Re: unable to comprehend
I am not one to judge how others spend their money, because I'm sure people would roll their eyes at some of the things I would buy. But yes, I would love to have $1500 to just spend on something nice for myself. That would be awesome!
I buy cheap bags, but that's because I beat the hell out of them.
I just bought a $60 diaper bag (I got it at a discount), and of course my biggest concern was that it would work for the twins and not make DH look stupid. I always giggle when I see guys carrying around pink diaper bags with flowers on them.
i must admit, i'm now curious about your handbag collection and the whys behind what made that become the thing you treat yourself on.
i don't really treat myself on anything because we spend pretty freely on things like groceries and dinner and entertaining so that doesn't leave a lot of money for big "splurge" items but i consider all that entertaining money a splurge. the whys behind that is that we love good food, i love to cook and we really enjoy spending time with our friends.
so, what spurred your attraction to handbags?
i wish i could find a handbag i really like. they are always too big or too plain or too gaudy or they have gold/bronze hardware or they have dumb handles... basically i've never found a handbag i really really like. if i did, i'd probably buy it no matter what the cost. but, i'm super fussy about bags. : )
I have a LV speedy that was given to me by my amazing-gift-buying-generous husband when we were engaged. I have carried it almost daily for close to 3 years and it is in terrific shape. Amortized, it's cost less than $1/day to own it/use it. And I will be just as comfortable carrying it at 64 as I am at 34. (And it will hold up.) He paid for it in cash and didn't skip a mortgage payment or a meal in order to buy it.
I find it interesting how quickly people jump to conclusions like -- oh they must be in debt, or oh, they must not give to charity. It's ... surprising.
Basically, I like nice things, period. Am I materialistic? Yeah, probably, but I am who I am. DH and I work our butts off to travel, shop explicitly(and yes I'm all about a good sale), eat out, socialize with friends, etc. Why do I buy designer jeans, purse, shoes? Simple - because they feel good when I wear them and I can tell a big difference in the way they wear and I look, which in turns makes me feel good. Do I need 20 pairs of Old Navy jeans in my closet? Nope, I'm good with having 5-10 premium pairs that fit perfect and will last a couple of years - quality is more important than quantity for me. I was taught growing up to save for nice things, treat them well and you will have them forever(or at least a very long time) and so far that philosphopy has rang true for most of the pricier items I have bought.
Looking back, I'm glad we've mixed the classic designer pieces with the trendy stuff in our closets. With a LO on the way and daycare, saving for college, etc around the corner it'll be less about us and all about him. And yes, he already has a closet that most women would give their right arm for :-)
Good luck searching for your perfect handbag, I promise there is one out there!
