One of the other threads and some people's replies got me wondering... who makes more, you or your husband?
I make more, which is really hard for Matt (we're both pretty traditional people). I keep reminding him that his benefits are way better, so his actual salary is significantly higher than mine.
[Poll]
Re: Who makes more?
I make more. Adam works construction and his schedule is super-flexible, so sometimes he works less hours and sometimes he works more. So I make more, plus, I have benefits.
ETA: But we both make VERY decent money, so I'm not worried about it!
I'm the special snowflake.
I HAVE more money than my husband (at least what I came into the marriage with), but his money is more consistent. But that will change now that I'm building up my clientele for my counseling position.
I have only been working for one year. H has been working for 12 years. H makes about 15 to 20 k more than I do and gets annual bonuses, which I don't. We both have good benefits (I work for the federal govt). However, my earning potential is better because I have my masters degree and its an asset in my line of work (he doesn't really need one to advance). Eventually I may make more than him, but he doesn't care. He just wants more money, period. Sometimes he makes comments that bother me. He will say that we are "poor." However, we each separately make more than either of my parents ever did together and I had a big family and had everything I needed, so I don't know what he thinks "middle class" or "rich" is.
Wow, you really are a budgeting queen. The two of us could probably make it on that if it weren't for HH's debt, but I'm still impressed. I know COL has a lot to do with it, but I can't imagine that it's much lower where you are than it is here.
He isn't clinically nuts, Hayley, but he is delusional about money.
His groomsman included it in his speech,
"Old Jonny NEVER has any money....until he wants a new toy."
He is always telling people we have no money. It's embarrassing.
I have been working 3 years longer and make more.
He's getting laid off next month so maybe he will find something that pays more at that point.
I kind of feel like you threw it out there so I'm gonna ask, what do you make?
Clearly personal and you have every right to pass but you made me more curious.
TBH, I just think it is interesting to hear what is good money in other parts of the country. And then it makes me depressed that I live in such an expensive area.
Good luck with your job hunt!
Yeah, things are super-cheap here. I wouldn't change it for the world!! I'm not ACTIVELY job hunting at the moment, but I've been thinking about it. I've been at this job almost two years and it's really starting to be a drag!!
ETA: I just looked at cost of housing in Huntsville, AL vs LA, Ca.... Los Angeles is 185% more than here!!!
HH is a cop so base salary he makes alittle less than I do, but once he starts racking in the OT we are 50/50 and some years with him pulling in more. As he continues to rise in years and ranks he will def surpass me. My raises and such don't work like his since he works for NYC. Two more years til top pay!! I hope they come fast cuz we could sure use the money!!!
He could care less who is making more just as long as combined we can get by
sboone-I would punch him in the face! That's just rude. Maybe you should have a little chit chat about that... how bout just no mentioning money to people?
Hah I don't think I'm much of a budgeting queen! I'm guessing our COL is pretty low, our house is pretty much out in the boonies. Our house payment is pretty darn low, and I don't have to pay for my own gas or car insurance since I drive a company car. Plus we have no debt or loans besides our mortgage.
Turning three shades of green with envy. We've spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $3,000 on car stuff (repairs, insurance, gas) in the last two months. It may be a little more; I don't have my spreadsheet here.
HH's student debt is a killer, but I refuse to think about it in those terms because it was part of the deal when I married him. I knew what he was bringing to the table financially. I brought a savings account, he brought loans, and now both the money and the debt are "ours." We'll be okay if we can get the dang cars to hold together for a couple of months at a time!
Its his friends he tells this to, so lucky for me, they know he exxagerates! He also uses it as an excuse if he doesn't want to do things with them...haha
Haha I've been doing the same thing... I have friends coming up from Cali this week who want to go on all sorts of epic adventures, and I just say oh sorry we don't have any money right now...
While I may have a nice company car, HUBBY does not! he has a 94 volvo wagon, which I've spent at least 4 grand fixing since we got it, plus I pay his car insurance. It's got a bad oil leak, doesn't start sometimes, and the check engine light is on. We are taking it in soon to get an estimate to fix it all... who knows how much that'll be!! Ugh plus he's always needing dental work since he didn't have insurance for many many years and now he has been getting crowns and fillings, I've already spent like 2k on his freaking teeth lol and now he needs more crowns!!
I think this makes a big difference in living. People can get by on smaller incomes when there's no debt issues. I came from a big family, and my parents didn't contribute to my education, so I have school loans to pay. Luckily fees are much lower in Canada (I know lots of people from NY who come to Ottawa for school) and I got a full scholarship for my masters. But if I was living on my own, my life would be alot different! Luckily H understands and didn't have any student loans of his own...
We're the same way as Hayley. Only debt we have is our mortgage and my car loan. My parents paid for my school so I don't have any student loans or anything. We don't even have any credit card debt.
LA is only 54% more expensive than it is here..... FAIL! That's what we get living so close to DC. Housing is 154% higher though
New York is 78% higher, but housing is 192% more expensive.
STU- it is only 2% more expensive here than where you are-- but your utilities are 13% cheaper
Just another reason I don't like living in LA. I want to get back to Ohio ASAP!
H makes a lot of money (why we came to LA) but with cost of living it doesn't really work out to be all that much. He makes a good 10 times more than me right now, but that's because I have a crappy part-time job since I had to quit my real job to move here. But even before we moved he made way more than me....and he always will. But the next move gets to be for a job I really want since we made this one for him.
HH got top pay a year after we were together wow it was such a NICE jump! Woooohooo!!! Hopefully it will come fast those 2 years! He definately makes more than me now before we were pretty even but his pay pretty much doubled. Sigh oh if only that could happen agian! LOL then I would just quit. Can I just tell you I adore UPS!!!
