Downtowns in Central Pa

As noted in my post below, I MIGHT be moving to central pa. I grew up in mechanicsburg so Im fairly familiar with the area but still drawing a blank on one issue...can you help me identify some nice places to live within about a half hour commute of mechanicsburg that have something like a downtown? Im used to areas like west chester, wayne/ardmore on the main line, shadyside in pittsburgh etc...if you know any of those areas. Im thinking camp hill and hershey...yes? other thoughts or ideas?

Re: Downtowns in Central Pa

  • haha dear... you have been away awhile.. Camp Hill & Hershey thats pretty much it! They have a couple of good restaurants and stuff, but nothing like WC! Although Carlisle has a nice downtown with the college down there...

  • I was thinking Carlisle too.  It's definitely not Shadyside (that's the only one I've been to that you mentioned) but it's very cute...some nice little shops and cute (and good) restaurants.  Camp Hill has a downtown but I honestly don't think there's much to it.  Probably the closest you'd get to it is Hershey.
  • BOOO!! I was hoping I was missing a place in my memory of central pa. This could be a deal breaker.

  • Also, since you mentioned cost of living being one of the major reasons you are considering the move, I would point out that houses in downtown Camp Hill tend to cost more than many other places on the west shore.  At least, that was our experience when we were house searching a couple years ago.

And taxes in Derry Township (Hershey) are INSANE!!!

    good luck!
