I thought this post from F&B was kind of funny...

until i researched what the heck a "Balenciaga Pompon" was... it's a $1500+ purse! i cannot imagine spending that much on a bag. as in, being able to. i doubt in my life that i will ever have enough money that i can fork over more than $1000 for a bag. it's just insane to me.
(and to be clear, i'm not grousing about whether or not she SHOULD spend that, i'm saying i can't imagine having enough money that i'd even be able to.)
i want her paycheck. ; )
Re: unable to comprehend
Ditto. If I had $1500 to spend, there are so many things I'd rather have than a purse. I don't see the point in spending big money on purses, they're just not important to me. I guess I'm uncool and unfashionable.
Mr. Sammy Dog
well, my guess is that if she can spend $1500 on a bag, she probably has plenty of money for all those other things as well. like, proportionately, she spends more money on most or all items. kwim? i doubt she's skimping on healthy lunches or vacations to have the bag. she can probably afford it all.
This exactly!
I don't understand Coach love just because I have yet to see one I would pay more than $25 for. Why would I want to to pay that much to be a walking billboard for someone? Sorry, JMHO.
As for the $1500 price tag, if I had enough money that every other aspect of my life was comfortable, I'd maybe consider it. But in the end, I would be more likely to help out my family or friends just because that is important to me. It's all about priorities and what you value in life enough to spend your time & money.
I don't get Coach love either. I especially don't get Louis Vuitton love. The brown bags with the tan V&L are just plain fugly to me!
I get the most compliments on the Target bags I get on the clearance rack. I could get 187 clearance purses to her ONE expensive purse :-)
On the issue of being able to afford the purse...sadly I know a couple people that buy things like this that can't afford them. People get "brand name blinders" on and can't see the big picture. So sad.
Wow - I guess I knew you can spend a ton on purses, but $1500 still knocks my socks off!. As you all say, it is definitely about priorities, and I'm sure she must be able to afford it without skimping on other things too much.
I just don't care enough about fashion to spend that much on a bag. I'd be afraid to take it anywhere. As for me, I would take the $1500 and either:
a) put it towards our mortgage (which is nearly paid off
)
b) use is on a vacation
c) use as part of my Christmas shopping budget and have some left for holiday donations.
You?
This is a good point - I guess I do know plenty of people who have racked up a TON of credit card debt and have nothing to show for it but fancy clothes, purses, furniture, etc. Just stuff they will eventually replace with newer and better I suppose...
i also don't think it's fair to assume she doesn't do these things too.
as i said, i just cannot imaging being able to afford a bag like that. it's crazy expensive! it's like when i walk through the oval room at macy's or walk through Bloomies. i'm just too po' to be in there! : )
If I had no debt and enough savings to feel comfortable, I would:
Take my family on a vacation (inc. parents, siblings, nephews)
Pay off sisters' college loans so they could find the job they love without worrying about money
Give back to people who have helped me accomplish goals
Buy Dad the '69 GTO he wrecked as a teen and has regretted for 40 years or payoff the motorcycle he dreamed of for years
This list could go on forever...
I did hotwire for our honeymoon and got into a lot of 4 star hotels. I loved looking at any magazines they had in the room and will never forget looking at a VERY "OK" looking pair of earrings that cost..... drum roll, $40,000!
While I can't imagine a 1K purse, my boss acquired a 3K purse from her brothers very wealthy, fashionista girlfriend. After freaking out (boss is a SUPER insane thrift store shopper), one has to admit this is a handmade, high quality purse that will literally last the rest of her life and onwards. All my purses fall apart because I wear them out. But I still can't spend more than $30 for a purse.
But 40K for a pair of earrings (and they were not just huge diamond rocks or anything that at least scream out I PAID TOO MUCH) just knocks my socks off.
I LOVE purses, but I have never and could never imagine spending over $100 on a purse. I have never even spent that on a purse, because I change them up all the time and get sick of one and move on to another after a couple months. I have a tough time spending $50 on a purse let alone $1500.
I guess different things are important to different people.
I know I spend more money on certain things for the quality, so I am curious if it is a name and great quality, or just a name.
Name brands apparently matter to someone over on that board...I chuckled at this response:
I hope this doesn't come across the wrong way- but thank God it wasn't your new Chanel!
i know. she is the nestie that gets ripped on all the time for her fashion and beauty blog.
name brands don't matter to me in most things... except jeans. : )
From the looks of the OP's house in her blog she can afford Balenciaga and Chanel... to each their own I guess! :-)
I care about name brand peanut butter, hah!
Also, according to another thread about Balenciaga a few posts down, she owns three of them.
Not that I care, of course, how she spends her money, but... yeah, it's just hard for me to imagine.
I have never looked at the F&B board before. It's foreign territory to me over there
I'd also never heard of Balenciaga before this post.
