  • I'm laughing so hard at the cowbell conversation.  :p

Thanks everyone for sharing your opinion, especially those who shared their own stories.  I think hearing your thoughts will help me to have more intelligent conversations about this topic IRL too.

  • I don't think it's selfish! You should have kids because you WANT them, not because you are supposed to or whatever.
  • I'm late to the topic, but I have a good example of someone who shouldn't have had kids.

My uncle married my aunt Mel.  Right off the bat she said she didn't want kids.  She didn't have a good home life, and ended up staying at a friend's house and the friend's parents pretty much adopted my aunt.  She considered the father her "dad" and he walked her down the aisle.

Obviously I wasn't privy to their discussions, but my aunt and uncle ended up having 3 kids.  Fast forward to current time.  My uncle has been in jail for almost 4 years because of a car accident that killed the other driver.  My aunt has mental issues but refuses to take medication.  So during this time my aunt and uncle have divorced, and my aunt has full custody.  My grandparents get the kids every other weekend and also are responsible for taking the kids to see their dad.  The kids are majorly messed up and the court system is slow to act against the mother.

Long story short, perhaps my uncle should have really discussed her reasons for not wanting kids.  Albeit you can't foresee that you're going to spend 4 years in jail which will lead to your kids really getting messed up.  She is not fit to be a mother and has proven that her priorities do not lie with her children.  Very sad situation all together.
