Because I'm bored: If you had to make lifestyle changes

Re: Because I'm bored: If you had to make lifestyle changes

  • Sell my car. Cut back on eating out. Cut back on book, music and comic purchases.

And the cleaning lady, tho that makes me feel bad because that means she may fall on hard times now that me (and likely others') aren't using her services anymore.

  • Probably start with the bigger things like travel since we love doing that. We are already having to cut back a little since DH has lost his overtime temporarily as his building undergoes major repairs.

I could teach extra classes beyond my required load or even summer school to make extra money. And raise my rates during tax season since I do undercharge.

What will be hard for us is that DS starts college next fall. Right now he is at a public high school but we are looking at major bucks for college right now. Yea I could force him to a much cheaper instituion but I just cannot penalize him for something out of his control when he has worked his butt off to get top grades to go where he wants to go.

Kristin, is there any way you can look into refinancing your house, or try to get a lower interest rate?  And, I don't know if you have credit card debt, but a friend of mine recently wrote a letter to all of her credit card companies asking for a lower interest rate, and they all obliged.  I'm soryr you're having a rough time, honestly.

I'm sorry for being an AW.  I just reread this thread and noticed my response got a few comments towards it.  I am in a mood today and it is really coming across online, huh?

I don't have credit cards at all.  Sometimes I think that's good because we don't charge things we can't afford, but we also have no emergency fall back.  My debts can't go away.  Mikayla had no health insurance, which I know was a bad idea, but we simply couldn't afford it at the time.  The state offered us catastrophic mgt. insurance for her only at $225/month and we just couldn't do it.  I was crossing my fingers and paying doctors appointments out of pocket.  It backfired.  She got very ill, was hospitalized, and had to have surgery.  I have to pay those bills back and they are high.  My student loans are in forebearance but I can't defer those any longer beyond DEcember.  That is about to be another $415 per month and I am a college drop out!!!  Nine classes to go and I can't afford to take them. I am still going to civil court over that stupid Sears bill I had posted about a few months ago.  My bills are those debts, mortgage, and basic living expenses.

We can't refinance because H has no job, if I am being honest.  We got this mortgage on a no documentation loan in the first place, and I won't go through that again.  I don't even think it would be offered again.  My credit isn't good enough to finance the house on my own, and I don't want to do that anyway.  I would rather ride out this ARM.  The rates are not adjusting like crazy, but the payments are still really high and getting higher.

I could really go on about this forever.  I am a MM nightmare and this is EXACTLY why I do not post over there.  I feel like I should be the example of what NOT to do.  Despite my best intentions, all of my plans backfire on me.  Anyway, sorry to turn a harmless thread into my vent.  I had a little breakdown this morning and it is still getting to me eight hours later!

  • Kristin-

I know this is generally bad advice for a lot of people, but have you considered bankruptcy?

  • If we stop having fun -- the terrorists win! Oh wait, wrong issue....

I wouldn't cut cable or Internet. We would probably eat out less and rethink how much we drove (or tried to carpool more).I wouldn't cut manicures or Starbucks (both are medical necessities). More coupon usage -- and probably go to Costco with my MIL and share items.

  • I'm fairly certain both my H and I could not live without high speed internet.

    LOL

We'd be online eating Spam!  hahaha

If anything, we'd get rid of our personal cell phones (we both have phones through work..I know, this is ridiculous) eiminate HBO, cut coupons, NEVER hire sitters (we rarely do this anyway) and poissibly cut back on some of the activites for the girls.

  • Awww Kristin,

I'm so sorry about your situation.  I feel like I remember you from another board but I'm not sure.  The catastrophic insurance thing sounds familiar.  Anyway, I hope things get better for you very soon.
