I'm such a failure!!

I come in to work and I always make some breakfast. Lately I've been microwaving a mug of oatmeal! So I got a new kind from the store this weekend, and I follow the directions.. and I go to take it out of the microwave and like 2/3s of it is boiled over and all over the microwave plate! So I get it out, wash it off and try again. This time I put it in 30 seconds shorter. Luckily this time I remembered to keep an eye on it, and when I check on it it had JUST started overflowing. AGAIN. WTF? Stupid oatmeal. At least I haven't set off any smoke detectors lately.

Re: I'm such a failure!!

  • Ugh! That used to happen to me all of the time. I have better luck with the "old-fashioned" oats than the "quick" oats.
  • You should try vegan overnight oats.  No microwaving necessary.  takes five minutes.

I have a Green Monster for breakfast (spinach and kale this morning). Also takes five minutes and is portable

  • I like the packets :) trying to watch my calories, so it's nice having a quick easy low cal breakfast (when it doesn't boil over at least!) I definitely don't have time to be making smoothies in the morning, and green monsters really don't sound like my cup of tea haha.

I love oatmeal. It's cheap, filling, discourages tummy fat, promotes heart health, and has 150 calories. :) It's probably the best lifestyle choice I make all day... It's all downhill after breakfast! LOL

Yeah, but it tastes like moist cardboard.

  • okay, my next suggestion is to use your office kettle (or bring one), but there's probably someone there who drinks tea, and pour the boiled water into your bowl after you put your packet of oatmeal in.

Good for you if you are eating oatmeal, but those packets of oatmeal don't fill me up unless I eat two!

  • We don't have a stove top here, so no kettles for us! we used to have the insta-hot thing where it's a seperate faucet that instantly pours out super hot water, but it broke :( I just need to adjust my cook time! It was the first time I'd used this kind of oatmeal in a while, and I just gotta get used to it again :) And maybe use my taller mug. Or a bowl!! hehe. The BEST oatmeal ever is from Trader Joes, it's steel cut oats (the best!) and it's frozen, so you never have to measure out water, you just microwave it, and it's perfect every time :) and it's perfectly sweetened! Not too sweet, just sweet enough. then I'd add a few dried cranberries, oh so delicious :) But our new house is too far from TJs so we never go anymore :( I miss that oatmeal. It was still only 150 cals but filled me up so much better than these little packets!!

  • You can buy plug-in kettles!

You don't have those in your office?

  • Lol I've never even seen a plug in kettle. No one here drinks tea or anything.

It does. It's true. I doctor mine with Splenda, cinnamon and/or nutmeg, and raisins. It helps.

Electric kettles are like $15 at Walmart and are fantastic.

Yes.  Also called Electric Kettles.  I was trying to think if there was an American word for "kettle" lol....

  • damn Hayley, you do suck. hahaha JK

I agree with the electric kettle! Worth it!

I love the little packets with fruit and cream!!!

  • I've tried the cinnamon/brown sugar kind... it still tasted like cinnamon flavored moist cardboard.  I can't do it.  Adam loves oatmeal though.

  • Yeah but it seems kinda silly to spend 15 dollars just on something to make oatmeal lol.

Matt cooks ramen noodles in hot water. We drink massive amounts of tea in winter, too. Hot chocolate? :)

I had one in college.  I loved it!!  I also used it for Ramen noodles.  And Easy Mac.  You can also use it for instant coffee.

  • Haha I seriously would have nothing else to use it for, no tea, no coffee, no hot chocolate, no ramen... I don't really drink anything but water, such a waste of calories ;] hehehe.

     AGREED! What is porridge?

  • Is it another Canadian thing?  Were Goldilocks and her 3 furry companions Canadian??

  • LOL of course porridge is a real thing. I think it's British-ish?

  • I actually have no idea what porridge is.  But I do know it's not oatmeal.  I just went to our pantry to investigate, because I know that we have both oatmeal AND porridge down there.  I looked at the boxes and oatmeal clearly says oats on it (duh) but the porridge just says hot cereal.  It is sooooo good.

  • Update:  I'm a moron.  Porridge is wheat.  The box is CLEARLY labelled in HUGE letters, cream of wheat.  So oatmeal is oats, porridge is wheat.  There ya go, lesson for the day has been learned.

Porridge tastes really good with cinnamon, sugar and just a splash from a bag of homo milk ;)

Me, too. "Homo milk" will never cease to make me giggle.

  • Ok when I was in London we went to Pret and had porridge for breakfast... and it was oatmeal.  I was SUPER confused bc I was pretty sure that porridge was cream of wheat... Ugh.  But the Starbucks in London also sells oatmeal as "Porridge" SOOOO maybe its different in England than in Canada???  Who knows.

Has anyone tried Swiss Style Oatmeal???  It's cold and made with Yogurt! It's AUH-MAZING!  You can make it the night before and let it sit in the fridge and it's ready when you get up!  I like to put apples, dried cranberries and almonds in mine!
