Re: Poll: What are you reading?

  • I am currently reading GMAT For Dummies.

So far it has helped me understand a few things about the GMAT test and I like how it chunks out the different sections.

I really need to take this stupid test before I turn 80.

    I'm reading Organic Manifesto.

I review books and cookbooks on my website and this was one of the ones I got for free from the publisher. I was intrigued by the title.

So far it seems really depressing - like we're already poisoned, from water and air and earth, so what's the point of eating an organic carrot? Hopefully it gets better / more hopeful.

  • Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood.  I'm trying to find help with "gentle" discipline and boundary setting with Ben.  It's an exciting read...not.

  • Over the weekend I started reading The Devil in the White City.  It's a nonfiction book that tells the story of two men in Chicago during the time of the World's Fair that took place there in the 1890s.  One of the men is the chief architect of the fair.  The other man is a serial killer.

So far, it's decent.  I'm about 80 pages into it, and I'm hoping that I start enjoying it a bit more as it goes on.  Its a bit different than the books I usually read.

I used to lurk on the nest's book board, and there were a lot of people on that board who recommended this book.  So, its been on my "to be read" list for a couple of years, and I just finally picked it up.

  • "Something Borrowed" by Emily Giffin

I'm not very far into it--it's my before bed 15min reading book--but it's better than the non-fiction running books I was reading!

I chose it (for $0.50 at a garage sale last weekend) because I wanted something light, easy to pick up/put down, and most of all not appropriate for a toddler! One can only read so many rounds of "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" before it gets old... :z

I just finished "The Pilot's Wife." It was decent. At the end there was suddenly a bunch of political things about a different country that didn't really seem to fit and weren't explained well, so that was kind of a bummer.

Next up for me will be - I think - "She's Come Undone."

  • I am currently reading two books and listening to a third:  Little Women, The Virgin Suicides, and A Thousand Splendid Suns.

I really like all three so far.  I just wish I had more discipline to finish the two I'm reading.

LW is for the GR book club, and obviously I'm sorely behind.  I liked TVS movie and wanted to read the book as well.  It has been sitting on my TBR shelf at home for a long time.  ATSS is another book I've wanted to read and I saw it while browsing books on CD at the library.

Wally Lamb? I read it years ago. I still think about it.

  • Currently:  What To Expect When Expecting and the Baby Owner's Manual.

So far:  I like them both.  They are very useful.

Deciding factor:  Umm, well, I need to know some of this stuff, and I figured it's better to be prepared.  haha.

  • I am currently reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. He also wrote The Kite Runner (which I haven't read it). So far it's a decent book. I chose it while I was at Target the other night. It was on display, I thumbed through it, and decided to get it.

Next book up is The Count of Monte Cristo.

    image
  • I loved both The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns.

I'm deciding between The Poisonwood Bible and The Book Thief for my next read...

Yes. I found a used copy a while ago and haven't gotten to it yet. You still think about it... in a good way?

I loved them both, but I suggest The Book Thief.  It was so great.  I couldn't put it down.

The Poisonwood Bible is one of my favorite books ever.  Read it!

  • I am thinking The Kite Runner and The Book Thieft will be the next reads after the Count of Monte Cristo.

  • The Carrie Diaries

I LOVE it so far. Embarrassed

It's our book club book for the month. We have been reading some pretty serious stuff (The Help, The Ask, Blood Root) so we decided to pick some chick lit this time around. So far, so good!

That IS an exciting read!! We are huge L&L fans, and have been applying the principles for quite some time now.  Yes

  • I just completed The Time Travelers Wife last night

I am going to start When Crickets Cry this week.

This is my next one, when my sis returns my borrowed copy!

And Chymes---I don't know how to describe it. It definitely left an impression. Like "The Kite Runner" does, I guess, but not for the same reasons.

  • I'm reading "First the Broccoli Then The Ice Cream". It's a parenting book that my FIL just wrote/published. It's really great so far (but I had no doubt it would be). I figure I should read the whole thing before I start endorsing it to my friends/fam. :)

That is good to hear - I like the principle behind it, but am having a hard time with Ben since he doesn't really understand a lot yet.  Some days with him I am ready to pull my hair out and find myself using No way more than I want to.

Yeah, at 12 months, and even now at 19, it's all about redirection. They don't really "know" like we want them to :)  I would say that 14-15 months is when we really started to be successful with it. It's good to practice the way you speak now though, so that later you don't find yourself using NO out of habit.

Given the limitations of time and visual impact, DH and I did, too. He read the book first, then I did, then we saw it at the cheap seats :)

Both are great, but I LOVED The Book Thief. It was amazing, so well written and very moving.

    As for me..

What book are you currently reading? Dead and Gone (Sookie Stackhouse-book 9)

How are you liking it so far? I've read it before, the next book in the series just came out so I'm trying to remember where everything left off.

What made you decide to read this particular book? It was on my book shelf/I put a hold on the next book in the series at the library...

I have only read the book. Is it worth while to see the movie or not? I end us usually liking the books better than its movie counterpart. LOL

  • Re:  TTW movie

I liked the movie, too and thought it was worth seeing.  I really love Eric Bana, though.  I also like both seeing a movie and reading a book--they feel kind of like two pieces of a puzzle.  In most cases, I am not one to constantly compare book to movie.

It was a decent stand-alone interpretation of the book. IMO books are usually better b/c of the detail crammed into them, and the fact that you can flip back and forth to re-read certain events to catch their significance, etc. But we didn't hate it as a movie, for sure!
