Dog vs. Toddler - Advice please...
Re: Dog vs. Toddler - Advice please...
I know the rescue I got Monty from did
I hope you find something that works for your dog, but I promise you there are people out there who would take her and care for her. Its not hopeless. There are plenty of non-kid having people out who like dogs that she'd probably be happy and safe with.
Also, its doubtful the vet would put the dog to sleep anyway. Most vets won't do convenience euthanasia, even for a biter.
I've got emails out to a couple different people for recommendations so hopefully I will hear something soon.
But Fitty is right. You signed a contract with the rescue when you adopted him and in that contract it more than likely said that you need to return the dog to them. So if I were you I would find out who that rescue was and contact them, that's really going to be your best bet.
Darn. This sucks. I had a very similar thing happen when my daughter was about 18 months old. The difference was that the dog was very much not provoked rectally. She was just cruising by and he lept off of the couch and bit her face. It was a smaller dog (a llhasa apso) and a small nip, but I could not take the risk of something worse happening. The dog was our first baby, but was getting old. He had allergies, epilepsy, and had been through several knee surgeries, and he wasn't a particularly "happy" fellow. I had him taken out of the house that day and put to sleep. My brother was bit in the face when he was little by our family dog (also a llhasa), and my parents did the same thing. It's among the worst decisions that I ever had to make, but I never really doubted that I did the right thing.
I called the vet right away for ideas or suggestions on rescues or training programs. We spoke for awhile and ultimately she said that she advised against re-homing and reccomended that I bring the dog in to be put to sleep. She also offered to kennel the dog for a few days while we made up her mind.
Chatter - thanks for the help - seriously. Any tips / leads are sooo appreciated.
So I spoke with our local director. She said she would go at it as placing a senior dog, not a lab specific rescue. Her first choice would be Jethros Place. I'm not sure how close you are to them, but she thinks that would be your best bet. When explaining the biting I would be first off to say that your dog was provoked and doesn't have a previous bite history.
If Jethros doesn't work out I would try the other two.
