remembering these once every two weeks is good enough, right?

Re: prenatal vitamins

  • no!!  start building up your folic acid now or you will have a liquid fetus (no bones).  : )

I took 2 flintstones pre-KU and the delicious fruit candy taste had me going back for more daily.

    image
  • I saw gummy prenatals at Target on Saturday. I was so sad they didn't have a sugar-free version; I fuccking hate swallowing prenatal horse pills.

    image

  • Aw look at you, Fent!

I would say yes. I didn't take them until after I found out I was pregnant.

They gave me the most disgusting tasting burps ever .Gross.

  • I was led to believe that this pregnancy thing meant the END of remembering daily pills.  Next thing you know, they'll be expecting me to remember to feed the kid every day.

So did anyone else slack on prenatals and have a non-deformed child?  I mean, I'll try to do better, but I'm hoping if I get sperminated soon, it won't mean guaranteed downs syndrome.

ETA: thanks, pink.  your kid appears to be functional.  good enough for me!

  • I ran out of my trusty Target ones and am taking a raunchy kind from Whole Foods. Ooh that ***'s nasty. And makes my hemmerhoids act up. Not all prenatals are equal.

  • Kristen, do you know your baby already came out?  Why are you still taking them?

Ditto to both the timing and the burps.

  • You should keep taking them when breastfeeding too. Blah. But I do think they keep me healthy. I've nary a cold since starting them three years ago.

  • haha, you have to take them while BFing too.  Your life of pills has just begun.

I have been taking the Rx horse pills since I BFP and I always take them right before bed or even in the middle of the night (like 2 or 3 when I get up to use the bathroom) or they make me feel really sick.  I could just take the Flinties again but my Rx has the added DHA and I'd just have to take a supplement anyway.

  • I didn't take them until I was actually pregnant either. I hate pills. But you should take them once you are pregnant; the folic acid is important and if you don't take them the baby just sucks all the nutrients it needs from you and your body is left without.

  • I think one of the main reason for prenatals is to prevent spina bifida, correct?

  • they made me nauseous so I didn't take them as regularly as I should have, of course I was an irresponsible teenager so...but my kid turned out ok, I think.

  • My doc told my that 2 Flintstone's equals one daily multi-vitamin.  I wonder how many would equate to a pre-natal.
  • I too take mine at night, right before bed. Avoids the tummyache that way.

So this is for my benefit, not the kid's?  That should motivate me.

Too bad it doesn't suck from my fat!

Is that Fenton asking pg-related questions?

  • Fallin, sorry, have you missed my baby crazy husband stories?  My time is coming.  Unless I have trouble and it takes awhile, which isn't exactly worst case scenario in my book.

Unless you bottle feed.  Come to the dark side, Fenton.

  • I always take mine in the morning with my breakfast since that is when I took my regular multivitamin before trying to get pregnant. I've always taken non prescription ones and never had nausea issues with them. It was the DHA supplement I hated.

That's what one of the high risk OBs from when I was stuck in the hospital told me. When I wasn't eating and was all worried about the baby he was all, "Whatever, the baby is fine, it's just going to suck everything it needs out of you and leave you to rot. Worry about you." This time the baby has sucked all the iron out of my blood, leaving me severly anemic. If I don't take additional iron supplements I get dizzy and fall down. Babies. Pshh.

  • What is the DHA supplement for?  Should I be taking that along with my prenatal or is that something you add in after you're knocked up?

It's like, for your brain or sumpthin.  My regular multi-v now has it.  It seems like it has been added to everything these days (cereals included).

What?  And pay money for formula?  I'm more cheap than lazy.  I can't be bothered to take pills, but I will drive across town to get a $5 price adjustment.

I think it's for fetal brain development or something like that. I never bothered to ask.

Edit: I didn't start taking that until after I was pregnant.

the DHA is for brain development. I think you start taking them after you're KU, but I'm not sure.

  • DHA is for brain function development and you really don't need it until you are about 12 weeks or so, Calie.  I didn't take DHA until I peed positive.

Fent, the baby WILL suck your fat out if you aren't eating enough.  One of my first "symptoms" was that I started losing weight all of a sudden for no apparent reason.  The SamLegsSkinny Syndrome, if you will.

    image
  • So, DHA, what is that for again?

  • I never took prenatals before I was pg.  I'm also pretty medium about taking them during pregnancy.  If you're concerned about folic acid, just starting eating cereal - it's usually fortified with it, right?  My OB said something similar to the pp's - other than the folic acid, the vitamins are more for you than the baby, who will draw everything from you (including, apparently, your bones which can become soft if you don't get enough calcium while preg.).

My co-worker told me the other day that she never took a single pre-natal during her entire pregnancy.  Now she wears shoes with velcro on them (no - not the cool kind).  So you should take them to avoid that.

  • I'm glad I asked.  I don't want no stupid baby.

  • If the baby does't suck your fat out, breastfeeding will. I have eaten twice my weight in cake, ice cream, etc for six weeks and am under my pre pregnancy weight.
