fence etiquette?

Re: fence etiquette?

  • PS - I thought the point of putting the good side out was so that outsiders couldn't climb the rails to get into your yard.
  • Before the nest, I'd never heard of people putting the "good" side in. That would just look so weird to me.

  • so this is stalkerish, but since we are FB friends I figured it was okay ;)  I looked up your city ordinance and it says the fence can face either way.

however, if they electrify it, that is illegal ;)

i can see why they did that.

i however, and way to OCD to have my fence 'backwards'.  it would bother me to no end to have the good sides facing in and the bad sides on the outside!  even if it meant i got to look at the good sides.

this x a million.  To me, it's not really good or bad sides...instead it's insides and outsides of fences.  We just put a fence on 4 sides of our property.  "Bad" side is facing in and I would never want it any other way!!

Well, most people put the "good" side facing out because it looks better to everyone else, not for you. As in, from the street, the part that faces looks nice and clean. Not being snarky, but you don't have a right to be annoyed because it is their fence. However, I would be annoyed that they didn't let me know they were moving it so I could keep my dog inside/on leash.

I don't have a right to be angry, but I absolutely believe that have a right to be annoyed.

They put the fence up on the property line.

We got home from work one day, and it was there.  It wasn't the type of fence we would have chosen, or had planned in our minds, to put up.

We would have approached them prior to purchasing/installing a fence.  This is what we had planned to do.  The just happened to get around to it first.

I'm annoyed because I got used to looking at the "nice" side, and haven't had a bit of say in how they've gone about fencing in that side of our yard.

They connected this fence, to 2 portions of our existing fence.

I am perfectly fine having them connect the fences.  I wish they had asked, but I am overall very happy to have my yard fenced in.

What I am not happy about, is how they've up and decided to switch things around without consulting us again.

There isn't room for us to put up a second layer of fencing, because they put the fence on the property line, and both yards are tight on that side.

ETA:  I'm also not trying to be snarky.  I just feel so out of control in this situation.  Our backyard is small and cozy, and we spend a LOT of time out there.  I don't like seeing it change without my knowing in advance.  I feel out of control about my own yard, all because they put up this fence without talking to us first.

I won't make enemies with my neighbors, though.

And overall, I do feel better about the situation, after hearing everyone's feedback.

Thanks so much.  I really appreciate you taking a look.  Big Smile

  • this is also part of your city code though, they should not have it on the property line w/o mutual consent:

"The entire fence or wall, including posts, braces or pilasters, must be located entirely on the owner?s side of the property line. No minimum setback distance from the property line is specified in the City Code.

Two abutting neighbors can agree in writing through their respective attorneys to place a fence or wall directly on the property line between them if that written agreement is filed on the Land Records for both abutting neighbors at the Town Clerk?s office"

  • I never realized this could be an etiquette thing.  I thought people just put the outside of their fence facing outward for the same reason you don't put the siding on your house backwards or your shirt on inside out--it just looks silly to have the inside of the fence facing out.

  • I am surprised they are allowed to put the fence right on the property line. Are you sure that is legal in your area? I know some places have setback requirements.

  • Like others, I would put the nice side out so it looks presentable from the outside, but I live in a very open area where few people have fences and most fences don't go to the property edge.

My neighbors on the other hand have their fence backwards.  I thought they were idiots until I realized it was because their dogs could climb the supports and jump the 6' fence so they had to put it backwards.  They also have an electric wire running around the top of it.  Oddly enough, they appear to be very well behaved dogs.

  • I think since they (wholly) paid for it, they can put it however they like, and change it as much as they like. I do, however, understand why you are annoyed.

When we built our fence (4 board wood - for our horses) we put it 6" inside our property line, to avoid any issues with the neighbors. The boards are on the inside of the posts, which some would call the "wrong" side, but for livestock fences that is how it is supposed to be. It makes it harder for them to push on the fence and get out. Of course, it's obviously not a security fence.

Because of the sleuthing of a PP that says that both property owners need to be in agreement on fencing, I would probably put boards up on my side of the fence. If you use 1" (thick) boards, it wouldn't take up much more space, and would still look nice.

Because they don't seem to speak much English, I doubt they knew about the ordinance. I also doubt they would have a problem with you boarding your side.

you can always stand up on the the brackets and look over their fence to see what is going on.  Then they will realize they should have just left it alone.

    lol.  I like this suggestion.

It is weird that they installed it the "right" way and are now reversing it.  I don't understand why they would go to all that trouble.

  • who cares?  free fence.

imo, if i pay for the fence, i should be able to face the "nice" side to myself or the neighbor.  why should a neighbor get the "nice" side and a free fence, if i want to look at the "nice" side.  personally, i kind of like having the brackets because the people on the "nice" side tend to do more up keep and nail the boards on.  i occasionally take boards over to the neighbors, and they nail them up.  less work for me, and i don't really care ultimately.

dude, it's just a fence. don't like it, put up your own. there are plenty of houses that have back-to-back fences.
  • When you own a fence, the good side goes to the neighbor or the street by code in our area.
  • imagepugznploons:

I don't really know what etiquette is for fences.  Our backyard is all fenced in and the nice side faces the neighbors, I think it would look weird for it to be the other way around, I have never seen fencing like that before.  Brackets are always on the interior around here.  Otherwise someone could easily scale the fence from the outside and hop into the yard, kind of defeats the point of a fence.

This.  I do not understand the purpose of a privacy fence where someone could easily climb and look in.  Around here a fence is for a bit of security as well as keeping animals and children contained.

  • in our city you have to put the good side facing out, if someone complains you have to switch it
  • I have no idea what the right answer is, but if they are doing the labor and they paid for the fence, why shouldn't they have the nice side?
