I need orchid help.

What am I supposed to do with all those veiny roots hanging way out of the pot? They are very long and already look like they're breaking. Do I need to re-pot it so they're under the bark? I just received it today as a gift, so I wasn't able to ask the floral/plant person at the store.

Any great websites on orchid care? I so don't want to kill this one like I did my last one.

Re: I need orchid help.

  • i've always found the people at great outdoors to be very helpful - maybe if you call them? http://www.gonursery.com/
  • I'm pretty sure you just let them be.  orchids will flower then stay dormant (or whatever) for a good year, so don't think you killed it if it doesn't flower for a long time.   I usually water mine every week or two - I soak it with water in the sink and let it drain for a few hours before putting it back in it's spot.

Thanks; that seems simple enough. I killed the first one by over-watering. It's just weird how those big old vein roots are taking over. I fear my cat will munch them!

  • Don't cut the roots & don't re-pot it until it's done blooming.  Just water it like the pp said (a good soak every week/10 days or so) & put it in a spot w/indirect sunlight.  I can't think of any websites off hand, but first figure out what type of orchid it is & then just google how to care for it.  But for now, just let it be & enjoy it :)