I saw some Ferragamo shoes in Florence that were like works of art! Just stunning! But...even if I had the money I wouldn't spend it on shoes because feet are gross. At least with a purse you can just carry it and not stuff sweaty stinky feet into it
I also almost bought a Dolce & Gabbana suit in Venice but I think DH would've killed me if one suit equaled a $2000 credit card bill. Even though it was the softest, light-weight wool I've ever felt and had a jacket, vest, pants, and a skirt and matched my skin perfectly and the buttons were placed perfectly to be super flattering.
*sigh*
I didn't mean to imply that she doesn't help others, just that if I had $1500 in my pocket with no other financial obligations, my first thought would not be a purse in that price range. But like you, I cannot fathom having this amount of cash available to spend on a purse.
I'm totally in the minority, but I don't think $1200 is bad for a bag. I buy one designer bag a year and they last for YEARS, opposed to spending a couple hundred dollars a couple times a year on a bag that is trendy and falls apart. As for LV, it's been around for a loooong time and has always been and always will be a classic.
Just because someone carries a designer bag or wears designer jeans/shoes doesn't automatically mean they have racked up a ton of credit card debt, their priorities may just be different than yours - as long as people are financially responsible I don't care how they spend their money.
Wow... I spend about $30 on a purse and make it last about 5 years... so I guess it's just all a matter of perspective! But then, fashion isn't important in my line of work, nor among my friends, and I've been fashion-illiterate my whole life. So I'm probably not "normal" in this respect.
Just to clarify--I'm not judging either. It's just interesting how different people choose to spend their money. I'm sure there are money choices that I make that would seem baffling to other people as well.
I agree that $1,200 is a lot to spend on a purse, but I guess if you are living that lifestyle you probably don't think twice about it.
I do have a lot of Coach purses, but the nice thing about Coach is that they warranty their purses. So, if the stitching starts to fray or a strap breaks they will usually replace it for you.
I don't get the designer bag hype at all. DH bought me a Coach a few years ago as an extravagant birthday gift, and I don't know if I'm particularly hard on purses or what, but within 6 months, the zipper broke. I've heard Coach will fix it, but haven't found the time or inclination to fight the crowds at MOA to get to the store.
I love purchasing unique/fun/cheap bags on Etsy, and have gotten far more compliments on those than I ever got on the Coach, and some of them have lasted way longer too!
This is going to sound snarky/snobby and I don't mean for it to, but I don't consider Coach a designer line. To me designer is - LV, Chanel, Gucci, Heremes, YSL, etc. and there is a BIG difference between those lines and your run of the mill - the leather, craftmanship, quailty, etc is ahhhhmazing. Again, not everyone's thing, but I understand why those that can afford them do.
As for Coach - throughout the years I've had plenty of Coach bags and have never had a problem with a single one; I'm not a fan of the cloth ones with their logo all over them, but have never had a problem with their all-leather lines.
Coach isn't a designer line - it's a bridge line. Prices and quality aren't high enough to qualify to be a designer line.
I do indulge in the Coach bags and I love them. I have a Coach wallet and checkbook holder too....I got them YEARS ago, and they still look and feel great. But I rarely buy them at full price - I'll get most of them on sale or I had a coupon or something.
And I think you send the Coach bags down to Florida for repair - if I remember correctly. Check their website. Did you register it?

My thoughts exactly. Kimee13, I agree with everything you are saying. And I think that everyone has the right to spend their money the way they want it. I have a cousin who gets a new Burberry or Marc Jacob bag a couple of times a year and a friend who goes on vacation every other months. I think that it is great that they work hard for their money and should be able to splurge on whatever they like. Especially since they are also financially responsible with everything else.
I think this is just one of those things that is hard to comprehend if you're not "there". For example, if you're making $60K/year and you're thrilled to have built your savings up to $5K, then yes, the idea of spending $1200 on a PURSE seems insane and you automatically think of all the other- more altruistic- things you'd do with $1200.
But to some people, spending $1200 on a bag might be the same % of money that someone else might spend on a $150 bag. If you make $350K/year, for instance, and your have $100K in savings, a $1200 purse probably doesnt seem like a crazy thing to buy. I'm also sure that many of the people who could easily afford a $1200 bag also use their money in more charitable ways as well. It's not like they are choosing a purse over their family.
And for the record, I'm a Target handbag connoisseur
FWIW, I buy plenty of designer items AND give a lot to charities throughout the year, it's possible to do both and not make upwards of $300k. I don't nickel and dime myself with the Lia Sophia, candle, and the rest of the crap parties which allows me to save for what I consider to be classic pieces. What amazes me is how much people spend on those "parties", they're just not my thing, however, like I originally said - if you're financially responsible feel free to spend your money however you like, especially in this economy.
