So our dishwasher hasn't been working very well lately.  Half the dishes are still dirty when I open it or covered in a weird white film (all dishes go in well rinsed).  It's not that old either (about 5 years old). I got sick of having to run it twice, so I've been hand washing dishes.  It's really not that bad.  Dishes seem to get done, and out of the sink twice as fast now.  And I know they're clean when I'm done.

Does anyone know how to clean a dishwasher?  I didn't have one growing up, so I'm a little dishwasher stupid.  Should I try a different type of detergent?  Right now we use Cascade powder and Jetdry.  Is there a cleaning pack I can throw in there?

I only use liquid soap in the dishwasher.  The powder stuff doesn't compare, at least in my opinion.

We desperately need a new dishwasher.  Ours must be original to the house (13 years old) and it's rusting and coming apart.  I swear everytime we open the dishwasher a new part that has fallen off is waiting for us.  It's actually getting comical.  Except that we've had 2 casualties in the past week.  RIP champagne glass and regular drinking glass.

I'll try the liquid.  It might help with the white film.  I also read that you can run vinegar through an empty dishwasher.  Maybe I'll try that tonight, too.

I have run vinegar through the dishwasher on a couple of occasions.  I can't say as it helped a whole lot.

The dishwasher detergents are all changing right now to become more environmentally friendly (article).  While it's obviously a good thing to not pollute the environment, I do think that they're not quite as affective.  DH and I have noticed a difference.  We have used Cascade Complete (liquid) for awhile now, and now that it's phosphate-free, it doesn't do quite as good of a job.

I hate to be the one to break the bad news to you, but ours did that and no amount of vinegar or soap switching helped (believe me, I tried everything). We had to get a new dishwasher. We found one for fairly cheap ($300ish) from Lowes. I will say it was a great purchase. I love the layout of the new ones A LOT better.

I really don't want to get a new one if I dont have to.  Is 5 years old for a dishwasher?

I bought some dishwasher cleaner at Meijer on my lunch.  I'll run that and see if it makes a difference.  I also bought some liquid detergent, mostly because it was only $4 for the big bottle.  I have to admit, I was never a fan of the powder.

  • We had a fluke with our dishwasher. For some reason it leaked once last week. But then the repair guy came and ran it through all the cycles and it has been fine.

5 years is not old.  I would be pretty upset if I had to replace my dishwasher after 5 years.

  • I think I've been very productive so far today. TV repaired. Grocery Shopped, Food Prepped, Dinner in the Crock Pot. Potatoes cut and waiting. Coffee intake, tea intake, SS meeds reordered. Now trying to figure out if I should go ahead and make a few soups and free them. Kinda want to watch TV though to make sure it is really fixed. hhmmmm, the DH just said something about making lunch. hhmmm

    Wow, you have been productive!

  • Remember how I said I'm going to be in a chili cook-off on Friday?  It just got canceled due to lack of interest.  I'm bummed.  Sad

They run some dishwasher cleaner through the one at the office every now and again.

My dishwasher never worked - it smelled burned and water pooled at the bottom so i cleaned it out, and never used it. I just wash by hand.

My boss's son was house-sitting, used the dishwasher, and thought he broke it.  He had his dad come over to see if he could fix it.  He was rummaging around looking for a tool, or dishtowels, or something, and found my stash 'herbs' and pipe.

I guess with the awkwardness of that - he didn't tell me about the dishwasher for about 3 months.  The water had been sitting at the bottom for that long, and was the nastiest thing I saw when I opened it.

Aw man, really?  I would be bummed too.  I don't get why people never want to participate in work festivities.

    That sucks.

My office is too small for stuff like that.  I loved working for a bigger company, and being able to participate in those activiities.

My work is notorious for that sort of thing.  We had a bake sale (for charity) last year at Christmastime.  Only a few people (including me) baked anything for it, and almost no one purchased anything.  There are 100 people in my office, so you'd think there'd be more participation!

I work with a bunch of year-round scrooges.  Not the best work culture, IMO.

I want to work with you where you have chili cook-offs, horse shoe leagues, and human fooseball!  It sounds like you work with fun people.

  • We are buying a new dishwasher this week (or when we have time).

     Just had to share that.

I think thing number 1 is up from her nap,so I'm off.

They've taken a lot of monetary things away from over the last few years, and so they are trying to keep morale up by doing lots of fun things with us.

We had 5 (one a month from May to Sept) company cookouts over the summer (me and a partner won the egg toss competition in Sept, holla).  They provide the food and drinks and we play random games.

Every Halloween we have a company wide decorating/costume competition.

They just do a bunch of random, fun things.  I think it really helps morale.  And it's nice that so many people participate.

    Your co-workers sounds liker boogers.

  • Um, being in my house right now is driving my a little coo cue for coco puffs. I'm making a chicken fryer in the crock pot and it is smelling so good right now. It just makes me want to make more food which would mean going back to the store and picking up a few more things. I hate it when I gather a bunch of recipes and think I have everything only to discover when I'm actually pulling everything to make the recipe I'm missing 1 ingredient.

  • Does anyone think that someone will actually get married on 10/10/10?
    image
  • I would have. The original date I wanted to get married was Oct 1st 2010 so when it is abbreviated it would look like 10/01/10. I thought it would be fun because it would be binary code which is the base language for computers and DH is a Computer tech. I'm a dork.

We don't do fun stuff like that at my work, but we drink a lot.

There's always a bottle of wine in the fridge - there's some rum in the cupboard - I have 2 bottles in my office.

Anytime we get together there's TONS of empty wine bottles on the table.

I forgot to mention this part, but the kicker is that the chili cook-off was intended to be a part of a larger potluck to raise money to help cover health care expenses for a coworker of ours who is going through cancer treatment.  So, it's for a good cause, but still the whole thing is cancelled because so few people signed up for both the cook-off and the potluck.

Thanks Kasa, I thought so too, but at the time DH looked at me like I was having some sort of stroke or something. I mean it only took him 9 years and 46 weeks to ask me, plus the 15 minutes he spent convincing me he really was asking. I think he expect that I would want to do it the next day. Silly Boy!

Haha.  T's due date was 01/10/10.  I thought that would be a cool birthday to have...just because it's a bunch of 0's and 1's.  :)
