Breastfeeding Pumping Questions

Hi all,

I am back to work and am pumping at work. For those who pumped at work..

1) How many times in the day did you pump?

2) How long (minutes) did you pump for each time?

3) How long (months) did you keep it up?

I am on day 2 of being back and am really struggling given my schedule. I feel like all I am doing is preparing to pump, pumping or cleaning up after pumping,  I am not sure when the real work will actually happen!!

TIA!

Try the national working mom's board - you will probably get quite a bit more answers :)

    For me:

    1) 3 at work, 3 outside of work (in addition to nursing DD)

    2) I pumped a minute or two past when I was dry - usually about 15-20 minutes

    3) I pumped at work until DD was 12 months, nursed a bit past that

Pumping is HARD work, and if it is something that is important to you, you already have to get in the commitment mindset.  Once you find a routine, it will go much easier.

Are you able to work while you pump?  I was able to have a computer in the room I pumped in (at least when I was in my office and not at client's) so I didn't loose out on too much efficiency.

Also, consider buying multiple pump parts.  I just used a fresh set of parts every time I pumped at work and washed them at night - saved me time washing during the day.

Hang in there - you will figure out a routine that works for you, and it will get MUCH easier!

    Hi all,

I am back to work and am pumping at work. For those who pumped at work..

    1) How many times in the day did you pump? 2-4 (4 at the begining and then I dropped down to 2 later)

    2) How long (minutes) did you pump for each time? probably 15-20 minutes.

    3) How long (months) did you keep it up? 6 long months at work - til my DS was 9 months old and suddenly refused to nurse.

It can sometimes be really tough and I hated it alot of times but i know it was so good for my DS and it saved us a ton of money.

Keep it up though if you can....it will get easier once you get into a routine.

    Good luck!

    Hi all,

I am back to work and am pumping at work. For those who pumped at work..

    1) How many times in the day did you pump? 2x per day.  Typically about the same times I would normally nurse.

    2) How long (minutes) did you pump for each time?  I pumped for quantity, not minutes, to keep my supply up.  Sometimes it would take me 20 mins, other times 45.  I also found that even when I was 'dry', if I kept pumping, I'd get another let down after about 5 mins or so and I'd get more.  Massage during pumping also helps A LOT.  A LOT.

    3) How long (months) did you keep it up?  I successfully nursed/pumped for Alexis for 12 months.  She has never tasted formula and is not on to while milk/ soy milk combo as we transition to whole milk fully.  It is HARD WORK and takes dedication and a lot of time, as well as an understanding and supportive workplace.

I am on day 2 of being back and am really struggling given my schedule. I feel like all I am doing is preparing to pump, pumping or cleaning up after pumping,  I am not sure when the real work will actually happen!!

    TIA!

    Hi all,

I am back to work and am pumping at work. For those who pumped at work..

    1) How many times in the day did you pump?   I really struggled (and didn't have much of a supply anyway).  I wanted to do 3 times a day usually only did 1 or 2.

    2) How long (minutes) did you pump for each time?  Usually about 20 minutes.  The whole process would take about 1/2 hour.

    3) How long (months) did you keep it up?  1 month.  My son decided he was done nursing at 4 months, and I couldn't keep a supply up with just pumping.

I am on day 2 of being back and am really struggling given my schedule. I feel like all I am doing is preparing to pump, pumping or cleaning up after pumping,  I am not sure when the real work will actually happen!!

  • 1) How many times in the day did you pump? 3, I pump right when I get up in the morning and then twice at work.  I have thought about adding one more session during the day, but at this point I am pumping a little more than what she is eating while she's at daycare.

    2) How long (minutes) did you pump for each time? 5-10 minutes

    3) How long (months) did you keep it up? This is my 4th week back, and I hope to make it a year.  So far it's going fine, but like I said above, I think I may have to add at least one more pumping sessions if Carly starts needing to eat more while she's at day care.

I am on day 2 of being back and am really struggling given my schedule. I feel like all I am doing is preparing to pump, pumping or cleaning up after pumping,  I am not sure when the real work will actually happen!! It is not fun pumping at work, but I try to look at it as a little break from my job.  What are you doing to clean up?  I just rinse my materials out and set them out to dry, but I have heard that you don't even need to do that.  Some people just throw them in a bag and into the fridge, and it's just fine.

    1) How many times in the day did you pump? 3x/day

    2) How long (minutes) did you pump for each time? 20-30 minutes. I went back to work at 7 weeks and around 5 months I had to start taking 5 minute break between. When I resumed there would be more milk.

    3) How long (months) did you keep it up? I pumped for almost 11months before DS was fully transitioned over to whole milk. Stay determined and you will not waiver. I smelled like syrup due to fenugreek for a few months, ate oatmeal every morning and drank way too much tea, but it was worth it.

  • My situation is a little different. I never nursed and have exclusively pumped since dd was born. I used to pump more often when she was little- every 2-3 hours initially to build up my supply.

    Here's my current schedule:

    1) How many times in the day did you pump? I pump 3 times per day and am able to get what she needs for the day.

    2) How long (minutes) did you pump for each time? I always pump for at least 20 minutes. I pump until I am dry - usually about 20-25 minutes.

    3) How long (months) did you keep it up? 6 months and still going strong. I have about 1300 oz. frozen in our deep freeze but it will probably only feed her for 2 months so I'm going to try and keep pumping for another 2-3 months so she can get bm until she's one year old.

I HIGHLY recommend getting a pumping bra. If I didn't have it I definitely would have quit a long time ago. I have the Simple Wishes pumping bra at Target. It's in the bottle aisle next to the pumping supplies.

    Good luck!

I just use my regular bra, and it works just great!  I bought one of those pumping bras, but I think I am going to bring it back.
