That's a Reuters photo of Palin's legs at a rally.
Re: WDYT? Sexism or not?
Uh, yeah. I'm not feeling this.
It's like the photographer went for one of those artsy-looking shots. But I think it's a little inappropriate...
And I hardly think the photo would be "compelling" enough to attempt taking if it were between McCain or Obama's legs, kwim?
I'm thinking yes for this reason. It's almost pervy.?
Yeah. I doubt we'd see a shot of McCain's legs. (Not that I'm complaining.)
That kid has the creepiest expression on his face, though.
Weird and probably a little inappropriate, but I don't think it's necessarily sexist. I enjoy the look on the face of the guy between her legs.
Sexy? Yes.
Sexist? No. Only because to me, sexist is doing it only because she's a woman. I can't see this shot being used for HRC or Pelosi or Milkuski.
Palin sells herself as sexy "the heels are on, the gloves are off," peep toe shoes, etc.- to a great advantage. I don't see anything wrong with her doing that. This photo is about her not just about her being a woman.
I think it's a neat picture and probably not sexist, but at the same time, probably not appropriate either.
Nice pumps lady!
There is nothing "sexist" about what either person in the photo is doing. I get the angle thing is semi-suggestive, but that would involve the photographer suggesting something, kwim? You can't suggest something when its obvious the two people in the photo are not in that mind set or doing anything that could be taken the wrong way. They aren't in compromising positions. i dunno - its a stretch.
That was quick...
it definitely has sex appeal - it's "woman in power" imagery.
omg we agree twice in one day. It is a red letter day. :-)
The fact that there are comparable pictures of Obama makes me think it's not sexist.
The fuzziness of her legs kind of makes it look like she has cankles. If I were her I'd be pissed.
Haha, I think the Reuter's photographer is probably just better at his/her job.
In both cases it's very much an historic image. If Obama is elected president, it will be historic. If Palin is elected vice president, it will be historic. Both images say to me 'history is happening before our eyes'.
I think it looks really cool.
Agreed. The Obama pic isn't sexy like the Palin one, but the focus on his legs shows me Palin's pic isn't sexist.
And now I know both candidates have great taste in shoes, which is something I feel passionately about.
But you know who has really good taste in shoes? Meghan McCain. I want her shoe wardrobe.
Either way, I think both pictures are pretty cool, from an artistic perspective.
I actually think it's a really cool photo. I think there's something empowering about it. I think it's because the legs are out of focus. They aren't the subject of the photo, the subject of the photo is the crowd looking up to a woman.
If it were the other way around - legs in focus, crowd muted out, I think I'd have a different take on it.
And then there's the post below about the media needing a hug, they show an MPC rally where someone yells out to Palin, "You're a hottie!" She smiles, laughs a little and says, "Well, what does that have to do with anything?" A great response, but clearly she's enjoying and using the sexy image.
I'm really curious to see how this affects women in politics and women in power. Will there be any carryover?
I didn't know that. When I see pics of McCain's family I just stare at his sons cuz they're kinda good looking!
