Re: RE: Boy Scouts
My kids will not be boy scouts and will not be Catholics unless they are old enough to understand what that means.
I intend to teach my kids about all religions and eventually let them make their own decisions, but there's a damned good chance their decision will be heavily influenced by their father's opposition to bigotry.

I should add, the Boy Scouts thing would be a Hell's No. I think I was 5 or 6 when I started scouts. I was far too young to understand anything beyond being in a club with my friends with a super-fun camping trip at the end.
I expect that when my kid is old enough to want to go to church (my guess would be at least early teens?), s/he will already understand a bit about the religion s/he wants, and I'll be able to discuss the pros and cons of the choice. If that's still the choice, so be it.

Dammit, now I'm even having a problem feeling feisty. I meant everything I said, but the thought of hurting Wendy makes me want to cry. If it wasn't clear I don't think you're a bigot for drawing a different line than I would with a group that holds bigoted policies. I can sympathize wanting to influence from within.
Ugh, next I'll be writing "When you, I feel" statements.

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
Awwww, I want to give you a hug.
Husbands should be like Kleenex: Soft, strong, and disposable.
Aside from the religious and bigoted aspects, they have been involved in some major sex abuse cover ups ala the Catholic church. By "straight" scoutmasters, of course.
Mouse, I'm looking in to Camp Fire. My mom was in Camp Fire when she was a kid 50 years ago and loved it. Hopefully they're still good.
They start at age 3! We could get Dimi and Sean and Archie going early and have a good ol' time, screw you BSA.
The hair grows in thick where the horn used to be.
I would be really hurt if my kids chose any church that we saw as bigoted. Once they're old enough to get themselves there, that's their choice. But if my child asks to go to church and I don't let them, is that really different than a parent making their child go to church when they don't want to?
I do find (not with you Wendy, or anyone here, I'm thinking of a real life friend) that sometimes people just don't consider the perspective of how differently an "outsider" can view the church. We were watching a news story about a teacher/coach that took his class to church without notifying any parents or getting their permission. She didn't understand why it would bother anyone, and kept saying, "it's church!"

Church and religion completely aside, a coach/teacher had better not be taking my child anywhere without notifying me.
Exactly! She thought just because he was taking them to church that Jesus would make it all okay.
I don't think churches or religion is some big awful thing. I think it can be a hugely positive influence in a lot of people's lives. I just choose not to hang out in one every week, because that has not been the case for me.
