Car recommendations?

My H now has a job (YAY!), so we need a second car.  Anyone have experience with the Mazda CX-7 or CX-9?  Any other small- to mid-sized SUVs or crossovers to recommend?  I have a Rav-4 and lovelovelove it, but he isn't sure he wants to have two of the same car, for some reason.

Re: Car recommendations?

  • we looove our 2010 Honda CR-V.  the body changed slightly from the older CR-Vs and it is a lot cuter, slightly larger, and has a very nice ride.  It is also rated #1 in safety features and dependability.

  • My sister's ILs had one (I don't recall which model) and hated it.  They said it didn't feel substantial and started making rattling noises after about 1 1/2 yrs.  I've heard good things about the Nissan Rogue.  I have a Nissan product (an Infiniti) and love it.

Edit - sister's ILs had a Mazda - not sure that was clear.

  • We have a mazda 3. It's not the SUV but we love the car overall. A coworker has the CX7 and she loves it.

My mom had a Nissan Murano and loves it. She has had 2 of them so far.

  • I have a hyundai tuscon and I love it.  I would buy another again easily.

My sister has an Acura RDX and I've been pretty impressed with that as well.

  • I have a GMC Acadia.  It's the best car I have ever owned.  Tons of room, great features and decent gas mileage.  Highly recommend.

  • I love my Honda CR-V.  The rear doors open nice and wide, which is convenient when you need to be wrestling with a car seat.
  • We have the Mazda 5, which is their micro-van. I can't say enough about how handy it is with kids. The rear doors slide, which is so great when getting them in and out of the car. Plus it has a ton of room in the hatch if you keep the third row seat folded down, which we do. The third row isn't one I'd ride in for a long time but it's nice to have if we need it.

  • I looove Murano's.  We have a Ford Escape and we love it, really good mileage, nice space and it handles well.
  • I bought a ten year old Mazda Tribute (small SUV) last month after the stupid hail totalled my little Corolla (I LOVED that car). It's in great shape and I'm starting to fall for it as well.
  • I can tell you NOT to buy a saturn vue.  It looks pretty, and has lots of nice features, but the gas mileage is crap, and it slides all over the road when it rains.

  • My grandma has a CR-V and I love that thing.  It drives so great and the new ones are cute!  Plus I'm a Honda pusher.  Get a Honda.  You won't regret it.

I also have a co-worker who loves her Rogue a lot.

  • We have a Ford Edge and I love it.  It's a lot more roomier than it looks from the outside and I  get really great gas milage (I drive mainly highway to work with minimal stop/go traffic).  We've also taken some road trips in it with family members and it's a comfortable ride.

  • I test drove the CX-7 and I really liked the turbo and the interior, but I didn't like how sloped the hood was. I like to see the end of my car, but maybe that's just me :)  Don't get a Ford Escape. I was so glad when my lease was up, we'll never buy another Ford again.

I can attest to that! Bethie used to have one. Who remembers the white-knuckle drive back from Boston Beer Works. I felt SO badly. :(

Does Nissan still make the Xterra? I like those.

  • If you want an inexpensive wagon with lots of room, we love our new Scion xB. They're funky looking but they grow on you fast. Plus Scion gives new grads $1000.

I rented a MAZDA5 once and LOVED it. My sister has a Nissan Rogue and loves it.

  • I love our new Outback. The body was redesigned in 2010 so it is a lot fancier and roomier than our old one was. The gas mileage isn't what I thought it would be, but it's still pretty good for an SUV (25 city/30 highway). It's very roomy and was voted number one SUV in 2010 or something like that.

ETA: it handles well, too. It snowed shortly after we bought it and to test out the AWD and traction control, we slammed on the brakes on a snowy road and it didn't slide at all. And I love the all-weather package - heated seats, windshield de-icer and defrost on the side view mirrors.

  • J has an xB, and we really loved it at first.  It definitely has much more room on the inside than it appears from the outside.  But I've found that now it's starting to fall apart a bit, and the ride is super rough and bumpy, especially from the backseat (I don't remember it being that way when it was new, but maybe I was blinded by the new car smell during that time).  It's almost 4 years old, but that shouldn't be old enough for it to start crapping out on us.  I got my scion tC at the same time and it's been nothing but awesome.  So I don't know what his car's problem is.

I love Toyota's (which is who makes scion), though, so that's probably what I'll buy for life. My cousin has a Rav-4 which seems really great.  And I used to babysit for a lady who had a Toyota highlander and it was awesome.  She just recently traded hers in for a newer model, which is even nicer.  But I drove it from time to time and loooooved it.  So that's what I have pegged for my "mom car" (don't get any ideas, it'll be a while)

Geeeez.  Hope you enjoyed that novella.  Short version: I lika da Toyota

2010 Honda CR-V EX-L with navigation. Love it.
  • I'm a Honda pusher as well. I love my civic more than life. My experience with Hondas is that they live up to their reputation. Good mileage, easy to maintain, great value for the money. When Heith's Chevy dies, hopefully years from now, we will be getting a CR-V.

     HONDA 4EVA.

  • Thanks, everybody!  Joe hates the way Hondas drive--he's had an Accord and an Odyssey (please feel free to point and laugh about the minivan he drove in college).  We're looking into all the other recommendations, though. :)
  • little late to this, but I have a Jeep Patriot and I love it. It's small, but handles well and is decent on gas.
