I always get a small sample from Sephora (which actually can last a little while) and try it out first before buying. Stuff always smells different out of the store and on you.

  • My absolute favorite is Light Blue from Dolce & Gabbana. It's simply irresistable!

Right now I'm wearing Daisy by Marc Jacobs and Incanto Bliss by Salvatore Ferragamo. ANY scent from Salvatore is fabu. Incanto Shine, Charms and Heaven are some of the other ones. I know Ulta and Sephora carry this line. Definitely worth checking out! The scents are light and feminine, slightly sweet.

  • I have quite a few favourites but these are the ones I always go back to and also seem to get the most compliments,

    Coco by Chanel
    Euphoria by Calvin Klein

There is a new one that I recently tried when I was walking through the mall the other day and it totally captured me. It may be my next purchase, Classique by Jean-Paul Gaultier.

  • I don't wear perfume but sometimes i will wear a body mist that is citrus-y from bath and body works :)  part of why i don't is b/c i'm too lazy and forget most of the time and part of it is for other people - you don't realize it, but a lot of people are sensitive to that stuff and it can really bother their airways (my mom, MIL and MH are like this)
  • black Xs from Paco Rabanne is one of my favs.
  • My more everyday scent is Ralph by Ralph Lauren.

If I want to get fancy I use Beautiful from Estee Lauder or Very Hollywood from Michael Kors.

  • Ralph Lauren Romance.

I usually wear it on special occasions, but when I do everyone seems to comment on it.  All this Michael Kors talk is making me curios, might have to go sample it for myself ;)

    Chanel No. 5

    Gucci Envy

I'm jealous that you can wear both of these! They're both too overpowering on me (I read somewhere that if you have oily skin - as I do - this can happen with heavier scents because the oil in your skin makes them last longer...don't know if it's true, but it kinda seems like it!).

  • For everyday I wear Island:Hawaii by Michael Kors and for special occassions and evening events I wear his Michael Kors for women.

I also like Sung by Alfred Sung.

My advice?  You have to test the perfume on your skin...how it reacts with your personal body chemistry has a lot to do with whether it smells great or not!

  • I love love love Happy Heart by Clinique.....or Happy by Clinique.  I have worn this perfume for the past 11or so years since it came out.  I have tried others but this is my scent.  I smell like grapefruit when I sweat so citrus smells wrks best for me :) You gotta test what best suits your personal scent.  GL:)

i had a professor that was like this.  he requested we not wear perfume in class and if you did he would start getting a reaction immediately.  hence, my switch to crunchy :)

i just use regular coconut oil and add whatever smells i like to it. the oil is at a solid at 76 degrees but here it's usually semi-solid if it's in a cupboard.  i just use essential oils but you can use fragrance oils.  i use coconut oil because i don't like the alcoholyness to perfume, if that makes sense. i use it as a moisturizer or will use it in my hair to control frizzies.

this blog is kinda cool for mixing perfume: http://make-fragrances.blogspot.com/

I love Issey Miyake too...both the women's version for me and the men's version for guys.  Yummy!  I don't really wear perfume much, though.  When I do, I usually use Amazing Grace by Philosophy.  It's a light, clean scent, and I've gotten a lot of compliments on it.
