Conservatives come in! (if there are any on here)
Re: Conservatives come in! (if there are any on here)
I found myself anticipating which statements they'd use this weekend on SNL. It was somewhat distracting.
Good points but I feel that Obama will have no choice but to ignore his disastrous policies, period. There is no way he can spend x amount of money to implement his plans when there is already a $1 trillion deficit looming over his administration. I abhor his windfall profits tax but do not see him able to pass that when companies will be struggling in the next several years. His statement about his willingness to review his proposals in light of current events helped to convince me that he can at least pretend to be flexible. Obviously he is untested but I am willing to make that risk.
I agree with you there is no way taxes are not going up for everyone and most of Obama's policies as well as McCain's will not be able to be implemented. McCain has a better shot if he does really cut the spending and cut business taxes to spur business growth.
That being said I wish one of these guys had the guts to say to Americans- sorry you're not getting your subsidized healthcare or billions of investment in jobs etc. however we are going to raise your taxes to get us out of this financial mess. But no way we will hear the truth because that would kill any chance of getting elected. So we can all keep hearing the lies for the next month.
As a liberal, I understand I am not even supposed to be in this thread or even voice a contrary opinion to the "Palin Rocks" sentiment that oozes from the OP, but I really, really agree with your perspective and it really, really surprises me that so many Cons don't see it this way. I don't see how the faux folksyness engenders feelings of confidence? I don't see how spewing out prepackaged/scripted lines, that were sometimes, frankly, out of place, did McCain any good in the long run. In fact, I think Palin is running for 2012, not 2008. She is very stuck on her own cuteness.
First I have to say that I went to bed about 45 minutes into the debate (my normal bedtime is no later than 9:30 people). So... for the time that I did see the debate, I was pleased with her performance (and relieved). She was very nervous going in (so was I!) and little by little she seemed to shed that. In the beginning that bang that was in her eye kept distracting me though....thankfully she must have brushed it away (it was probably driving her batty too).
As for the comments about how she didn't say anything of substance, I don't know. Do any of these politicians say anything of substance in these debates? If they are saying anything of "substance", it's usually not the truth.
And I do have one thing that I really have to get out: I guess I never took a good, hard look at Biden, but his eyes really freak me out.....LOL.
But who is making the argument that folksy = ignorant? I haven't seen that here. I did say that folksy doesn't inspire confidence, but confidence and intelligence are not the same thing.
You aren't running for VP of the United States. Use all the colloquialisms and folksy language you like. My issue is professionalism. I didn't see Reagan, Bush, or Quayle winking, flirting, or otherwise trying to charm their way through their debates. It was embarrassing to watch and did nothing to instill confidence in her ability to function as an adult in a very serious, adult world.
