Tomatoes & Peppers: How many per plant?

How many tomatoes (Roma) and Peppers (Green, Yellow and Red) do you think I can expect to harvest from each plant?

This is my first year doing a garden and I planted my seed packets and they are doing really well, but I just realized I have 23 Roma Tomato plants that have sprouted. I am going to trade/give some away but I am trying to decide how many I should keep.

 Thanks for any help!

Re: Tomatoes & Peppers: How many per plant?

  • I'm able to get tonnes of tomatoes from each plant... peppers, I don't know if I'm unlucky but the last 2 summers I've harvested 1 pepper from each plant.
  • Depends on the variety, conditions, etc.  My Roma are one of my more bountiful plants, though. 23 is a LOT.  I have 8 plants total (not all Roma), and that will have me up to my ears in tomatoes.
  • 8-10 tomato plants should yield an amount sufficient for a family of 4 with enough for some neighbors.  If you are thinking about making tomato sauces or canning, more plants wouldn't be bad.

Depending upon the variety of peppers, we get anywhere from one (bell) to 200 (small, thai variety).  Our habaneros usually have 3-6 per plant per year.

  • we pretty much had limitless tomatoes, but the bell peppers never matured, jalapenos were great though.  We are in zone 5

  • I had 5-6 bell peppers per plant last year. More if I picked them when they were green, less if I let them mature until they were red. I am in zone 8 though.
  • I think 8-10 tomato plants would be plenty!  As for peppers, it depends on the variety we are in zone 5 and have had great luck with banana peppers and jalapenos.  We gave away as many as possible and still ended up with a bag full in the freezer.  Bell peppers- maybe 3 per plant, but not the 10-15 per plant we got with the other types.  We are hoping for a better harvest this year since we finally have a yard and won't be growing in containers.
  • It varies a lot depending on the season. A mild summer can totally dampen the number of tomatoes from a plant. A hotter summer with plenty of watering, can lead you to such a large harvest that you'll be giving them away.

I had a coworker that brought in bags and bags of tomatoes from only three plants. The next year, I planted three plants, and only got snacks from it.

This year, I'm practically going to farm out my side yard with tomato plants. I want a plethora!
