Frustrated with name change

I'm off a week before going back to work (enjoying an extended staycation while the hubby went back). Its been nice going through the gifts with him and reorganizing our kitchen space to accommodate the goods.  I've also been going through the rigamarole of changing my name. Thankfully the government offices (dmv/passport/social security) are very clear on what they expect and went through their hoops no problem. I went today to go change my name at the bank and a credit union I've been with since I was younger, and after asking for my info as to why I'm at the bank and if I have the correct paperwork to say I'm married, I wait and then I'm told I can't change my name since I didn't bring him along. (he and I had joint accounts before) and my mom signed me up for my credit union so couldn't change it there either without her signature.  Who knew I needed other people around to change my own name.  Oh well, so it was rather frustrating morning where not much got accomplished, so good luck and be forewarned if your going to change your name, you may need some company :-)

Re: Frustrated with name change

  • I feel ya. I have to have two forms of ID with my new name on it (marriage certificate +1 more thing) to get my SSC, but to get drivers licensed changed I have to have my SSC! .. Now what am I supposed to do for a second form of proof of my new name?

  • Ugh.  I feel your pain!

I tried to deposit wedding checks into my account since we didn't have a joint Savings.  The checks were all made out to "Mr. and Mrs. Sean..."  They wouldn't let me deposit them 'cause he wasn't there, his name wasn't on my account, I hadn't changed my name, etc.

So DH and I went to set up the new account before he went to work one morning, but I didn't have the certified copy of my marriage license, and we had no proof of his address change.  We ended up setting up the joint account with my maiden name, my mom's address on mine, and his parents' address on his.

Fast forward to a week later when we finally have the certified copy, and we're spending DH's day off in the bank for over an hour while we change my name on the five different accounts I have with that bank, change addresses for both of us on everything (which required the apartment lease to prove that...), and get all the online banking set up for the new account.

I am NOT looking forward to Thursday... which is when I'll most likely end up at the SS office and DMV.  Ugh.

  • You don't actually need any form of ID with your new name on it. The only thing you need is your drivers license and marraige certificate. It's also helpful to bring in your birth certificate or passport. Hope that helps!
  • Ugh - I haven't even started this process yet - I am not looking forward to it. But this morning I did send in for the official copies of the marriage license, so I guess I'll start the process soon.

We already talked about the checks from the wedding though - I figured it would be more difficult for met o deposit them, so I'll just sign and he is depositing in his account.  We may do a joint account later....

  • It is definitely a pain in the neck; I'm attempting to change my SSC tomorrow, hopefully it will go smoothly!

Good luck!  Take your ID, birth cert, and certified copy of your marriage license.  It makes the process go a whole lot easier.  KS also had a form I printed from online and filled out before I went in to get a SSC replaced -- it made it a lot simpler for the secretary to fill in all of the information she needed.

  • Thanks! I almost forgot my birth certificate but quickly remembered as I was walking out the door. Thankfully I had no problems at the SSA, other than having to wait an hour!
  • I thought you could mail it in? Does that take forever? Or is it not possible and I'm hallucinating?
  • I'm so frustrated we're about to change banks.  We went today to deposit wedding money that is made out to Mr. and Mrs.- as we really don't want thousands of dollars just sitting around our house- and they refused to accept the checks even though I had our official marriage certificate.  They said that because it's not a "normal" marriage certificate (it's Pennsylvania not Rhode Island or Massachusetts and in Pennsylvania the bride and groom don't even sign the license let alone has it show that I will be taking H's last name) they cannot accept any of the money until I change my name with the bank.  But thank you Citizens Bank for not having your branches in any state connected so I cannot change my name with the bank unless I go to the branch I opened the account in (which is located in a completely different state).  I'm calling up the banker that I normally deal with tomorrow to see what she can do as she had said previously she would handle this all but it's been a complete headache today... to the point that I just want to take all our money out and go to a bank that I know we will have no problems with later down the line if we decide to move states again.
