I have to start physical therapy =(

As I mentioned before, my knee starting acting up a while back, so I went to see an orthepedic doctor and had to get an MRI. Well, I got the results yesterday and thankfully nothing is torn. But it is weak, so I have to start PT to try to strengthen it. I go in Tuesday for my trail to determine the frequency needed. I'm really hoping I can work through this quick and just be back to normal.

Has anyone ever had PT for their knee? Anything I should know before I go in? I figured I would bring gym clothes -- they didn't tell me anything but I assumed going in my work clothes would become a hot mess real quick.

Re: I have to start physical therapy =(

  • I've not had PT for my knee, but I did for my shoulder and it helped SO MUCH! I would usually schedule my appointments b4 work so I could just go unshowered in gym clothes and then go back home and get ready for the day.  You do sometimes get sweaty.  I would reccommend taking an OTC like Advil to help with inflammation and pain b/c sometimes the therapy methods they use hurt a little bit.  Hope they get you back into tip top shape soon!
  • Happy to hear that nothing is torn!  I have never had PT, but I would highly reccomend gym clothes.  Chances are you will be exercising.
  • Honestly, I LOVED physical therapy. It was painful sometimes, but I liked doing something proactive for my health. And it was good to check in with someone every week to see how I was doing. I've never had it for my knee but if you get a good therapist, it's really not that bad.
  • I don't have any experience w/PT, but I just wanted to say good luck!

  • I'm sure you'll see the benefits in no time!  My knees are weak, but I can def tell the diff in them since I've been working out---I'm sure PT will help you and you'll see a dif!!

    GL to you!

  • Gym clothes are a good idea.  Plus it enables them to see if you are doing the therapy correctly or cheating on it.

The best thing I can tell you is that you will have good days and bad.  Don't beat yourself up over the bad.

  • I had acl surgery and needed pt for it. It wasn't bad at all...kinda fun actually. They had me doing all sorts of weird stuff to gain strength and stability. Standing on a bosu ball and bouncing another ball off the wall...jogging on the treadmill, suicides (short sprints), stretches, trampoline jumps and wiggles... Definitely wear gym clothes and gym shoes. Glad nothing is torn. Strengthening the quad, hamstring, calf and shins will help with knee issues a lot!

  • good luck lady!

I ha dPT on my back when I was in an accident...I always went after work, I just wore looser fitting clothes those days, they didnt have me on a treadmill or anything, I dont know what kneww PT entails...but for my back it was a lot of stationary excersizes

  • I am a PT (but for kids). The main thing aside from what the other ladies have mentioned would be to be up front with your PT. Ask lots of questions, if you have pain tell them-we cant always tell. Ask what you should do if you are sore after, some PTs dont want you to take meds before hand bc it can mask the pain and then more injury can happen. Pain prevents further injury by making you stop the activity.

    GL!
