Parking

So it is 99% sure we are moving to the UES! We are so excited!

The last piece to the puzzle is finding parking for me. I will be doing a reverse commute each day to Rockland County.

The apartment has a garage, but the fee is $475 a month. While we "can" afford this, it makes my stomach turn.

Do you have any tips on how to get a lower price?

Re: Parking

  • Welcome to NYC. Must you drive to Rockland county? Are there transportation alternatives? $475 a month is steep for parking a car, but probably the average in Manhattan. Best wishes...

  • I do need a car. There is a train to my town, but I am a teacher and travel between schools during the day.

  • The people I know on the UES either don't have cars or park on the street.  One of best GF's lives near your area.  She sometimes keeps her car at her parents in Westchester.

I wonder if it would be worth looking into parking at the MetroNorth station where you work. Take the train there, and then drive to work from the station.  Might be far less than $475/month. On the weekends, you could always park on the street.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions. I did look into taking public transportation to my school's town... but it is almost a 2 hour train ride. Since I have to be at work at 7:30, I would rather spend the money haha

  • I've never had to pay for parking (one of the many benefits of living in Queens!) but from what I hear, that kind of garage fee is pretty normal.

  • Not sure how far you are willing to travel, but you can usually find some garages with decent monthly rates in midtown.  The farther west the better.  Congrats on the move!
  • $475.00 sounds reasonable for the UES.  I have a friend who lives on the UWS and he pays someone $75.00 a month to move his car on alternate side days, but since you're going to need to find a spot every day, I don't really see that as an option for you.  Best of luck!

  • Look at all the garages in your neighborhood. DH found a garage by us (on 23rd and the drive) that charges only $300 a month for the top level. He could have gotten it for $250 a month but he didn't want to park outside by the river where all the seagulls fly. I'm gonna guess though that the UES will be pricier than my area no matter what.
  • We have a car  that is used daily and pay 200 a month and park it in a garage in Hoboken.
