overcharged GST -- who can we report to?

Long story short, we had movers royally screw us today. They originally quoted $180 3 hr flat rate to move 2 desks and a hutch about 3 blocks (it took them less than an hour total). Got to the destination and he said that they'd now be charging $260 plus GST. They did a total $299. So that's GST of $39, when in fact, it should have only been 5% at $13. We have their GST number on the invoice. They are refusing to pay back even the difference on the GST. We are reporting them to BBB as it is (and unfortunately now notice they have an F rating and 14 complaints against them). But is there anyone else you can suggest contacting about the GST?

Re: overcharged GST -- who can we report to?

  • Are you in Ontario?

I'm not sure what you can do about getting your $$ back. But I do know that moving companies are notorious for screwing people over. Moving companies and gyms receive the most complaints for stealing people's money.

After you talk to the BBB, you can also report them to the Ministry of Consumer Services. It is a long, slow process though.

  • Thanks! Yes, we're in ON and I don't expect to get any money back but I do want to be a major pain for them.

If you want to be a  REAL PITA, you could report them the the Canada Revenue Agency - it might lead to nothing, but it could trigger an audit for them...
