mirena users

I just had mirena inserted and was wondering if your doctor said anything to you about using tampons.  Did you start using tampons the day after insertion?

Re: mirena users

  • I don't remember my doctor saying anything about tampons, but I think I used a pad for the day or so after I had mine inserted. The bleeding only lasted two or three days for me, and I don't remember it being very heavy. As far as I know, it should be okay to use tampons, but I haven't had a full period since I had it inserted, so it's been a while.
  • I did specifically ask this question to my doctor.  She said it was fine to use tampons, but suggested waiting three days.
  • I dont like to use a tampon with it in there. I am too paranoid ill snag it and rip it out or something. I have used one maybe once or twice within the past year of having the Mirena. But it was too painful for me and not worth it at all. If you just recently got it I would wait a few days before using a tampon for sure.
  • I did and had no issues.  I was very careful when I took it out (went slow).
  • I have had two Mirenas and it takes a good bit of force to have them removed, trust me when I say you don't need to delicately remove a tampon because that itself will not be enough force to pull it out.

You can use tampons right away, it just disturbed your uterine lining,  you don't have an open wound.

I was told to remove it slowly because when the strings are still new and haven't softened up yet, they are more likely to get caught on the tampon.

  • Tampons should be fine to use, I did when I had the small amount of spotting every month (compared to full-on flow, it was nothing). But the day after insertion, you should only have minimal spotting, not enough to need a tampon. If you continue bleeding for more than 5 days, I'd go back to your OB/Gyn to see if it was placed correctly and if you're doing okay with it. GL!
