  • What are some movies you like so I can get an idea of your taste?

If you haven't seen it yet, Enemy at the Gates is one of my all-time fav's

Did you know they made an off-broadway musical of that?  Only in place of the sex scenes they had musical numbers.  I never saw it, but a friend of mine was an usher for it.  Sherri Reni Scott was in it, I think.

  • Recent ones or all-time fav's?

  • My movie tastes are pretty varied, but I hate typical chick flicks with a passion.

My favorite movie in recent years is probably Capote. Or Little Miss Sunshine.

Edit: I did not like Juno, but loved Superbad. Hated Walk the Line. Loved The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

  • Recent ones I liked: Great Debaters, the Bucket List

Older ones: 300, Elizabeth (loved the first one, the sequel was ok), Casino Royale

TV Series: Mad Men, 24 (seasons 1-5), John Adams, Tudors, Rome

  • Sci-fi: Jumper

    Comedies: Napoleon Dynamite, Knocked Up

    Action: The Jason Bourne series

You might like Grandma's Boy.  Not an intellectual flick, but really funny and Jonah Hill is in it.

ETA: I recently saw The Pursuit of Happiness and Freedom Writers and liked both of those a lot too.

Have you seen Walk Hard?  It basically just makes fun of Walk the Line, obviously.  Similar in style and cast to Talledega Nights.  I liked it, but I like just about everything. :)

Chick flicks with an edge (sort of): Secret Lives of Dentists, Little Children

  • In Bruge (freakin hilarious)

    Little Miss Sunshine

    Dan In Real Life

    Knocked Up

    Forgetting Sarah Marshall

    Transformers

How I Met Your Mother (TV Series)

  • Thanks for the reccs - keep them coming! Unfortunately, I've already seen almost everything recommended.

Dev - either we have the exact same taste in movies or you've figured out mine perfectly (with the exception of How I Met your Mother).

  • I really liked Capote too.

I also really liked Atonement and Life is beautiful (but you have to get this in Italian and read the subtitles - wouldn't recommend the English version).

For funny/chick flicks, I really liked Sex and the City, 40 year old virgin and 27 dresses.

  • Forgetting Sarah Marshall was my favorite movie of the year.

If you haven't seen Big Love, start it!

  • Oh yeah, I really really liked The Departed and The Brave One.
  • lol @ meredith. you're a mess!

recent rentals, i've enjoyed: Gone Baby Gone, The Lives of Others and La Vie En Rose (while all are great films, they're downers, especially the last two)

so, to offset all that, H and i just put Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo in our queue!

LOL We must have the same taste! Those were some of my favorite movies of the last couple of years. I did like Juno though...

  • I haven't seen them yet, but Factory Girl and The Nanny Diaries are in my queue too and I have heard good things about them.  Also, Bobby, The Illusionist, and Over Her Dead Body are in my queue.  Sorry that I can't tell you if they are any good or not yet.

  • If you like affected foreign films, see Ponette.  It's a French movie and about a little girl whose mother dies.  It's really cute and sweet and poignant.

My favorite movie as a child was Shining Through.  It has Michael Douglas and Melanie Griffith.  It's a WWII spy movie romance.  I loved it.  It came out when I was like 9, and I BEGGED my parents to let me see it.  They did, and it was awesome.

Other than that, I have nothing to recommend that hasn't been said or isn't obvious.  I do ditto Mad Men & Big Love, though.

  • Oh yes, I must ditto Harold and Kumar (one and two!). Good stuff. And I enjoyed Tropic Thunder (but it's not out yet, I think).

Movies to avoid: Batman, Pineapple Express, Step Brother, Assisnation of Jessie James.

  • I'm so conflicted about Juno. On the one hand, I didn't hate it when sitting in the theater watching it (though, since it takes place in MN, the weird squeaks whenever something about MN was mentioned got annoying), but I didn't love it, either. The more I thought about it after I left the theater, and the more I heard people gushing about how wonderful it was, the more I started hating it with a firey passion.
  • Bella - soo good.

If you've never seen it, Once. I hate musicals but love love loved it.

And gypsy, H and I just had a Harold & Kumar marathon since I'd never seen either, and I thought the second was wayyy worse than White Castle. Boo.

  • Wanted to add Where in the World is Osama Bin Ladin, I really enjoyed the documentary.

LOL... I saw Pineapple Express 2 weeks ago and loved it.

Um... I've seen it twice, currently have it on the queue, have the soundtrack, and went to see them in concert.

The other Boleyn Girl was good

That's my favorite book!  I haven't seen the movie yet, though.  I am irritated that everyone knows it now when it was *my* favorite book way before the movie.  It's MINE!

Ditto bunny... AWESOME movie. We don't watch a lot of foreign movies because H hates subtitles, but here are some reccs:

Jeux d'enfants (or Love Me If You Dare - in English for some reason). It has the chick from La Vie en Rose and is such a sweet quirky love story.

Jean de Florette & Manon des Sources are great, also. A little bit slow, but so awesomely tragic.

Au Revoir Les Enfants -- so powerful. About young boys in a boarding school during WWII.

  • Hmm... we have that Jean de Florette one at home right now...
