What should I read next?

I have such high hopes for reading while in Aruba.  I'm planning on finishing the Millenium series there (I'm almost done with the 2nd book now and I'm loving it).  What else should I absolutely not miss?

Of course, my sister pointed out that I am traveling with an 8 month old, so I may be overly optimistic about my beach reading time.  Whatever, Negative Nelly - peddle your wares someplace else.

Re: What should I read next?

  • I have just started The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, and am struggling with all these Swedish names and places.

I think the next book I'm going to read is The Reader.

  • Are you wanting something serious or beachy fluff?

My favorite fluff series that I recommend all the time here is the Enchanted Inc books. Bethie also just got me hooked on The Luxe series.

Have you read the previous two books?  I read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and am almost done with The Girl Who Played With Fire.

  • I'm not all that up on new books, but if you haven't read it, go get yourself a copy of Valley of the Dolls.  Serioulsy the best beach reading ever.  Right now I'm reading the Time Travellers Wife, and I highly recommend if you haven't already read it.

  • If you're not opposed to YA, I'm on the last book of the Hunger Games series. It's excellent.

I enjoyed The Passage, but it's over 1100 pages or something crazy like that. Good book though.

Like Bob, I'd recommend The Hunger Games. I just started and it's great.

  • November, I did read the first two.  For some reason all the names didn't overwhelm me in the first one -- maybe because they were all Vangers.
  • I'll second groomz on TTW, and Water for Elephants if you haven't read that yet.

  • Don't do what I did and bring The Pact and My Sister's Keeper to read on the beach.  I did that in our honeymoon and they are totally Debbie Downer books.

I loved the Millennium series and really liked the first two Swedish movies.

I just read Think Twice by Lisa Scottoline and couldn't put it down.  It's a quick read that might be good for the beach.

I love the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich.

Jealous of your trip - have fun!

  • Kay, save yourself the time and don't bother with The Reader.  It's a terrible story.  I haven't seen the movie, but I can't imagine why someone would want to make that crap into a movie.

November, you already read the Art of Racing in the Rain, correct?  Because that'd be my recommendation.  I also really liked The Weight of Silence -- Winger and I both read that one and enjoyed it.  And if you haven't read The Book Thief, you should.  It's so good.

  • As much as I hate to admit it, the Hunger Games triology is kickass. I'm sitting in a food court in Chicago jonesing like an addict needing a fix for Mod to send it to my kindle.

  • I took two books on vacation and read all of one page. My days of beach reading are sidelined until there aren't kids around to ask " mommy, what are you doing?" every 2 seconds. Fallin, we ate at the Rick Bayless fast food stand in the old Marshall Fields last week. Yum tacos.

That place is really good especially for a food court.

  • We were pleasantly surprised. Since we were only in the city 5 hours we didn't want to spend too much time in a restaurant so that worked out nicely. I kind of wanted one of Marcus Samuelsson's hamburgers too.

  • I second Calli, The Art of Racing in the Rain is an excellent book. I read Picture Perfect by Jodi Picoult recently and it was pretty good. Rattled by Christine Coppa is a fluff memoir probably a good beach read.
  • WTF is The Hunger Games? I had never heard of it until Mockingjay!!!!!!! started popping up on facebook.

It's a dystopian YA book, sort of "Lottery"-esque. Pretty damn good.

I'm thinking I should delete my thread above so as not to tempt the few people on here who seem to be reading it. Good idea?

Hunger Games is the first book in a 3 book series. It takes place in a post apocalyptic world that is made up of 12 districts, and The Capitol, which reigns over all districts. Every year, to demonstrate just how much control they have, the Capitol holds what they call "The Hunger Games" - a televised event in which each of the 12 districts nominates two representatives to participate in said games. Participants get thrown into an arena, and are forced to fight to the death until there is one victor.

The book is narrated by Katniss, a girl who nominates herself for the games to save her little sister.

  • Thanks everybody!  Yes I did read (and love) The Art of Racing in the Rain.  I may have to check out The Hunger Games.

I borrowed my sister's Kindle so that I could travel w/o a bunch of books, so I'll have to continue to look at what to add to it.

Me neither but this is more dystopic backdrop for suspense. It's really gooood.
